1)Introduction
Created on 22 December 1922, the Soviet Union was the largest country in the world at this time. It
was the first socialist country in the world, where the ideas of communism were widely spread and it
was built mainly and based on communist ideas to build one ideal communist and socialist society. The
economy of the country was based on a centrally planned economy which led to rapid collectivization
and industrialization. But everything came on a heavy price-the reform in the agriculture sector were
not so successful as industrialization reform and this led to starvation where millions of people died- as
the biggest famine in the Soviet Union was Holodomor (famine in the Soviet Union between 1932
and 1933) which killed between 3 and 7 million people.B ut despite the difficulties, the Soviet Union
became one
-Harsh climate
Yes, the harsh climate was for both sides, the Soviet Union was fighting at the same climate and
temperatures as Nazi’s Germany did. Soviets tanks, artillery and trucks were moving at the same
temperatures too, but the main difference was that Soviets were prepared and had an experience to fight
in such harsh conditions, something that Germans weren't prepared at all. At the beginning of the war,
Hitler thought that he would crush the Soviet Union for several months and until the winter, Germany
would occupy every European territory of the USSR until the Ural Mountains where he planned to put
his army in a defensive position and the crushed Soviet Union will easily accept the peace with Nazi’s
Germany.
One of the reasons why Nazi’s army was not equipped properly because this was part of the deception.
Until to the last moment, Stalin didn't believe in the “Operation Barbarossa” and thought that this was
a deception to make German-Soviet Union relations worsen despite the alerts from different sides. One
of the main reasons not to believe was the fact that German’s army was not equipped for the winter
season. Later Hitler understood that the war would be significantly longer than several months and
ordered the winter equipment for the army of Germany…but it was too late. If Germany didn't achieve
the objectives at the beginning, it became the war of attrition, where the Soviet Union had a very big
advantage and Germany would fail in the war…and in the end, this is what happened.
-Experience to fight and defeat foreign invaders
Even that Soviet Union was both a new and young country, it was an heir to Russia and many of the
population there considered themselves as Russians or Soviet Russians because one of the main
fundamentals of Soviet Union was that everyone was equal. From the invasion of Mongols to Swedish,
Ottomans, Polish as the best example would be the invasion of both France and Napoleon where he has
devastatingly defeated retreating with an only small percentage of his original army-the others left were
killed in combat, diseases, deserted or captured. Before the Russian campaign, Napoleon controlled the
majority of Europe with the exception of Great Britain, after the Russian campaign, this was the
beginning of Napoleon. With both Germany and Hitler, the situation was the same-they were the
master of Europe and in total control there. They have difficulties to conquer Great Britain, but
Churchill was not in a position to threaten the position of the Third Reich. After “Operation
Barbarossa” and the fail of it, this was the beginning of the end for both Nazi’s Germany and Hitler
himself because the outcome of the Second world war was decided mainly on the Eastern front, where
at the beginning of the war with Soviet Union, Germany had put 80 % of its army
-High moral from citizens of Soviet Union
