Jack & The Hill

Jack was a skinny eleven year old with mousy brown
hair. He loved to spend time dreaming on the hilltop beside
the rundown farm cottage where he lived. Not that he had
much time for day-dreaming, as he had to help around the
farm every day after school.
Besides cleaning the cow shed and feeding the hens,
Jack ended his day with a march up the hill to fetch water
from a small pond near the top. Not only was there no
running water, but the cottage also had no electricity or
heating.
Jack’s father, Bert, worked as a farm labourer. His wife
had died from a sudden illness soon after, Bella, his young
daughter’s third birthday. Bella, who was now seven, also
helped with simple chores around the house.
Despite all the hardship, Jack loved to whistle and
hum his favourite tunes as he went about his chores. “Stop
whistling!” shouted Bella. “Can’t you see that you’ll get us
all into trouble?” she added. “Just relax,” Jack said. “We’re at
the edge of the town. Nobody can hear us!”

Life was not the same since the mayor had called
a meeting of all the townsfolk. Bella was the most badly
affected. Before then, she was a bubbly girl who loved to
play tricks on her brother. Now, she got upset easily and
was quick to hide whenever a visitor came round. Since
that town meeting, Bella seemed to go into a shell and this
dragged down her grades at school. Jack felt it was also
the school’s fault. Mrs Clark, Bella’s teacher, used to be
so cheerful. She encouraged all her pupils with her broad
smile. These days, though, she appeared sullen and reserved.

When Jack Meets Jill
Jack stopped whistling when Bert returned from the
fields. “Evening children,” Bert muttered in a solemn tone.
Before that meeting of the whole town, Bert would have
greeted his children with a huge hug and smile even if he
was tired.
Now everything seemed to have changed. “Jack, farmer
Dale next door said he saw you smiling as you walked up
the hill!” said Bert in a low tone. “You should know the
rules,” he reminded his son. Bella started to worry again.

“Are we going to get into trouble again Daddy? I’m so
scared,” said Bella as she sobbed. “That’s enough crying for
now!” ordered her Dad. “There are more important things
to worry about.”
“Jack, you need to help me in the stables after dinner.”
Jack nodded reluctantly. He would much rather end his
evening’s chores by the pond on the hill. It was so peaceful
there; with the reflection of the stars on the pond. Jack
would enter his own imaginary world by simply gazing at
the stars and the shimmering water.

Back in the real world, times were hard for Bert and his
children. Ever since his wife passed away, there was one less
pair of hands to help around the farm. And to make matters
worse, Bert was made to work even harder after the last
town gathering.
Dinner was a very simple meal of potato and carrot
soup with a loaf of stale bread. That’s about all Bert could
manage with his income. There was a time when Bella
would return from school with some delicious surprises.
Passing through the town, Bella would stop by Baker Bob’s
shop and he would treat her to freshly baked buns and
donuts to take home.
Baker Bob was very fond of Bella and he felt sad that
her Dad had such a hard life. Well, all this also changed
after the mayor called that fateful meeting. The baker’s
Santa-like greetings became a rather stern “What do you
want? Just hurry along now!”

Welcome To Happyville

Happyville used to be the happiest place on earth. This
scenic little town was surrounded by green countryside and
yet it was only an hour’s drive from the nearest city. The
town was built by the banks of a wide river that flowed
along its eastern side. Happyville’s main street ran parallel to
the riverbank. Both ends of the street led to two small hills
on the edge of the town.

Jack’s house was next to one of these hills. On the top
of the other hill was a huge mansion with twenty rooms.
This was the magnificent residence of Mayor Richard. He
owned most of the land in Happyville and many of the
farms surrounding the town. He was so rich that everyone
called him ‘Mayor Rich’. Having so much money also made
him very powerful.
The townsfolk had no choice but to choose him as their
mayor. And life got worse after this. “From tomorrow, you
shall all show your respect to me with offerings from your
farm, shop or family treasures!” This was the first thing
Richard said to the townsfolk after becoming their mayor.
With every passing year he became richer and his body
rounder.
Mayor Rich had only one child, a ten year old girl called
Jill. Richard spoilt his daughter from head to toe, thinking
that this was how fathers should show their love. Every year,
he would greet his daughter with “Happy Birthday Angel!
I hope you like these presents?” “Dad, my birthday was last
week and I told you not to buy me these girly dresses,” she
would reply.
Jill was now thoroughly bored with dressing up at
home like a princess. She was more into Xtreme sports
like skateboarding. “And Dad, I don’t play with dollhouses
anymore!!!” she would remind him. Although he loved to
shower his daughter with expensive surprises, Mayor Rich
actually spent very little time with Jill. He was too busy
finding ways to get even richer.
Jill’s mother left home three years earlier and was
never seen again. To this day, her mother’s disappearance
remained a mystery.

When Jack Meets Jill
Back to the ordinary townsfolk, every year they held a
contest to see who would be the most jovial person. Baker
Bob won the top prize three years in a row. He was not only
the happiest in Happyville, but all the children loved him
11

for he was also very kind. Every day after school, Bob would
look out for the children. “Come on in my little ones,” he
would beckon. “Try my freshly baked ginger bread man!”
Bella would always leave the bakery with the most delights.
Jill never set foot inside Baker Bob’s shop. The baker
had no time for spoilt brats; at least this is what he thought
the mayor’s daughter was. Unlike the other children who
walked or cycled to the free school in the town centre,
Mayor Rich’s chauffeur drove Jill to her private school in a
neighbouring town.
One day, Mayor Rich called a meeting of the whole
town. Every single person in Happyville, old and young,
large and small, had to attend. “Fellow residents . . . .”
Mayor Rich started his speech politely but in a firm voice.
“When I call a meeting, I expect you all to be on time,”
he reminded them as he pointed to the town clock which
began to chime.
In the distance, there were one or two stragglers running
towards the meeting place. Farmer Bert panted as he was
the last one to arrive. Bert was in the middle of milking the
cows when he found out about the meeting. “I shall deal
with you lazy bones later!” Mayor Rich pointed to Bert
and the other latecomer. “But first, everyone listen to my
announcement!”
Mayor Rich called the meeting to order everyone to
stop being happy. From this day on, the greedy mayor
wanted the townsfolk to work extra hard and in as solemn
a manner as possible. They were to be no smiles or jokes
or friendly chit-chats, and there was to be no time for kind
deeds. Baker Bob was forbidden to offer his delicious snacks
to the children. He had to spend half of his time baking
cakes and buns for the Mayor’s mansion.

When Jack Meets Jill
The speech came as a shock to everyone. Some of the
townsfolk opened their mouth to protest but they were
quickly silenced. “Anyone who dares to challenge me will be
severely punished,” said the mayor.
“Now, as for you Bert . . . . ,” but just as Mayor Rich
was about to continue, he was interrupted by a child’s
voice. “How dare you talk to my Dad like this!” It was
Bella. Before this incident, she had been a fearless girl who
always spoke her mind. Jack, who was in the crowd with
his classmates, tried to rush over to calm his sister down.
But it was too late. “Bert, you obviously have no idea how
to bring up your daughter. From today, you will have to
give me eight-tenths of the milk, eggs and cheese from the
farm.”

