Geologic Time Period: Jurassic period to Cretaceous
period. Started ~201 Ma and ended 145 Ma.
Figure 1A (above): Yangchuanosaurus reconstructed body shape & size (from
https://dinosaurpictures.org/Yangchuanosaurus-pictures
Taxonomy: Yangchuanosaurus belongs to the Saurischia clade. suborder Theropoda
Size: Length 9 m (29.5 ft), Height 2 m (6.5 ft)
Weight: 900-1,100 kg (2,000-2,600 lbs)
Life span: Approximately 20 years
Diet: Carnivores who consumed medium-sized plate-backed stegosaurs and the long-necked sauropods.
Habitat: Yangchuanosaurus was a terrestrial dinosaur, living primarily on land.
Diagnostic characteristics
❖
Their hips had a pubis bone pointing forward relative to ischium bone (=not parallel to ischium), it helped them move faster/more
efficiently
❖
Most Saurischia had forelimbs that had a 1st digit (thumb) that was extra flexible or semi-opposable= it could move part way across the
palm. this arrangement helped therapods hold food and/or grab prey.
❖
Saurischian teeth sit at the outer edge of their mouths

Yangchuanosaurus was alive. Shows the dinosaur could have migrated across

connections during the Jurassic period. (from

Co-Starring Animal: Genus Rhamphorhynchus:
first described by: Georg zu Münster in 1831
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhamphorhynchus
Taxonomy: Rhamphorhynchus belongs to the old-style classic taxonomic class of
Pterosaurs.
Size: The overall body length, including the tail, ranges from 50 to 75 centimeters.
Weight: 2 to 10 kilograms, depending on the individual specimen
Diet: Rhamphorhynchus have been discovered with preserved stomach contents,
which include fish remains
Habitat: Rhamphorhynchus inhabited an aerial environment. It spent most of its life
flying over ancient seas, lakes, and rivers.

Rhamphorhynchus from

characteristics Aerial Adaptation: Pterosaurs are characterized for having an ability
to fly. They had relatively thin bones, large extended wings made of skin and a
special wing design that enabled them to move and fly.
Heterodont Teeth: Pterosaurs had various kind of teeth; short and sharp for gripping
Fish and other prey species. They had teeth adapted to the type of diet they
consumed.

solnhofen Limestone, Bavaria, Germany and Switzerland.

Geologic Time Period of
Rhamphorhynchus: Rhamphorhynchus
existed during the Late Jurassic period.
Specifically, it lived during the Tithonian
stage, which occurred approximately 152 to
145 million years ago. This pterosaur genus
thrived in the Late Jurassic landscapes,
soaring the skies over ancient seas and
landscapes, alongside other iconic dinosaurs
and prehistoric creatures of that time.

Supporting Animal: Genus Dorsetensia
(first described by the English paleontologist M.A. McGowan in 1974)
Taxonomy: Dorsetensia belongs to the class Reptilia, which includes all reptiles. More
specifically, it falls within the order Ichthyosauria,
Taxonomic phylum: Mollusca, Modern animal belonging to the same phylum is the garden
snail
Size: Dorsetensia typically reached lengths of about 2 to 3 meters (6.6 to 9.8 feet).
Weight: 200 to 400 kilograms
Diet: Fish, Cephalopods, Small Marine Reptiles
Habitat: Aquatic habitat
Figure 3A(above): shape & size of Dorsetensia romani
(from
http://www.bajocien14.com/article-dorsetensia-romani-.html)
Characteristics: streamlined, dolphin-like body shape: This streamlined body design was
highly adapted for efficient swimming in marine environments, allowing Dorsetensia to be a
fast and agile predator. The streamlined body would have reduced water resistance,
facilitating swift movement through the water while hunting for prey such as fish and
cephalopods.
Geologic Time Period : Dorsetensia is a
narrowly coiled discoidal ammonite from the
early Middle Jurassic, lower Bajocian,
belonging to the family Sonniniidae of the
superfamily Hildoceratoidea.
Figure 3C(above): Dorsetensia fossils have primarily been discovered in the United Kingdom, particularly in the coastal
regions of southern England.(From https://paleobiodb.org/navigator/
