Upon graduating Carleton University, I did something that few grads do: I opened my own consulting business. Young and inexperienced in Ottawa's burgeoning consulting industry, I had to fight my way into meetings and earn the confidence of clients. Over time and with persistence, I developed a reputation for being a reliable researcher, effective writer and competent consultant, who delivered on time and on budget. From simple editing jobs for volunteer organizations to ongoing contracts with government departments or corporate clients, I met and exceeded expectations.
As my client list expanded, so did the scope of work. My core business was media analysis: helping clients comprehend media coverage and how it related to them. I wrote and edited reports and documents thathelped shape decisions and form the basis of corporate and government policy. Clients included the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Health and Welfare Canada, Employment and Immigration Canada, ACF Communications, TESL Ottawa and others.
I liquidized my life and climbed aboard my mountain bike in August, 1992, cycling south from Ottawa, ON, Canada. Slightly more than 12,000km later, having pedalled the eastern seaboard of the US, the western edges of the Gulf of Mexico, through the mountains of southeastern Mexico to tip of Punta Allen in the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, I decided to turn north. Returning to Canada in May of 1993, my life was forever changed. I have travelled the world an average of six months per year since then. From Central and South America to Africa, India and Asia, I am becoming more familiar with the diversity that makes us all human. I have had the occasional photograph or travel piece published
Although I have avoided winter for 2 1/2 decades, I have held a variety of freelance summer contracts. Several years in the marina business, whether as part of the service management team or introducing you to your new boat, taught me that listening to each client is indispensable. I am often found on unique building, renovation and property management projects. Knowing what my client wants and delivering consistently is what earns me repeat customers.