There was a huge gasp of disbelief at this severe
punishment, but there was more to come from the cruel
mayor. “If I hear one squeak of laughter from your daughter
or if I catch any of you with just a grin on your face, then
I shall take away your farm altogether.” The farm that Bert
worked on was, in fact, owned by the greedy mayor. The
mayor rented it to Bert but expected more and more of the
farm produce in return.
The townsfolk left the meeting almost speechless and
with solemn faces. There was fear in their hearts including
Bella’s. She became withdrawn and guilty that she caused
so much misery for her father. Life in Happyville was never
the same after this gathering.

Jill longed to see her mother, Debbie, again. She missed
her terribly and, to this day, she couldn’t understand why
her mom just suddenly left home.
The sadder Jill looked, the more her father, Mayor
Rich, would shower her with toys and the coolest hi-tech
gizmos. She already had the latest models of smartphones
and tablets.
It was through her iPad that Jill discovered the ‘real’
world of ordinary kids. She just wanted to be like them. She
didn’t want to live like a little princess in a palace.
Jill felt lonely and increasingly bored. No-one in
Happyville would talk to her. After all, she was meant to
be the spoilt daughter of the cruel mayor. Even the snooty
classmates at her private school avoided her since she didn’t
live in the same town as them.

One Sunday, a visitor rang the doorbell. Jill ignored
it thinking it must be one of the townsfolk delivering the
usual offerings to her father. Soon after, her father shouted
“Come downstairs my little treasure! I want you to meet
someone.” Excited for once, Jill slid down the banister of
the staircase at breakneck speed. “This is not the way young
princesses behave!” chided her father who then went on to
introduce the stranger. “Jill, this is Miss Dob. I have asked
her to be your nanny.” Jill shook hands limply and avoided
looking at the visitor. “Hello young lady! Well, what a
pretty girl you are,” greeted Nanny Dob. Jill glanced back
at the nanny and murmured back, “Nice to meet you . . . .
I suppose.”

When Jack Meets Jill
Jill’s new nanny could not be more different than her
mother. Debbie had smooth soft skin and bright blue eyes.
Jill’s eyes would swell up in tears when she remembered
how she used to play with her mom’s silky brown hair. Her
mom would sit by her bedside every night to read her a
short story.
Nanny Dob was older than her mother. She had a
crooked nose with a wart on it. In some ways, the nanny
did look a little like a witch, but Jill didn’t find her scary. In
fact, she had a kind voice, even though the pitch was lower
than her mom’s. Surprisingly, she had blue eyes as well.
The days passed more quickly now that Jill had a
companion; even though she did resemble a witch. Jill
had feared that Nanny Dob would be very strict towards
her and nag her non-stop to do her homework. To her
surprise, the nanny turned out to be kind, understanding
and extremely funny. Nanny Dob would often have a good

laugh with Jill. They frequently watched YouTube videos
together on the iPad. Nanny Dob was keen for Jill to
discover what hobbies and experiences other tweens had.
It was on YouTube that Jill discovered the joys of
skateboarding. Mayor Rich would never have bought Jill
such an outdoor toy. “No, my precious! Skateboards are
for badly behaved boys,” he would have said. But Nanny
Dob thought otherwise. She quietly stuffed into the
cupboards all the gifts that the mayor had bought for his
daughter. Instead, it was she who went to town to buy Jill’s
first skateboard. Every so often after school, and before her
father got home, Jill would practice skateboarding down the
hill outside her house.

Gradually, Jill began to find life less boring. Spending
time with her nanny made her happy. In fact, the mayor’s
strict rule about being solemn did not apply to his daughter.
Jill no longer moped about the huge mansion in a sulk.
As for Nanny Dob, she seemed to know all along that
Jill was not a spoilt girl. Jill yearned for the love of her
father, especially now that her mom had gone. But rather
than giving Jill the warmth of a loving parent, Mayor Rich
chose to show his affection by buying things non-stop for
her.

Jill woke up one Saturday to be told by her nanny
that her father would be out of town for the whole day.
Finishing her breakfast at lightning speed, she dashed up
to her room. She re-appeared wearing a crash helmet and
protectors for her elbows and knee. “Where do you suppose
you’re going to?” asked Nanny Dob in a half-serious tone.
“Come on, Nan. You know now’s my chance, right?” Jill
replied. Nanny Dob felt a little torn. She knew she had a
duty to look after Jill. Yet she also wished Jill could break
out of the ‘princess-like tower’ that she was trapped in.
“Off you go then! Take your phone and call me if you
need anything!” said the nanny with a smile on her face.
“Oh Nan, thank you, thank you,” Jill answered in a rush,
blowing her a kiss on her way out.
Skating downhill from her mansion and along
Happyville’s main street, Jill felt as if she was gliding
through another world. It was totally different seeing the
town go by this way than sitting in her father’s chauffeur
driven limousine. She felt free.
Jill whistled in a carefree manner and even managed a
wave or two to the townsfolk who were going about their
business. Some were quite surprised to see the mayor’s
daughter on skateboards. Others remained sullen and
quickly entered their shops and homes when they saw her.

After all, she could report them to her father for attempting
to smile or not seeming to work hard enough.
Finally, Jill arrived at the other side of the town which
was lined by another hill. It was a beautiful sight, with
an apple orchard near the bottom and larger oak trees at
the top. “Simply amazing!” said Jill to herself as she took
a photo with her phone. It was springtime and the grass
on the hillside was covered in a blanket of white daisies.
Without wasting any more time, Jill carried her skateboard
and walked up the hill.
Nearing the top, she heard the sound of someone
whistling. Jack was busy filling up buckets of water from
the pond. As the other townsfolk seldom went there, he had
nothing to fear from being cheerful.
“Hi there!” a voice shouted to him. Jack was surprised
to see a girl around his age walking towards him. “Uh,

hello,” he replied. Jack thought Jill was a stranger as she
was seldom seen in town. “Are you lost?” Jack asked. “No,
I live on the other side of Happyville. My name’s Jill,” she
said in a friendly tone. “And I’m Jack. Guess that makes us
a nursery rhyme then,” said Jack teasingly. “Very funny,”
replied Jill, but before she could continue, Jack pointed
to her skateboard and protectors and asked, “Haven’t you
come to the wrong place to skate? You should try the road
downhill from the mayor’s mansion. But be careful not to
sound too happy!”
Jill chose not to reveal who she was. “This is the first
time I’ve visited this hill. The scenery is so peaceful,”
she said. Jack continued with his work. “I live in that
farmhouse over there,” he explained, “and I’ve got to fetch
water for the weekend.” Shocked to hear this, Jill asked,
“You don’t have running water at home?” “No gas or
electricity either,” replied Jack.
Jill grabbed an empty pail and stepped on some stones
above the pond water. She wanted to help fetch water. All
of a sudden two blackbirds swooped past her shoulder.
“Aaagh . . . .” she yelled. As Jill turned her body to see what
it was, she twisted her ankle and fell into the pond.
Jack jumped into the water and carried Jill back to the
grass. “Lucky it’s not deep,” he said. Jill felt pain in her leg.
She looked down to see a deep cut below her knee. “That
looks bad,” said Jack in a worried voice. “I’ll run to get the
doctor.” “No don’t!” cried Jill. “I don’t want my father to
know.”

