Answer
Guy is mentoring 28 year old Stiopan.
Their passengers are often unprepared for the
experience.
Guy had to hand control over to Stiopan.
It’s a real concern when a passenger’s agitated.
If he lost control, he could assault one of them.
They decided to return to Biak and offload the
passenger.
Guy had called ahead so airport security would

LESSON 14
Making The Skies Safer + Past Perfect and 3rd Conditional
The Past Prefect and 3rd Conditional is not required to reach ICAO level 4, but if you aspire to be a
level 5 or 6, here is an introduction to the tenses and an opportunity to practice.
Past Perfect
Subject + had + past participle
•
•
I had never seen such a beautiful beach before I went to Kauai.
I did not have any money because I had lost my wallet.
Now complete the sentences
She _____ never __________ (fly) on an A380.
PET | WORK BOOK
69
They _______ not _____________ (experience) an emergency at the airport.
We _______ _________ (see) him earlier in the evening.
The plane ______ ________ (be) repaired.
The airport workers ____ ____________(clean) up the debris by the end of the evening.
3RD Conditional
We make the third conditional by using the past perfect after 'if' and then 'would have' and the past
participle in the second part of the sentence:
if + past perfect, ...would + have + past participle
It talks about the past. It's used to describe a situation that didn't happen, and to imagine the result
of this situation.
•
•
•
If she had studied, she would have passed the exam (but, really we know she didn't study
and so she didn't pass)
If I hadn't eaten so much, I wouldn't have felt sick (but I did eat a lot, and so I did feel sick).
If we had taken a taxi, we wouldn't have missed the plane
Sentence completion
Take a card and complete the sentence using the third Conditional.

_______________________________________________________________________
Your 4 words are essentially your brand – YOUR CORE 4
Your core 4 helps you decide what to wear; what body language to use; what words to say and your
tone of voice.
If you know your target perception, you can focus on them and always be going in the right direction.
The audience won’t remember everything you say, but it’ll remember its perception of you and how
you made them feel.
Creating the right perception greatly influences your success.
