Marco Zoncu

I’m a seasoned technology leader with over 20 years of experience in software engineering, research & development, and technical leadership. My work focuses on AI-driven systems, scalable architectures, and delivering impactful, production-ready solutions. I combine strategic thinking with hands-on technical depth to lead teams, drive innovation, and align engineering with product vision.

Currently, I serve as Head of Engineering at SonicJobs Ltd, where I lead the adoption of AI agents to automate job application workflows. I’ve driven our transition to a microservices architecture on AWS and integrated large language models (LLMs) into our core systems.

Before that, I was Technical Director at Istella S.p.A., where I led AI product development in conversational interfaces, NLP, and knowledge-based systems. I worked closely with enterprise clients—including a major European fintech—to implement virtual agent solutions. Earlier in my career at Tiscali Italia S.p.A., I held several leadership roles, including Director of R&D, Software Team Manager, and Technical Project Manager. Over the years, I oversaw the development of AI-powered chatbots, mobile platforms, and SIM-based services, contributing to both technical innovation and operational efficiency.

My academic background includes a Master’s-equivalent degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Pisa, where I graduated with honors (110/110 cum laude). I’ve continued to deepen my knowledge through courses on blockchain, robotics, and advanced AI systems. I also have research experience in automata theory and early-career contributions in mobile application development.

Technically, I’m proficient in Python, JavaScript (Node.js), Java, and C/C++, and I’ve led deployments on AWS, GCP, and Azure. I have extensive experience with containerization using Docker and Kubernetes, and I’m skilled in working with both SQL and NoSQL databases. I follow Agile practices and embrace DevOps tools and workflows to ensure high-quality delivery.

I speak fluent English and Italian, and I have working knowledge of French, Portuguese, and Polish. Outside of work, I enjoy music (jazz, classical, and rock), reading, running, swimming, and windsurfing.

I live with my family in Lucca, a beautiful ancient city in Tuscany not far from Pisa and Florence, which is for me an inspiring place to live and work.