Jack carried Jill back to his house. “Dad, are you back
yet?” he shouted, opening the door. Bella was reading a
book. Without looking up she asked “Jack, I need help
with my homework.” When she saw Jack carrying a girl she
became excited. “Who is she? Are you playing a fireman’s
game?” Looking at his sister, he replied “This is Jill”. “And
Jill, meet my little sister, Bella.” Bella didn’t like being called
‘little’ but Jack cut her short before she could say anything.
“Jill hurt her leg. We need to clean the wound.”

Jill looked around the small living room whilst Jack
washed her wound. There was only an old torn sofa and
broken armchair. “Oouch!” Jill cried as Jack wrapped a
piece of cloth around her leg. Farmer Bert was too poor to
even buy bandages or plaster.
Bella, who had been staring at Jill all this time, asked
“Where do you live?” “I live on a hill on the other side
of town,” answered Jill. “But nobody lives there except
the wicked mayor!” said Bella appearing puzzled. “Well,
actually he’s my father,” Jill said in a sheepish manner.
Hearing this made Bella lose her temper. She stood in front
of Jill with arms on her hips and shouted angrily, “If he’s
your father, then you will never be our friend.” Bella then
rudely showed Jill the door, “Get out now!” she ushered.
Jack scolded his sister. “That’s enough Bella. You can’t say
such things!” Bella ran to the kitchen in tears.
The room began to get dark with the sun setting. Jill
noticed Jack lighting oil lamps in the living room. She

realised now how poor his family was. “I think I better
get home now,” she said as she tried to stand up. “I’ll take
you back on my bicycle,” offered Jack in a kind voice. He
helped Jill to her feet and seated her on the bicycle. It was
only when they arrived at the town centre that Jill realised
she left her skateboard on the hill. “Don’t worry. I’ll bring it
to you another day,” Jack reassured her. Although they only
met for the first time, Jill thought to herself, “Hmmmm,
this boy is my kind of friend.”
Finally, Jack pushed Jill up the path leading to her
family mansion. He rang the doorbell. Nanny Dob opened
the huge front door. “Where have you been? I was worried
sick. Good gracious! You’ve hurt your leg?” asked the nanny.
“I cut myself when I fell into the water,” explained Jill. “I
called your phone many times but it just rang and rang and
then went to voicemail,” Nanny Dob said anxiously.

Jill searched her pocket for her smartphone but it was
not there. Realising that the phone must have dropped into
the water, Jack added jokingly “Maybe it was a fish that got
the voicemail!” Nanny Nob turned to face Jack. “Sorry, I
didn’t get your name?” “I’m Jack. My dad is farmer Bert and
we live on the other side of town,” Jack answered. “Thanks
for bringing Jill home. It’s very kind of you,” the nanny
said.
Nanny Dob immediately rushed to the first aid box to
attend to Jill’s wound. “Would you like to stay for some
supper Jack? My father won’t be back for a while,” Jill
asked. “Thanks, but I better get back to the farm as Bella
is all alone,” Jack said as he glanced at the huge clock on
the wall. Nanny Dob showed Jack to the door and said
“Thanks again for rescuing Jill. Perhaps you both could
have a play-date soon?” Jack wasn’t sure what to say “Yes,
hope to see you again, but I don’t know really how to play.”
Nanny Dob looked confused as she shut the front door.

The week passed quickly and it was Saturday again.
Jill’s wound was almost totally healed. Nanny Dob went
to the bakery to buy freshly baked buns for teatime. Baker
Bob was polite towards the nanny but he always seemed
a little cold. She thought he was shy but Bob was careful
not to show his true feelings. He did find Nanny Dob very
friendly, but he was unsure if the mayor had asked her to
spy on the townsfolk.
After paying for her buns, Nanny Dob turned towards
the shop door and was surprised to see Jack staring at the
delicious cakes in the window. She rushed out to greet the
boy. “Hello, young man!” she greeted with a huge smile,
and ignoring the orders of the mayor. She continued to ask,
“Are you buying cakes also?” “Oh no . . . . ,” replied Jack,
hesitating to say anymore. Jill had already described how
poor Jack’s family was and so she needed no further words
from the boy.
Jack was carrying Jill’s skateboard under one of his arms.
“Are you returning this to Jill?” she asked. Jack nodded. “So
sweet of you. Come into the shop. I want to buy some of
the baker’s delicious strawberry tarts for your family.” Jack
hesitated, feeling a little shy, but Nanny Dob insisted and
ordered six tarts to be packed into a cake box.

Jack wanted to hand the skateboard to the nanny when
they left the shop. Before he could do this, Nanny Dob
placed her arms around his shoulder. “Come on over to the
house. Jill would love to see you,” she suggested. Feeling
a little torn, Jack answered, “Oh really? I’d like to but I
should get back to help my Dad.” “Just a short while,”
insisted the nanny. “The mayor won’t be back until later.
Jill’s been longing to play with a true friend.” “OK then, if
you’re sure,” replied Jack who felt excited at making a good
friend out of Jill.
Jack was simply lost for words when he saw how huge
the mayor’s mansion was. Jill had two huge rooms all to
herself. Besides her bedroom, she also had her own living
area where she ‘hung out’ most of the time. She also had
her own bathroom with a huge bathtub and jacuzzi.
“Wow, Jill you live in a palace,” Jack uttered in amazement.
“Err . . . yeah well, I guess that’s how I was brought up,” Jill
replied, feeling a little embarrassed.

The two wasted no time going through Jill’s wardrobe
of Halloween costumes, and her huge library of DVDs.
Jack’s eyes lit up as he walked passed shelf after shelf of
books. Jill showed Jack her Enid Blyton collection and
said proudly, “I have over 300 of her books.” “Wow,
awesome!” Jack marveled. “You’ve got the whole collection
of Secret Seven as well,” he added. “My favourite is the
Naughtiest Girl stories,” said Jill pulling out one of the
collection. “Yeah, my mom used to read that to me when
I was younger. I was seven when she passed away,” Jack
said, sounding a little sad. Controlling his emotions, he
continued, “I bet your favourite character is Elizabeth?” Jill
nodded with a smile and answered, “But if I was Elizabeth,
I would have preferred Robert to Julian as my friend.”

Seeing that thinking of his mom was making Jack sad,
Jill led him to her huge L-shaped desk. She handed him
one of her iPad’s. Jack’s eyes lit up. “Wow! I always wanted
one of these, but we don’t even have electricity at home.”
Jill then asked him what channels he liked watching on the
internet. Jack seemed puzzled and explained, “I sometimes
go to the library to use the computer. It’s mainly to find
things for school work.”

