CLOUD OPTIMIZATION CHECKLIST
Are your Microsoft Azure deployments truly cost optimized? Use the checklist below to determine
if there are additional opportunities for cost savings. You may be surprised at how much waste or
programmatic cost savings are still left on the table.
Right-Size Virtual Machines
Pay for what you actually use by right-sizing your Virtual Machines. Optimizing your cost starts with finding the optimal
cloud configuration to maximize your performance at the lowest cost.
Configure Auto-Scaling
Auto-Scaling allows for dynamically matching resources to match performance. If demand grows, additional resources
will be used in order to properly handle the workload. As demand falls, resources can be de-allocated to reduce costs.
Buy Virtual Machines reserved instances to save money overpay as you go costs
Review your virtual machine usage over 30 days to see if you could save money by purchasing an Azure reservation. You
can pre-purchase the base costs for your virtual machines. Discounts automatically apply to new or existing VMs that
have the same size and region as your reservations.
Configure Hybrid Benefits
The long-term cost savings is significant in most cases. But, just like Reserved VM Instances, various factors determine
the actual savings. Make sure to understand the current inventory of VM’s and licenses if you are looking to take advantage of Reserved VM instances and/or Hybrid Benefits.
Configure Automatic Renewal for your Expiring Reservations
Enabling Automatic Renewal saves you from not having to closely monitor expiring reservations and provides an easy way
to continue to get renewal discounts.
Use Standard Storage to store Managed Disk Snapshots
Save up to 60% by saving your snapshots in standard storage, regardless of the storage type of the parent disk.
Delete Public IP Addresses not associated to a running Azure Resource
If you don’t plan to use the public IP addresses, it is recommended that you delete them and save money, as there
is a nominal charge associated with it.
Use Lifecycle Management to transition older block blobs to a cooler tier
Automatically tier your data to cool or archive storage to optimize your storage costs while retaining your data by creating
Lifecycle Management.
