My role at Ampath was amazing as I learned so about clinical
pathology. I worked both as a frontline and specimen recep on.
As frontline I used to receive pa ents in the lab, I would capture
their request forms,accurately paying a en on to the reffering
Dr, copy Dr if there is any, ward if the pa ent is in-hospital
pa ent and then , the pa ent demographics, guarantor details for
medical aid or account purposes and lastly the correct tests
requested. I handled telephone queries, a ended to supporter's
needs etc. I also did checklogs as this is vital in my work as we
are working with people's lives. I needed to check that all forms
capatured on the day are correctly logged, no missed tests,
incorrect tests, incorrect Dr's mnemonics, pa ent demographics
and account billing. This is done to give the best possible service
to our supporters and not cos ng our pa ents money or the
company by making sure the correct tests are logged. My second
role as lab assistant was to receive specimens from the hospital
and our walk in and outside pa ent. I would label the specimens
as per their respec ve discipline, eg: Full blood count is
heamatology and therefore I handle it by checking for clots if
none I place it in the instrument for the lab tech to run. If I
receive LH,FSH,E2 I know to centrifuge them as they have to be
spun down. and then the tests not done on site I would batch
and sendaway to the necessary performing sites.
