A highlight from my previous role was when I was tasked with designing and implementing an automatic order assignment and batching system. The company was a food delivery company and the objective of the task was to reduce the amount of time drivers spent looking for and delivering orders. I implemented a system that took several factors into consideration such as distance from the driver’s current location to the store (for picking up the order), the driver’s last seen (so we don’t waste time assigning orders to drivers who have been offline for too long and may not respond), number of ongoing orders a driver already has, and the delivery status of those orders (which ones have been picked up already but pending delivery, and which ones are still awaiting pickup, and the total time it would take to complete those in addition with the current order), and several other factors. Upon deployment, the system completely abolished the manual assignment system that was already in place, as it consistently selected the best driver for the job. Delivery times reduced by 25% as the implementation considerably reduced driver wait and travel times between the store and delivery location.
