Stephen Gruppetta Harpenden, United Kingdom-https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephengruppetta www.stephengruppetta.com Summary My formal education and first career were in science, and I worked as an academic researcher and lecturer at London universities, mostly focusing on developing novel ophthalmic instrumentation. Later, I left academia and set up Codetoday, a company to teach Python coding to children and adults. I taught and ran the company for eight years, recruiting and managing a team of instructors and developing the curriculum and lesson plans. During this period, I also became an international Python educator, writing articles and communicating about Python on several platforms. My Python textbook for beginners and my regular articles have a large and growing following, mostly due to the focus on clarity and innovative technical writing style. In the past year, I shifted my teaching efforts away from running a team of instructors to teach live courses. I set up on-demand platforms for both adults and children who want to learn Python coding. I now want to focus on what I really enjoy doing: technical writing and Python teaching and communication. Experience Author The Python Coding Book: I published the first paperback edition earlier this year. However, the "zeroth edition" has been available online for a few years and has a significant reach. It typically shows up as one of the first organic entries for the search term "python book" on Google and other search engines. https://thepythoncodingplace.com/the-python-coding-book/ https://thepythoncodingbook.com The Python Coding Stack: This is my substack with regular articles and tutorials about Python, where I often write using narrative writing techniques, using storytelling methods to engage readers, help them understand the abstract concepts and retain the knowledge. I launched the publication in April 2023 from scratch, and to date, there are 2,300 subscribers. https://www.thepythoncodingstack.com Real Python (2020-present): I write regular guest articles for Real Python, one of the world's leading Python education sites. These articles are classic-style tutorials following the Real Python style guide and publication workflow. https://realpython.com/team/sgruppetta/ DataCamp (Apr 2024 - present): I'm a regular guest author for DataCamp, focusing on their Python content for data science. The DataCamp articles are short to medium length tutorials covering core Python topics. Python Educator / Director Codetoday and The Python Coding Place September 2015 - Present I set up Codetoday in 2015 and taught Python to children and adults. Initially, I taught all the students personally. Later, I grew a team of instructors. We taught thousands of children in live courses over the years. In recent years, most of my time was dedicated to running the business. I decided I wanted to spend my time on those areas that I excel at. Therefore, I wound down all the live elements of the children's coding programme to free up my time to focus on technical writing and communication. My main teaching now is through on-demand platforms. The Python Coding Place is a platform for adult learners and Codetoday Unlimited is designed for teenagers and preteens. Lecturer / Academic Fellow City University London September 2005 - August 2015 I held academic positions of Lecturer -) and RCUK Academic Fellow -). My research focused on developing novel retinal imaging technology, and I have secured grants from funding bodies including EPSRC, Royal Society, and RCUK. I taught in the undergraduate programme and have received multiple teaching awards and nominations. Research Fellow Observatoire de Paris / Paris Observatory May 2004 - August 2005 I ran a research project studying the dynamic aberrations introduced by the human tear film. PhD Student Imperial College London September 2000 - April 2004 Doctoral research project: developing an adaptive-optics confocal laser scanning ophthalmoscope for high-resolution retinal imaging. Other degrees University of Malta September 1996 - August 2000 BSc (Hons) First class in Physics and Mathematics.
