approach
• Developed Python code to wrangle and clean 103,693 Twitter (now X) messages containing investors’ opinions
around FTSE100 index.
• Utilised VADER natural language tool kit in Python to carry out sentiment analysis and classified investor sentiment on FTSE100 into positive and negative sentiment.
• Constructed daily investor sentiment index using intra-day sentiment results from VADER analysis together with
an appropriate aggregation framework.
• Analysed the investor sentiment index against the FTSE100 Index using an appropriate econometric model that
addresses the study’s objectives and research questions.
• The study provides a nuanced understanding of the semi-strong efficient market hypothesis and dynamics of leverage effect of news.
