Experience with Google Cloud, API Connect and Microservices
Prosenjit has been practicing API economy, IBM Cloud (earlier known as Bluemix), IBM Watson services on IBM Cloud and Microservices since late 2014.
Experience with API economy – From Q1 2015, Prosenjit got engaged in US Bank Sterling Partner Migration project. Though it was a Sterling Integrator engagement, but US Bank had opted a product called, Partner Engagement Manager (PEM) from IBM B2B Offerings which is a SaaS Product. It is used to Partner collaboration and process orchestration. PEM is heavily dependent on underline API economy. In this occasion US Bank had opted IBM Cloudant (noSQL DB) where Partner data used to get stored in JSON format. Prosenjit has designed the overall orchestration framework on PEM using APIs. These APIs were written on Cloudant itself using Javascript. Different operational nodes on PEM used to interact with Cloudant, calling APIs hosted on Cloudant. There were around 100+ APIs created in order to support the solution.
In early 2016, Prosenjit got engaged as Integration consultant for Teva pharmaceuticals PTPS project. As part of this engagement, Prosenjit had designed and delivered APIs built on IBM Integration Bus (IIB). These APIs used to interact with IBM Watson Health Cloud and other Java APIs hosted on-Prem. Defining APIs using Swagger, building the same using IIB, Deploying, Testing, Promotion to higher env, Troubleshooting were part of this engagement. There was 12+ different use cases which were catered through these APIs
Experience with IBM Cloud (Watson Services) – Prosenjit has started exploring Cloud Foundry, IBM Cloud (Bluemix) and its services (including Watson services) since early 2013. Having experience on API economy from different engagements enriched overall Cloud practice to great extent. Since mid of 2016 till Q1 2017, Prosenjit had explored Hybrid cloud integration domain significantly. For Amerisource Bergan Corporation (ABC), Prosenjit had built a solution for their future state OTC user experience using IBM Watson services on IBM Cloud. As part of the solution, IBM Watson services namely Watson Conversation Service, Speech to Text service and Personal Insight service were leveraged. A chat-bot using Watson Conversation service was deployed interacting with end customer, which was trained to receive and place orders. Along with this chat-bot, the same operation used to get performed using Watson Speech to Text service, where end customers would be able to place order over telephone instead of interacting with chat-bot. Watson Personal Insight service was leveraged to extract sentiments from this communication and would get used for future promotion of similar products to know set of customers. Orders placed using either chat-bot or telephone (SOE) used to get processed (mediation) and transferred to their on-prem order-processing system (SOR) through IBM Cloud Secure Gateway service and client. In this occasion, we had used IIB on-prem to create.
This solution was demonstrated to ABC VP in order to present IBM Watson capability with Hybrid Cloud in terms of building future state Order to Cash solution for Retail industries.
Experience with Microservice practice – Since Q1 2017, Prosenjit has got engaged with GBS Microservice service line in order to establish Microservice capability and practice. As part of this exercise, Prosenjit has contributed significantly on following technical and functional domains,
Building IBM GBS Microservice capability deck along with Senior CIC Leaders/Architects
Demonstration of Microservice features and functionalities on Kubernetes hosted on IBM Cloud. It includes,
1. Design and Development of APIs using Golang.
2. Designing, Building and Containerizing Spring boot, Golang codes following microservice principles, design patterns. Leveraging IBM Microservice Builder in order to expedite overall design build timeline.
3. Setup Kubernetes Cluster/Node and other associated artifacts.
4. Setup CI-CD pipeline using Jenkins/Maven/SonarQube hosted on Kubernetes.
5. Setup Mongo DB (No-SQL DB), RabitMQ on Kubernetes as part of the solution demonstrated.
6. Building Spring Cloud-Netflix OSS microservice framework features namely Discovery with Eureka, Circuit breaking with Hystrix and Turbine dashboard on Kubernetes.
7. Conducting Techtalk session with Service line
8. Building Microservice Estimation model
Affinity Assessment – In order to build microservice practice for any customer one the major asks is Affinity assessment. As part of this exercise, possible microservices are identified with domain context. Prosenjit has practiced in this domain with following opportunities,
1. Celgene Watson Patient Safety (WPS) – As part of this opportunity, IBM is going to build a product for Pharmacovigilance domain in collaboration with Celgene Corp using Cognitive (on Watson Health) and non-Cognitive (IIB/BPM/Java Microservice) solutions. Within this product one of the domain is De-duplication Search which helps to classify an adverse event as either new event or addition to existing event or duplicate event. This solution would search and extract series of events (similar) from Celgene’s current system. Prosenjit had worked with the team to identify microservices to be built lying in between WPS and Celgene’s current system. These Microservices would get invoked by WPS (IIB and BPM with UX), reach to Celgene’s current system and extract relevant events, rank them using custom algorithm and present them back on UX. These microservices are built using Spring boot using IBM liberty profile.