Jill tapped her YouTube App and showed Jack how to
search for videos on any subject. They eventually settled
on poisonous snakes and slouched back on a cosy bean bag
to watch. Jack was clearly a nature lover. Jill also liked to
roam the countryside. Instead, she felt a prisoner inside her
family mansion.
The two of them were making plans to have a picnic
on the hill when they heard Nanny Dob’s knock on the
door. “Children, it’s time for some lunch.” Jill was about to
slide down the banister of the grand staircase again but Jack
stopped her, thinking that Nanny Dob would not approve.
Suddenly, they heard a hoarse voice coming from the
basement. “Bring me more food! Hurry will you, I’m still
starving.” “Who’s that shouting?” Jack asked. Nanny Dob,
not wishing to say too much, led them quickly into the
huge dining hall. Just before he entered, Jack caught a
glance of the cook rushing down the basement stairs with a
huge pot of stew and a plate covered in boiled potatoes.
On the long mahogany dining table was a delicious
spread of Jill’s favourite dishes prepared by the kitchen staff.
There was hand-made spinach filled ravioli for starters and
a main course of roast chicken with roasted carrots and
potatoes. The table was decorated with bowls of exotic
fruits from all over the world. Two places were elegantly
prepared with the finest porcelain plates and stainless
steel cutlery. Jack couldn’t believe how long the table was.
Counting the dining chairs he uttered, “It’s big enough for
eighteen people!”
As Jack got stuck into the ravioli, Jill broke the silence,
“Otto, my dad’s handyman, lives in the basement.”
Jack looked puzzled. “Why does he live down there? He
seems hungry.” Nanny Dob, who was listening to their
conversation, butted in, “Otto has a huge appetite. He is
a big fellow but his appearance is a little scary.” Jill added,

“He’s as strong as an ox. My father treats him like one as

Jack and Jill were just about to tuck into their dessert,
freshly baked apple pie, when Mayor Rich barged open the
door. “Hello, my precious girl!” he greeted. Staring at Jill’s
guest, her father asked, in an unfriendly tone, “And who
do we have here then?” Jill got off her chair and placed her
hand on Jack’s shoulder. “This is Jack. He’s Farmer Bert’s
son.” Before Jack could mutter a greeting, Mayor Rich said
in a raised voice, “I know he’s that lazy labourer’s son. I
want to know what is he doing in my house.” Jill started to
explain, “But father, he’s my friend and . . . .”
Mayor Rich didn’t bother to listen to Jill’s explanation.
Pointing to Nanny Dob, he shouted angrily, “And you
Nanny Dob. I am disappointed in you!” Mayor Rich then
pulled Jack off his chair and ordered, “Get out of my house
now and don’t let me catch you with my daughter again!”

As the mayor pushed Jack out of the front door, Nanny
Dob and Jill both pleaded, “But Jack hasn’t done anything
wrong! Please let him . . . .” Before they could finish, the
mayor shouted, “Silence! Jill go to your room now!” He
then slammed the front door as Jack stumbled down the
stone steps.
Tears welled up in Jill’s eyes as she reached her bedroom.
Flopping on to her bed, she started to sob. On the table
where she placed her iPad, were the strawberry tarts that
Nanny Dob had bought for Jack.

Life was never the same at the mayor’s mansion after
Jill’s play-date had turned sour. She rarely spoke a word
to her father and didn’t bother to look up when he spoke
to her. For Jill, it was now crystal clear that her father was
simply trying to ‘buy’ her love with his endless presents.
Nanny Dob went about her chores as normal even
though she could feel that the mayor was now very distant
towards her. Three days after the play-date, she went to

see Baker Bob. “Hello, Bob! Remember those tarts I
bought last week?” she asked. Not trusting the nanny, Bob
answered in a careful manner, “Yes? Was there something
wrong with the taste?” “Oh no, I had bought them for Jack
but in the end he didn’t get to share them with his family,”
she answered. Nanny Dob then continued and explained
what had happened at the play-date.
Hearing this, Bob seemed to warm up and spoke in a
more friendly tone, “Poor Bert and his children. I know
now how selfish I have been. I was scared and I hurt cute
little Bella’s feelings.” With a big sigh, the baker continued,
“She looked forward so much to my cakes and buns.”
Nanny Dob stopped him from feeling more guilty.
“We’ve got to do something to change all this,” she replied.
Baker Bob was now excited. “I shall bake my special vanilla
sponge cake and chocolate donuts for Bella. I’ll bring them
to the farm later.” The nanny cut in, “Wait! Can you get a
message to Jack? Jill wants to have a picnic.” Bob’s face now
beamed with a huge smile. This was the first time he looked
so jolly since the meeting of the townsfolk. “I heard the
mayor will be away again this Sunday,” Bob said excitedly.
“He is trying to bully the folks in the neighbouring town to
make him their mayor.”
Sunday arrived. Farmer Bert was cleaning the cow shed.
Little Bella was sitting on a stone outside the front door
washing clothes in a big wooden tub. Jack was mending
the barn door. Suddenly, there was a honk of a car horn.
Everyone looked up. They were surprised to see Baker Bob’s
van drive up.

Jill was the first to climb out of the van. Jack dropped
his tools and ran over to greet her with a hug. “Never
thought you would remember about the picnic,” he said.
Before Jill could say anything, Bella shouted from where
she was, “Haven’t you caused enough trouble for my Dad
and my brother?” On hearing this, Farmer Bert rushed over
to his daughter and placed his hand over her mouth. He
then looked at Jill and apologised, “Sorry, I’m sure Bella
didn’t mean what she says.” Bella broke loose from her Dad
and rushed into the house, slamming the door shut after
her.
Bert was surprised to see the other visitors as Nanny
Dob and Baker Bob got out of the van. Bob greeted the
farmer, “Hello Bert! I’ve specially baked some of Bella’s
favourite snacks.” Bert was happy to see the baker and gave
him a big pat on his back. Then turning to Nanny Dob,
Bert said, “You must be Miss Dob. Jack has told me how

kind you’ve been to him.” “Jack is such a lovable boy. I’m
delighted to see how well he and Jill have got on,” Nanny
Dob replied.
“Well, don’t just stand there!” Bob cried out. “Someone
help me carry the picnic things up the hill.” “Hooray!” Jill
and Jack shouted in the background, but Bert felt a little
uneasy. “Do you think we should do this? I mean, what if
the mayor . . . .” Nanny Dob cut him short. “Everyone in
Happyville feels they have had enough of the mayor’s cruel
ways,” she said forcefully.
Baker Bob nodded his head in agreement. “In that
case,” Bert added, with a rare smile on his face, “let’s have
our picnic. It’s wonderful to just be our happy selves again”
One person who was not happy was Bella. After helping
to lay out the picnic by the pond, Baker Bob went to see
her; taking with him a freshly baked chocolate donut and
blueberry muffin.
Jack and his Dad stared at the amazing spread of food.
“This is incredible,” said Jack in astonishment. “I can’t
think when was the last time I had some meat to eat,” Bert
added. Besides the boxes of cakes, buns and bread from
Baker Bob, Nanny Dob had also prepared barbequed ribs
and a huge roast chicken. To everyone’s surprise, Bert then
unwrapped a slab of fresh cheese that he had made on the
farm. “This cheese would have gone to the mayor, but I
think it’s time for a change,” he said happily.

