Coming from a family of lawyers, I was drawn to studying law since I was young. Straight out of college, I immediately enrolled myself in law school.
I started working in the legal field during my second year in law school where I worked as a legal assistant for the Provincial Government of Davao de Oro, a local government unit, under the supervision of the Provincial Legal Officer. My duties involved the following:
- Reviewing draft ordinances and rendering legal opinions before being passed as local laws;
- Reviewing all documents from the thirteen (13) municipalities governed by the Provincial Government of Davao de Oro;
- Drafting and/or reviewing of legal documents where the Provincial Government is a party which includes, but is not limited to: Executive Orders, Memorandum of Agreements, Memorandum of Understanding, Letters, Deeds of Donation, Deeds of Sale and the like;
- Drafting private documents for notarization;
- Attending meetings whenever the Provincial Legal Officer is unavailable, usually with the Governor and other public officials concerning the affairs of the local State;
- Facilitating forums and seminars for proper implementation and interpretation of recent laws and jurisprudence for local officials.
After working for the Provincial Government, I worked for a private law firm composed of 4 lawyers, 3-4 legal assistants and 5 office staff. My duties involved the following:
-Drafting of court pleadings and legal documents for review of the senior partner.
-Filing of court pleadings before courts and quasi-judicial bodies.
-Drafting of private documents for notarization.
During my fourth (final) year in law school, I decided to focus on my studies and review for the bar exam. Luckily, I was able to pass the 2019 Philippine Bar Exam in my first try. I was then accepted as a junior associate for a firm in Tagum City.
During my first two years as a lawyer, I appeared and handled civil cases, particularly land conflict cases, criminal cases (rendered as pro-bono lawyer), and family-related suits such as legal separation and domestic violence. Aside from rendering the usual legal advice, I personally drafted private documents for our clients mainly contracts and deeds.
Lastly, I am a professor teaching Obligations & Contracts, Labor and Criminal Laws to college students and also teaching law students mainly civil law review subjects and legal ethics.
I am interested in exploring opportunities online where I can learn how the legal community works outside my country. And though I am a lawyer by profession, my passion for learning continues as I desire to continually improve myself professionally.
