Flying with Pets
If you’re thinking of flying with your beloved pet, there are a few things that you’ll need to check out and understand before making your booking.
Firstly, pets that travel on planes fall into pretty much just two categories: in-cabin and cargo. So, let’s take a look at you travelling alongside your pet on the plane, an in-cabin trip that will keep both of you calm and at ease.
TIP: don’t assume that internal or domestic flights and international flights have the same rules and regulations. They don’t, so check them out well beforehand.
Animals that are permitted as in-cabin pets are typically are domesticated cats, dogs, and rabbits. Caged birds are also on this list for most airlines, but be aware that birds that are noisy, e.g. cockatoos, may not be permitted to fly.
And there are restrictions and requirements on in-cabin pets that must be met and, if necessary, documented. For instance, very young puppies will not be allowed, the airline may insist that they are at least four months old. And proof of the health of your pet (up to date vaccinations, rabies free status docuemtented by a vet etc.), will be necessary. Always, always, have the correct paperwork with you. There is no such thing as too much documentation when it comes to this sort of airline travel.
As much as you love your puppy or cat and want to have it feeling free and cheerful, in-cabin pets will need to be caged or at least in some sort of container like a soft shell bag that’s the right size for them. They can then be placed at your feet or just under the seat in front of you. Remember that the airline’s focus is on the comfort and safety of all its passengers, so if it’s a choice between them and your pet, I’m afraid that they have little choice but to put your much loved animal companion second.