Everyone was enjoying the delicious food, when Baker
Bob turned up with Bella on his shoulders. She had
chocolate stains around her mouth. “Come on, my little
darling,” said Bob as she climbed off his shoulders, “try
some of the vanilla cake I baked for you.”
After gulping down a leg of roast chicken, Jack took
Jill on a tour of the farm. Nanny Dob had brought with
her some of Jill’s storybooks. She tried to make peace with
Bella. “Hey Bella, can I read you a story?” she asked.
Bella kept her distance. She still did not fully trust the
nanny. Baker Bob winked at Nanny Dob and she took this
as a signal to start reading. The nanny cleverly chose Roald
Dahl’s The Magic Finger which was also set on a farm. As

she read, Bob grabbed a plate of ginger biscuits and took
Bella by the hand. They sat down beside Nanny Dob and
soon not even another donut could distract Bella from the
story.
In the shed, Jack showed Jill how to milk a cow.
Squeezing and tugging the teats of a large Jersey cow, he
looked up and said, “Now you try. And make sure you
squeeze the milk into the pail below.” Jill put on a pair of
gloves and sat on the low stool beside the cow. She grabbed
two teats and started to jerk them up and down. Milk
squirted everywhere, including on her face. The Jersey cow
mooed as if to say, “Hey, let the country boy milk me, city
girl!” This made Jill blush but Jack laughed until he was in
stitches.
Nanny Dob read until Bella fell asleep on Baker Bob’s
lap. She then moved over to sit beside Bert. “It must be
tough for Jill without her mother. But at least, she has
someone nice to look after her,” Bert said. “I’m not sure
I can ever replace her mother,” the nanny replied. “I just

don’t understand how Jill’s mom could marry such a terrible
man,” Bert added. “You’re right,” she said. “He seems to
have become even more cruel since his wife went missing.”
“I wonder what happened to her and why did she just pack
up and leave?” Bert thought to himself.
After milking the cows, or at least trying to, Jill went to
the help pick apples. Jack went to fetch something from the
house and joined her at the orchard.
“You forgot to ask for something back.” Jack said
mischievously. “What?” Jill asked. Jack opened up his hand.
It was Jill’s smartphone, the one that she had dropped in
the pond. Since her father had bought her several phones,
she had forgotten about the missing one. “I fished it out of
the pond. It’s a little rusty, but it still works,” he explained.
“It’s yours now, Jack. At least I don’t have to walk all the
way here just to tell you something,” she said jokingly. “But
I can’t even charge it at home as we don’t have electricity,”
Jack said. “I’ll charge it for you later. Keep it for now as it
may come in handy,” Jill replied.
Meanwhile, Nanny Dob and Farmer Bert were clearing
up the picnic things. Bella was still sleeping soundly.
Suddenly, they heard the sound of a police siren. A police
car, followed by the mayor’s huge black limousine, drove
up towards the farmhouse. Hearing the noise, Jack and Jill
rushed back to the picnic spot.

An ugly-looking man got out of the limousine and
rushed over to grab Jill. He was giant-like with a bulging
belly. Before anyone could stop him, he carried Jill, like a
sack of potatoes, back to the limousine. Jill screamed, “Let
me down you beast!” Otto, the handyman, ignored her and
continued to grunt and growl his way back to where the
mayor was standing.
“Police! Arrest this evil man for kidnapping my
daughter!” Mayor Rich ordered, pointing at Farmer Bert.
Jack tried to get in the way of the two policemen but he
was pushed aside. Bella, who was awakened by the noise,
screamed, “Let my Daddy go. He’s not done anything
wrong.” Jack rushed to hug his sister. He stopped her from
getting near the policemen in case they took her away as
well.
Before getting back into the limousine, Mayor Rich
shouted to the rest of them, “Nanny Dob! You can pack

your bags and get out of my house now.” Wagging his

rascal, take your cry-baby sister and leave. I’m giving your
farm to Otto.” On hearing this, Otto raised up his arms
and cheered gloatingly, “Hooray!”
When the cars drove off, Nanny Dob and Baker Bob
tried to comfort little Bella. Tears streamed down her
cheeks. Jack shook his head. It was as if he had just lived
through a nightmare.

Jill was now watched closely after what had happened
at the picnic. Otto would follow her to school and back.
When she got home, she was forbidden to even peep her
head outside the front door. She tried to call Jack on the
mobile phone several times but the phone was switched off.
Both Jack and Bella had to take time off school after
their father had been dragged away. There was just so much
work to do on the farm. And Bella needed comforting as
well.
Nanny Dob had moved in with Jack and Bella. It
took her a while to get used to sleeping on the stone floor.
However, physical comforts were the last thing on her
mind. Her heart was with the children and she had to care
for them for Bert’s sake.
“Why don’t they allow us to visit Dad?” Bella asked in
a sad voice. “The mayor must have told the police not to
allow you to see him,” said the nanny. She then added, “I’ll
go there tomorrow and see if they’ll let me visit.”

Jill spent her time after school walking aimlessly in
her room. She moved from the sofa to her desk and then
plonked herself on to the bean bag. There was no-one
in the mansion that she could talk to. She missed her
nanny but she was more worried about Jack’s father. Jill
grabbed her iPad and tapped the Google App to search for
something. She paused, as if remembering a keyword that
she needed to enter. Then her finger tapped the letters ‘Jack
and Jill’.

When Jack Meets Jill
The police station in Happyville was certainly no house
of joy. It was an old single-story building and there were
three small jail cells in the basement. Farmer Bert was
locked up in one of them.
Bert was leaning against the wall deep in thought.
He looked pale and thin. It felt cold and damp in the
basement, and rats could be heard scurrying from one wall
to the other. The policemen in the office upstairs could hear
him coughing badly. However, not one of them would go
and check on him.
Nanny Dob stared at the police station from the other
side of the street. It was six o’clock in the evening and she
knew that most of the officers would be going off duty
soon. She did not have long to wait. Two policemen came

