How do I choose a data package?
The internet turned out to be a bigger deal than previously thought. We as adults in the new age have to adapt. Choosing a data package can be intimidating but here are some guidelines to follow to make the decision making process a little bit easier.
Let’s start with the golden rule: rather too much than too little. There are few things as annoying as running out of data especially when you are very busy. So, the best thing to remember, is to take a package with more data than you think. Yes, the consultant will look at you as if you are an idiot if you say you ONLY send emails. Many people don’t realize all the ways that data can be taken from your phone and/or computer. Some people think that Facebook and especially Whatsapp use some other kind of magical denomination.
Step one: What?
What device will be using data? Will it be just your phone or do you need to connect a laptop simultaneously? Will the data be for your staff’s computers or just yourself? This will determine the way you use data, for example a router that can service up to 10 devices at any given point or just adding a bundle to your phone contract.
Step two: Where?
Will you be stationary when using data? Or do you move around a lot with your devices? This will determine whether you should invest in a router or a dongle. Many people prefer the pocket router however, with a battery life of about 8 hours you can even shove it in your handbag and take it to work! A wifi router, the lone standing unit, is however a fantastic way to make phone calls from the device at discounted prices. If you have sufficient data at work, you might invest in a lone standing device for the house. Or vica versa!
Step three: What?
What will you be using data for? Keep in mind that your phone and computer will have updates available every now and then. All your apps will also need updating to perform well. These are not facts we take into consideration and we should. Also, please take note that Whatsapp uses data for sending as well as receiving! Every single photo you receive, every single You should see this! Video, takes data from the person sending as well as the person receiving it. Written emails won’t take more than a couple of kilobytes (the smallest denomination of data) but as soon as videos or photos are added, the amount of data being taken becomes higher.
Here are some guidelines:
1 written email, no pics: 127 kilobytes, 0.0127 megabytes
1 written whatsapp, no pics: 127 kilobytes, 0.0127 megabytes
1 photo, email or whatsapp: 1.2 meg, 0.012 gig