2. Amerisource Bergan Corporation (ABC) – In Q2 2017, ABC GBS leadership had planned to start building Microservice capability within the account. As part of the exercise, they had asked every individual team to prepare use case and possible assessment. Prosenjit got engaged in this exercise along with the ABC team from OTC domain. Prosenjit had identified one potential business domain covering Order placement, Order Processing, Payment which is currently catered by a monolithic solution built on Microsoft .net/Java. Post assessment following services are listed down,
Catalog
Order placement
Cart management
Payment
Order processing
Technologies used : Golang GRPC-ProBuf and Spring boot, Docker, Kubernetes, MySQL, IBM Cloud Secure Gateway, Oracle. Following Microservice patterns are used in order to build this solution,
Catalog – BFF (Backend for Frontend)
Order Management & Cart Management – Business microservice interacting with co-located DBs
Payment – Adapter microservice interacting with external payment gateway
Order processing - Adapter microservice interacting with On-Prem SOR though secure gateway.
3. A solution designed for a Drug Retailer Co. like Amerisource Bergan Corporation (ABC) - For a drug Retailer it is very important to get insight on all attributes namely Temperature/Humidity etc for a consignment (containing sensitive drugs) delivered by the Supplier.
Technology used –
An IoT device attached to consignments which will feed different attributes namely, Temperature/Humidity/Longitude and Latitude to IBM Cloud using MQTT.
On IBM Cloud a Node-Red application will listen to these feeds and takes following steps,
A set of data will be forwarded to Microservices running on Kubernetes - Microservices written using Golang (reading of Node-Red feeds microservice) and Spring Boot and deployed on Kubernetes. One application will accept the feed from Node-Red and update the same on Mongo DB using another Microservice dedicated for DB operations.
Another set of Data will be forwarded to on Prem application - An on-prem application will be running on Docker and receives the feed from Node-red over IBM Cloud Secure Gateway. Secure Gateway client also runs on Docker which build the connection between IBM Cloud and On-Prem n/w. Feed received by on-prem application used by on-prem SoR applications.
A node.js application deployed on Kubernetes as BFF MS (Backend for Front end Microservice). This application will read data from Mongo DB (updated b first MS) deployed on Kubernetes and plot co-ordinates on Google Map. It will help to project the route of the consignment on real time. It also shows different attributes which will be visible to the retailer.
Future extension - This application can be extended to a Blockchain N/W where all the stakeholders namely Supplier/Retailer/Banks/FDA etc can monitor attributes real time and take corrective measure wherever needed.
4. A solution designed for large telecommunication customer – For a large telecommunication customer, Prosenjit had engaged for establishing microservice practice building exercise along with existing team. We had selected their business domain covering internet pack selection followed by monitoring and activation of the same. As part of the affinity assessment exercise following services were identified,
Login from existing or new customer
Selection of internet service pack
Metadata management
Consumption by asynchronous consumers
Technical use case – Customer will login to the site and will be able to select preferred internet service they would like to purchase. Post selection necessary detail will be forwarded and stored in their on-cloud DB (post metadata update) for reporting. A set of data will be forwarded to a Queue for asynchronous consumption by different channels which will get reflected by the central logging infrastructure.
Based on the above use case and affinity assessment exercise following microservices were designed following different architectural pattern,
Login Page and Login Service with co-located Login DB – BFF & Business microservice
Metadata update & forwarding for asynchronous consumption – Business microservice using Golang.
An Asynchronous consumer – Adapter microservice
Technologies used are Node.js, Golang on Kubernetes, Mongo DB for storing records with metadata, RabitMQ for Queuing messages for asynchronous consumption, ELK (Elastic search-Logstash-Kibana) stack for central logging.

Project Profile:
BMW Group, the world’s leading premium manufacturer of automobiles and motorcycles, has deployed Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform to support its delivery of business applications and services. Almost all cars the BMW Group ships are delivered with BMW ConnectedDrive, the company’s digital product that connects the driver and vehicle with a range of services and apps, which is subject to large fluctuations in service requests. Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform enables the BMW Group to do point scaling to adjust loads to peaks and troughs in demand and to deliver the continuous service that today’s consumers expect.
This application was built and assembled reproducible container images from the existing monolithic application source and on top of supported OpenShift images, as well as OpenShift-provided templates for inclusion of both messaging and logging infrastructures. All the modules of the project represent an upstream consumer instance that communicates with all of the microservices via the API Gateway pattern implementation (gateway-service). It’s a graphical interface representing a Gateway where users can register or login, generate service request, then track service order histories through to completion. All communication with the Gateway is done through RESTful calls via Apache’s HttpClient.
