One day while I was in Benin City, I saw a boy on the street. He was about 13 years old.
He was sitting on the road and begging for money. I felt pained and triggered by it.
So I went to him and asked him few questions.
I asked what his name was and he said Friday. I asked why he was on the road begging and he said "no money" and that his aunty whom he stays with went out to hustle and he was left with nothing. No food, no water... nothing.
Then I asked one question, I asked;
“what would you want to become in life?” He said a Lawyer. Then I asked if he believes he can become a Lawyer and he said no. In that moment, my heart bled and I felt crushed.
I had never seen anyone who said they don't believe their dreams would come to pass.
I was perplexed right there. I went further to why and he doesn't believe he can become a Lawyer and then he said he doesn't believe because he is not in school and there is no money to afford it.
That right there was so hard to hear. This is a young person who could become so great in life but quality and affordable education is not available to him.
Since then I have been so particular about education and how it could affect our country Nigeria positively.
We can have a better and improved nation if children get access to quality education but today, according to UNICEF around 10.5 million of the country's youngsters aged 5-14 years are not in school.
Many of them go on to live degraded lives and become thugs and a menace to society.
They don't have the security of formal education that gives them confidence to achieve great feets in life.
With the right use of technology we can be able to provide education to those who need it.
Digital Learning Platforms for example, can help overcome the barriers of access to quality education in remote or underserved areas of Nigeria. These platforms can provide interactive and engaging educational content, including video lectures, online quizzes, and educational games.
Technology can be used to enhance teacher training programs and provide ongoing support to educators.
Online platforms and digital resources can offer training modules, webinars, and virtual workshops for teachers to upgrade their skills and knowledge. Additionally, technology can facilitate communication and collaboration among teachers, allowing them to share best practices, resources, and teaching strategies.
If these are put in place and heavily supported by companies, the private sector and government then children like Friday can believe in their dreams and believe that dream can be a reality.
I care about solving this problem because I really want to see my country in a great place. A place where education is quality and affordable, where her children can grow and be able to compete with the rest of the world and take thier place as one of the greatest Nations on earth like she was meant to be.