out of the station. She waited for one minute and then
walked across the street.
Entering the police station, Nanny Dob found one
police officer still on duty. It was Charlie who was kinder
than the others. “Nanny Dob!” said Charlie in surprise.
“What brings you here?” he asked. Nanny Dob knew she
was in luck.
Officer Charlie had visited the mayor’s mansion a few
months back and she had invited him to stay for tea. In
her mind, Charlie was both decent and fair. “Can I see
how Farmer Bert is doing?” Nanny Dob asked. “I’m sorry.
Mayor Rich says he’s not allowed any visitors,” Charlie
replied. “Come on Charlie, just a quick visit. You know
Bert’s health is poorly from all that work on the farm,”
she pleaded. Scratching his head in thought, Charlie then
smiled and said, “Oh, alright. But only just this once. I’ve
heard Bert coughing non-stop these last few days.” Hearing
this, Nanny Dob rushed down the steps to the basement.
In a raised voice, Charlie then added, “Anyway, we will be
moving Bert to the main prison next week and that’s a long
way from here.”
Hearing footsteps, Farmer Bert called out, “Who’s
there?” Before he could say anything more, he had a
coughing fit. “Bert, are you alright?” Nanny Dob asked.
When Bert finished coughing, he greeted her with a smile.
“Nanny Dob. How did they allow you in?” “Oh Bert,
you’ve grown so thin. And you’re coughing badly. I’ll try
to get a doctor over,” she said. “Never mind about me,”
Bert answered. “How are the children?” he asked anxiously.
Nanny Dob tried to answer but Bert spoke first, “I am
worried sick about them. Poor Bella, she must be feeling so
miserable.”
Nanny Dob placed her hand on Bert’s cheeks to
comfort him. “I promise that I shall look after the children
until you get out of here,” she said.

Before she left, Nanny Dob handed Bert a paper bag
with some homemade cheese and apples from the farm and
also fresh bread from Baker Bob’s shop. “I made the cheese
myself, so it may not be as delicious as yours,” she said with
a smile on her face.
The nanny’s kindness cheered Bert up. “Thank you, and
please give the kids a kiss and a huge hug from me,” he said.
Nanny Dob then told Bert what officer Charlie had
said. “They’re moving you to the main prison next week.
So we have to act fast.” “If only I could get hold of Jill,
but they’ve locked her up at home,” she continued. “Don’t
worry about me. Just look after Jack and Bella,” Bert said as
his eyes began to swell with tears.

Meanwhile, back at the mayor’s mansion, Jill fiddled
with her other smartphone. She was cross that Jack had

she did on Google gave her an idea and she needed to tell
Jack all about this. Jill keyed in the number of her other
phone and typed a message to Jack. Talking to herself, she
pleaded, “For Heaven’s sake Jack, just switch on the phone!”

Jack was up by the pond fetching water when he
stepped on the same stone that Jill had fallen from. This
reminded him about Jill’s phone. How silly of him not to
remember to switch it on.
Despite the endless chores on the farm, Jack couldn’t
stop thinking about his Dad and, of course, his new friend.
He rushed back to the farmhouse and opened the drawer
where he had kept it. The battery was very low but the
phone still worked. Jack saw there were seven missed calls
and one message. He opened the message. It was from Jill.
The opening line read: Jack, remember the nursery rhyme? I
have a plan.

Mayor Rich, meanwhile, had his own plan. He called
another meeting of the townsfolk for the next day. The
mayor planned to announce that Farmer Bert was going to
be sent to prison and that Otto would be taking over the
farm.
Otto wore his best clothes the next morning. But no
matter how he tried, the jacket top and his body were a
misfit. The trousers was way too short. Also, he could barely
get the first button on. Otto had been eating well recently
and the bulge in his tummy was clear for all to see. The
jacket actually belonged, at one time, to the mayor and he
was more than two heads shorter than Otto.
As Mayor Rich stepped on to the platform prepared
by the townsfolk, Otto, following closely behind, raised
his coarse voice, “Everyone be silent!” The main street was
packed. No-one dared to even whisper.
Meanwhile, two policemen accompanied Farmer Bert
out of the police station. Bert’s hands were cuffed. He

had lost a lot of weight but he was still able to walk. The
townsfolk were shocked to see him in this state and they
could be heard murmuring, “Look at Bert.” “It must be
terrible in that basement cell.” “He’s so thin. Have they
been feeding him?”

Jill was anxious to know if Jack had read her message.
It was too late for guessing. Somehow, she had to break
out of the mansion and get to the meeting. As soon as her
father left home, Jill opened her bedroom window and tried
to slide down a drainpipe. She was halfway down when
she heard a familiar voice. “Just jump. I’ll catch you,” said
Nanny Dob in a hushed tone. “Nanny, is it you? How
did you know . . . .” Before Jill could finish, the nanny
continued, “Jack got your message and knows what to do.
Let’s hurry. Your father has called a meeting.”
Mayor Rich spoke to the townsfolk, “Fellow residents of
Happyville, I have called this meeting to tell you why I am

sending Farmer Bert to prison.” Jack tried to get closer to
where his father was standing.
“Bert is not only lazy, he is also evil. Last week, he tried
to kidnap my daughter.” Bert was shaking his head and
shouted, “That’s a lie!” The crowd was shocked that he
would dare cut in on the mayor’s speech. Mayor Rich was
quick to answer. “How dare you interrupt me! Officers!
Tape his mouth!” One of the policemen immediately sealed
Bert’s mouth with masking tape.
“Let go of my father!” cried out Jack. Pointing at the
mayor, Jack continued, “It’s you that should be punished.
My Dad’s done nothing wrong.” Stunned by Jack’s courage,
the mayor ordered the police officers to seize the boy.
Staring at Jack with dagger-like eyes, Mayor Rich shouted,
“How dare you! You good for nothing rascal!”
Jill and Nanny Dob arrived on the scene just when
two more policemen had grabbed Jack’s arms. They rushed
to Bella who had been standing beside Jack. Nanny Dob
placed her arm around Bella and comforted her, “Don’t
worry. Everything will be alright. You’ll see.”
“Let me say something before you drag me away,” Jack
pleaded. Having calmed down a little, the mayor said, “The
whole town knows what a fair person I am. Say your last
word then, boy.” Jack then went on, “I think it’s only fair
then that my Dad is given a chance to get the farm back. I
think there should be a duel to see who the winner is.”
On hearing this, the mayor laughed until he bent over.
“What kind of duel are you thinking of, boy?” the mayor
asked. “A water duel,” Jack answered. “On the hill by our
farm is a pond. The first one to fetch the most water down
to the main street here is the winner,” Jack added.
There were sounds of gasps from some of the
townsfolk. They couldn’t imagine how Jack could walk
up to the mayor and ask for a duel. Mayor Rich then
replied, “Everyone knows that, as the mayor, I can punish

wrongdoers in any way that’s fit. I don’t need a duel to settle
anything.” “However, as a kind man I will consider giving
them a second chance,” he continued.
Mayor Rich ordered the townsfolk to carry two large
water tanks to the centre of the main street. He then
announced, “Otto and Jack will fight this duel in place of
Bert and me!” The crowd shrieked at this news, thinking
that the huge handyman would win hands down. Over in a
corner, Jill and Nanny Dob had grins on their face as if they
had something up their sleeves.
The duel was about to begin. Otto was all smiles as if
he had already won. He rolled up his sleeves and lifted two
huge buckets big enough for his backside to fit into. Jack
nodded to his Dad and readied himself.
Mayor Rich announced to the crowd, “If Otto wins,
he will take over the farm immediately. And if Jack is the
winner . . . .” Jack interrupted before the mayor could
finish, “If I win, then my Dad is set free and we get our
farm back . . . . and Happyville gets to be happy again.”
“Very well, boy, but if you lose, you must also pay the
price by becoming my kitchen hand,” the mayor answered.
Mayor Rich was certain that Otto would win hands down
and so he never imagined having to let Bert free.

