It's that time of year again, when spring is in the air. While sweet-smelling flowers begin to bloom outside, your home carpet continues to collect dust, dirt, and foul odors inside. Keeping a clean carpet should be on every spring cleaner's agenda. It may be tempting to whip out an arsenal of supermarket carpet-cleaning products, but what if there are small children in the house with allergies? How about a partner with a skin condition? What about pets? If so, consider an alternative to traditional carpet cleaners.
Don't be fooled by the bright packaging and fruity fragrances—many common household cleaners contain known irritants, allergens, and harsh chemicals such as sodium hydroxide, chlorine, triclosan, and even ammonia. No need to worry, though. Effective, inexpensive DIY solutions exist, and you make them with ingredients that are probably already sitting around your home. Here's how you can make your own non-toxic, family-friendly carpet cleaner.
Ingredients:
Baking soda
White vinegar
Lemon essential oil (optional, and other oils are fine)
Instructions:
First, combine the baking soda and lemon essential oil. (Only do this if you've decided to use an essential oil; plain baking soda is just fine, too.) Next, sprinkle the baking soda mixture (or plain baking soda) on the parts of the carpet you want to clean and let it sit for an hour or more. Once it has settled, combine equal parts of water and white vinegar in a spray bottle and spray the previously sprinkled areas. The mixture will fizzle, and then you may put a towel over any wet spots. If there's a stubborn stain, try applying this solution multiple times or vacuuming the treated spots.
