London Huayu Chinese Community Radio
Station Manager
Outline
I built a Chinese community radio station from the ground up. It was the only full time Chinese radio station
in the UK. As a self-starter I taught myself all the technology including the acoustics and even custom built
the computers myself. We completed a number of community outreach projects and broadcast 24/7 for a
number of years.
Key responsibilities
• Building and ensuring the day to day running of a community radio station
• Develop and nurture a positive relationship with the community and partner organisations
• Securing funding to cover overheads and project costs, and liaising with funders to ensure all
funding conditions are met
• Ensuring all station legal, safety and regulatory obligations are met, including insurance, staff costs,
statutory reporting requirements and content licensing
• Develop station programming and provide support and training to volunteers and paid staff.
Delegate responsibilities to volunteers and staff where appropriate
• Build online broadcasting platform, including website and live streaming functionality
• Look for opportunities to obtain an FM license and prepare license application
Highlights
Highlights included producing 2 seasons of ‘New Sounds of China’, which made it to No.7 in the USA PRX
charts, and ‘China IN’, a unique programme about Chinese Indie bands which was highly regarded and had
a very enthusiastic following. Our CD projects were quoted as one of the key ways migrants got access to
information in a research report. Our Media Literacy project was featured on the front cover of the
Community Media Association’s magazine, ‘Airflash’. Our FM license application was a monumental
effort and provided a useful document to the future direction of the station.