The mayor counted out aloud, “One, Two, Three. Go!”
Otto belted up the hill with his big feet. Jack ran as fast as
he could but he was only halfway up the hill when Otto
started filling up his huge buckets.
Seeing Jack arriving on the scene, Otto mischievously
snatched one of Jack’s buckets and tossed it into the field.
Jack now lost more precious time. It didn’t take long for
Otto to fill two-thirds of his water tank. Jack was lagging
way behind but he refused to give up.
Jill, Bella and Nanny Dob cheered loudly for Jack.
Mayor Rich, on the other hand, was preparing to celebrate
Otto’s victory. He shouted mockingly to Bert, “Your useless
boy can only talk. Soon, he’ll be washing my pots and pans
for the rest of his life.”
Meanwhile, Bob had been busy baking a surprise. Just
as Otto could be seen running towards the town, Bob
carried two huge baskets out of his bakery.
Otto reached the water container and emptied his
buckets into it. Just then Jill, holding a freshly baked muffin
in one hand and a chocolate donut in the other, shouted
to Otto, “Time for a snack.” Whiffing the freshly baked
aroma, Otto’s nose locked on, like a radar, to Baker Bob’s
baskets of treats.
Besides muffins and donuts, Bob had baked raisin
buns and sausage rolls. Otto gulped down all the pastries
and buns one after the other. Soon, Bob had to return to
the bakery for more. Finally, Otto opened his mouth and
burped loudly. This was followed by a huge yawn as Otto
collapsed by the roadside opposite the bakery. He dozed off
immediately.

Jack, by this time, had made several more trips to the

began to lose their fear of the dreaded mayor. They started
to cheer Jack on.
Mayor Rich suddenly realised what was going on and
rushed over to the sleeping giant. Nudging Otto, the mayor
shouted, “Wake up you fool! Can’t you see what’s going

Jack was now ahead and was reaching the top of the

was desperate by now. He grabbed one of Otto’s buckets
and filled it with water. “Aargh . . . . It’s the Tsunami!”
screamed Otto after being rudely awakened. “Get up and
fill up the tank! You stupid oath!” the mayor yelled. Otto
finally pushed himself up.
Winning, at any cost, was all that mattered to Mayor
Rich, even if it meant cheating one’s way to glory. Before
pouring the water over Otto, he had called his chauffeur
who rushed to the scene and bundled Otto into the
limousine.
Seeing what was happening, Jill shouted, “Stop them!
They’re cheating!” The crowd started to boo and jeer the
mayor. Some tried to block the road, but it was too late and
the limousine sped away up the hill.

By the time the limousine reached the top of the hill,
Jack had already filled up his pails. However, rather than
rushing back down straightaway, Jack chose to wait for
Otto. The huge handyman bent down slowly to fill his
buckets. All the delicious pastries and buns had clearly
slowed Otto down. His belly was so huge that he didn’t
even notice Jack crawling under him to tie the laces from
his two shoes together.
Both of them then started the final dash back to the
main street. Otto tripped and tumbled all the way down
the hill. Jack continued to the finish line and poured his
remaining water into the tank.

The crowd was jubilant. Happyville was a jolly place
once more. Baker Bob lifted Jack on to his shoulders. For
the first time, Bella hugged Jill and she, in turn, kissed the
young girl. Nanny Dob was touched when she saw the two
of them.
Mayor Rich couldn’t believe his eyes. He tried in vain
to silence the crowd. “Arrest them all!” he ordered, but the
policemen refused to obey. Instead, Charlie, the young
policeman removed Bert’s handcuffs and set him free. Jack
climbed down from Bob’s shoulders and rushed to attend
to his Dad.
Nanny Dob, at this point, tried to draw the attention
of the cheering crowds. “Dear friends and neighbours!
Can I have some quiet please! Today, not only do we
rejoice for Farmer Bert and his family, but for the whole
of Happyville,” she announced to huge applause from the
crowd. “But I also want you all to know something else,”
she went on, “Mayor Rich was telling a lie all along when
he said that his wife, Debbie, left home without a word.”
There was silence now as everyone listened intently. The
nanny continued, “The truth is that he tried to drown her
in a river when they went on a trip together.”
The townsfolk were shocked to hear this. “What, he’s
a murderer?” “It can’t be true,” some of them bellowed.
Mayor Rich pointed his finger at the nanny and yelled
to the crowd, “How can you believe such an evil lie from
someone who has lost her job?” “You are talking nonsense
and have no proof,” he added.
To prove her point, Nanny Dob then pulled off her
wig and peeled off her mask to reveal a face with smooth
complexion and wavy brown hair. The crowd was stunned
into total silence.
Jill, who was standing next to the nanny, couldn’t
believe her eyes. “Mom, is this really you?” she asked as she
touched her mom’s silky hair.

Mayor Rich was shocked and spoke in a trembling
voice, “Debbie? Why, it can’t be . . . ? I thought you’d . . . .”
Debbie cut him short. Switching back to her real voice,
she then described what had really happened. “We went
boating when he hit me with an oar and then pushed me
into the water.” Looking at the mayor straight in the eye,
Debbie continued, “You left me for dead. But I came back
as somebody else to expose you and to protect Jill. You’re an
evil man. All you wanted were my family jewels.”
Mayor Rich was left speechless. He hoped his
wife would have mercy on him. “Darling, just let me
explain . . . .” he pleaded. Before he could finish, Debbie

ordered the police to arrest him. Mayor Rich was
handcuffed and led away to the cheers of the whole town.
Tears rolled down Jill’s cheeks as she was reunited with
her mom. Debbie planted one kiss after another on her
daughter’s face as they hugged each other tightly.
There was, however, one other resident of Happyville
who was not celebrating. Otto snored soundly at the spot
where he had landed after tumbling down the hill.
Jack pushed his way through the crowd to greet Jill.
Pretending to be angry, she crossed her arms and asked him,
“So, you finally switched the phone on then?” Jack handed
her the phone and said, “You better charge the batteries. It’s
flat.” Everyone laughed.

