Wizard of Legend review
The success of The Binding of Isaac caught the gaming world off guard. Not only was it a smash hit of epic
proportions; it has also sparked a renewed interest in roguelike games.
Because of its massive success indie developers wanted to copy the formula created by Edmund McMillen.
Create a simple game with an engaging storyline and 100% replayability. While the TBOI copycats are games
that are good enough and are “original” enough, no one can deny that it stands alone as the supreme roguelike
game in the modern era.
A lot of us fans who need to go to work at 7 AM would squeeze in a run or two before getting breakfast. Who
could resist a Brimstone barrage on Monstro or a Book of Belial tear burst on those annoying spiders Yes, believe
me, I know how it feels.
But there is a new game about to be released that might pose as the first legitimate challenger for the roguelike
throne. The Wizard of Legend is a roguelike adventure game and essentially a TBOI clone that takes the genre
to a whole new level.
While TBOI focuses on items that you get during your run, The Wizard of Legend gives you control over which
items to bring before your run. You also get random items from bosses that you can use to enhance your abilities
(Relics) or you can buy them at the in-game store. There’s also a store that allows you to buy spells (Arcana) in
case you feel the need to change your strategy. But basically, your base items are the ones that you choose
before the run. Unlike TBOI where you’re dependent on treasure rooms and item drops.
We’ve all had runs in TBOI where the item combination is just downright depressing that all you can do is hit the
restart button or just let Isaac die. Well, in The Wizard of Legend you have full control over what base items you
will use.
There’s also progression on The Wizard of Legend. Once you’re able to buy a spell, you have it at your disposal
before the start of the run. Unlike in TBOI where you buy items during the run itself, here you only buy them once
and you have them forever.
The item combinations are great as well. While it’s not very sophisticated as TBOI, The Wizard of Legend focuses
more on elements Fire, Water, Lightning, Earth, and Air. The combinations of these elements and how they
enhance one or the other is one way of planning how your next run would be. You may also consider the unique
spells each element has and there are a lot of spell abilities in the game. These spell items will go hand in hand
with how you want your combos to work and how likely they'll succeed against the bosses of the game.
Like TBOI, each dungeon trap and enemy placement is unique. It is also extremely difficult to kill enemies and
bosses during your first few hours of gameplay. You have to master the enemies' move and attack patterns first
that way you can maximize your spells and combos.
Lastly, the feature that sets it apart from TBOI is that you can play versus mode with a friend or anyone for that
matter online. It’s much like Super Smash Brothers and Tekken and Marvel VS Capcom all rolled into one. You
duke it out against each other using the spells that you have on your collection.
So if you have a lot more Arcanas collected you get an unruly advantage over your foe. This is kind of annoying,
but it also makes you want to play more so you can have more spells at your disposal.
Overall I rate the game 4 out 5 stars. If you’re into the roguelike games craze then this one is definitely for you.
If you also like a bang for your buck game then this should be on your wish list. You get tons of content and
replayability all for the low price of $8.99.