Eight months after the duel, Happyville lived up to its
name again. All the residents went about their business with
huge smiles on their faces. Mayor Rich was never seen in
Happyville again. Word had it that he had been sent to a
prison faraway.
Baker Bob was back to his daily routine of treating the
school children to his freshly baked delights. He now had
a new assistant, Otto, who had lost half the bulge in his
belly. Otto’s new boss kept him busy for sure. However, as a
reward for working hard, the baker made sure Otto had at
least a plate full of pastries each day.
And yet, not everything in the town was the same as
before. Outside the mayor’s mansion was a huge ‘FOR
SALE’ sign. Debbie had decided to sell the family home.
She didn’t want to be reminded of the terrible years of her
marriage to the cruel mayor. Jill also wanted nothing to do
with the mansion that she once regarded as a prison.
On the other side of town, Farmer Bert’s farmhouse has
had a real makeover. In the place of the rickety wooden
cottage was now a two-storey brick-house. The ground floor
had large window panes decorated with white latticework.
Bella was relaxing on a rocking chair by a huge sun
porch which fronted the house. In her hands she delicately
fondled a brand new tablet. “Bella, come in and drink your

milk,” a woman’s voice could be heard shouting from the
kitchen. Bella, however, was totally absorbed in the latest
episode of My Little Pony. Yes, dear Readers, you’ve guessed
correctly. Bert’s new house now has wifi, and, for that
matter, also electricity, gas and running water.
It wasn’t only the new farmhouse that was bigger, the
farm had also grown in size. The fields next to the newly
build cow shed now included grazing land for both cows
and sheep. Not far from the freshly-painted barn, was a
stable big enough for three horses. Normally, the larger
farm would have meant extra work for Farmer Bert.
However, his family was also now larger than before.
A woman’s voice in the kitchen could be heard nagging
Bella again. “Come on, sweetie. Your bones won’t grow
strong enough to ride those horses if you don’t drink your
milk!”
Bert and Debbie were busy preparing a wholesome
Sunday lunch for the family. The identical gold rings on
their fingers confirmed that they were now husband and
wife. Bert took the pork ribs out of the newly-bought gas
oven. Debbie was busy chopping vegetables for a fresh
salad. Debbie pulled Bert’s ear playfully when she saw that

he had burnt the spareribs. “I think I liked you better as
Nanny Dob,” he said jokingly.
Up by the pond, Jack and Jill raced on horseback down
the hill. Jack rode an imposing young black stallion. Ahead
of him was Jill on a brown filly. “Hurry up slow coach,” Jill
teased him.

As the two riders trotted towards the stable, Bella yelled
out, “Hey Sis, can you come and help me?” Jill dismounted
her filly first and walked to the sun porch, whilst Jack led
both horses back to the stable.
“Looks like you’re really hooked on iPad now,” Jill
said. “Can you help me download this game? It costs two
dollars?” Bella asked. Jill glanced at the screen over Bella’s
shoulders and read out aloud, “Duel with Jack?” What
kind of App is this?” “You won’t believe this. You’ve got to
compete with Jack to fetch the most water,” Bella explained
in an excited voice.

Jack arrived on the scene just as Bella was talking.
She turned the screen towards him so that he could read
the game’s description. “Duel with Jack? Sounds like they
should be paying us for this game instead!” said Jack
looking astonished.
The two girls burst out laughing until Debbie opened
the door and beckoned the children to come in for the
family’s Sunday lunch.

“I can’t find my shoes!” Bella shouted as Jill rushed
upstairs to grab her school satchel. They both shared a
room, each with their own writing desk and a custom-made
bunk bed. Bella, being the little sister, got her way and
chose the top bunk.
“Will you step on it, children? Otto will be here soon,”
Debbie said in an urgent tone. “Someone has taken my
shoes,” Bella replied angrily.
Sensing what had happened, Debbie pointed her finger
at Jill, “This is no time for fun. Give Bella her shoes back
now!” Jill opened her cupboard and, with a grin on her
face, replied, “Oh! Sorry Sis. I must have mistaken them for
mine.”
Baker Bob’s bread van could be seen entering the
driveway as Jack, Jill and Bella kissed Debbie goodbye.
Otto, who was in the driving seat, got out of the van and
handed each child a paper bag of snacks specially prepared
by the baker. “Good morning children!” Otto greeted with
a huge smile. His voice, although still hoarse, had lost that
frightful growl to it.
“Shall we have a duel this weekend?” asked Bella
cheekily. “Sure! Let’s see who can tumble down the hill the
fastest,” Otto answered. Jill shook her head and said, “No
way! That’ll be unfair. You’re far too heavy.”
Otto had now become the children’s giant play-mate.
On his day off, he would often come to the farm to help
Bert and spend time with the family. Jack preferred to do

things on his own but Bella loved to sit on Otto’s shoulders
as he ran about the fields where the sheep grazed.
The van approached the schools. It was nearly six
months since Jill and her mother Debbie had moved in.
Jack was now twelve years old and had moved across to
the secondary school right next door. Jill now attended the
same primary school as Bella, except that, as an eleven year
old, this would be her last year there. The school bell rang
and the children waved goodbye to Otto before rushing to
their classrooms.
It took a long time for Debbie to finally sell the
mansion that was once the family home of Mayor Rich,
Jill and herself. The new owners, Edward and Georgina
Swanker, were a wealthy couple who had moved from
the big city in search of a home surrounded by a green
countryside. Their eleven year old twin children, a boy and
a girl, currently attended the local primary school. However,
Georgina, constantly complained about the teaching
standards and she blamed the teachers for her children’s lack
of achievements.
As the bell for recess sounded, Mrs Clark motioned
for Bella to come over. She was still Bella’s English teacher.
“Well done, Bella!” she said, handing Bella her marked
homework. Your comprehension and writing has improved
so much.” Bella liked being praised by her favourite teacher
and, beaming a huge smile, replied, “Thank you, Mrs
Clark. My sister Jill has been doing a lot of reading with
me.”
Outside in the playground, an unfriendly-looking boy
and girl, were huddled in one corner. They were surrounded
by a small group of older children who seemed to be
listening intently at the boy who did most of the talking.
The boy, Rufus, was tall for his age and big-boned. He
had thin lips and his eyes were close-set. There was a mean

look about his face, even when he didn’t seem angry. He
had blonde hair cut short above his ears.
Ruth, the girl, was always seen together with Rufus
during recess. Ruth was slightly shorter than Rufus but also
had a strong physique. Her short hair and slightly angular
face also made her look menacing. Like Rufus, she had
blonde hair and blue eyes.
Suddenly, something or somebody caught their eye and
they pushed their way out of the corner.
Bella was carrying her bag of snacks into the
play-ground. Although now eight years old, Bella still
looked petite and short for her age.
Before she knew it, Rufus and Ruth rushed her from
behind and knocked her over. Her snacks fell out of the
bag. She was about to pick them up when the two bullies
stepped on the delicious cupcakes and biscuits; grinding
them into little morsels. Rufus then pushed Bella’s face
down to the ground and said sneeringly, “Go on then, lick
them up!”

Jill had just entered the playground when she heard
Bella screaming. Rushing over to help her sister, she
shouted, “Leave my sister alone you horrible bullies!”
Rufus and Ruth both ran away as fast as they could
when they saw Mrs Clark also approaching the scene.
Jill helped Bella up from the ground and then said to the
teacher, “It’s those terrible twins again.”
