Question one
Binet developed the traditional definition of the intelligence quotient by identifying the elements that were necessary to measure how intelligent an individual was. These factors included the mental age and chronological age. The relationship between the two kings of age was that children at the same chronological could solve similar problems. If a child at a given age was unable to solve problems that children in that age were able to, then the mental age of such child was lower than that of his/her age mates. Gardner's using the multiple intelligences theory that people can do several things and can create different products or serve their cultures in various capacities. It also explained that people possess the different knowledge and use them differently in different situations (Virnoche, 2008).
The Gardner’s theory could change the way one would view strengths and weaknesses because it helps to stop assessing a person’s capability on just a single time. When one fails or shows a weakness in one area, the person cannot be classified as not intelligent as he can, or she can be better in other sectors. Gardner’s ideas can significantly affect these evaluations since it creates appropriate assessments for a group of diverse people (Rice, 2013).
If I were to assign multiple intelligences to myself, I would designate the areas of logical/ mathematical, visual, and kinesthetic. I would choose these areas because I do well in elements that involve logic and numbers, have significant capability in controlling my bodily movements, and can operate objects skillfully. I also do well in the area of visual because I love drawings and pictures and interpret graphics.
The intelligence of verbal, environmental, kinesthetic, logical, and interpersonal are the most valued multiple intelligences by the society and schools. The reason for valuing these intelligences is that the school expects an individual the learner to be good with words and understand the verbal instructions, and relate to his/her natural surroundings. The schools also value an individual to be excellent in matters that require logic and reasoning, can excellently handle learning and other materials and skillfully communicate with others.
If work environments recognized multiple intelligences, the managers would change training and classroom activities to address the principles. The expected changes would include identifying the intelligence that each person possesses and then align the training to either enhance the existing knowledge or educate them on the intelligence that they did not have.
A good understanding of the multiple intelligences has changed how I view my abilities and the abilities of the family members and other people because I now know that if a person failed in one area, he would be excellent in other sectors.
Question 2
Through the means of learning about learning, I have discovered that I learn through different ways. The introduction to the various theories through which a learner acquires knowledge gave me vital information that helped me to do a personal evaluation of my learning approaches. I realized that I have learned through observation, conditioning, scaffolding and application of the previously formed schemas from previous experiences.
I found out that since our class there are several people from diverse backgrounds with different capabilities and a variety of learning styles. Despite the class receiving the same instructions and information from the professor, the difference in learning approaches will have the different class members score different marks at the end of the course. The difference even in the way people do their assignments or respond to class discussions depends on the learning methods that one uses.
If I were to act as an instructor, I would try to understand my learners’ variety of learning methods and determine the kind of information that they have previously acquired. I would then use different methods to pass information so that all learners can learn and connect the new information to their already received information so that the combination brings them new information.
I have observed that during the past five weeks I have been taking new knowledge from the class differently. Before this course, I would just study the new information and assume that is all I knew. However, recently I have been trying to see how I could the new knowledge relates to my previous one. This approach has helped me to perform well in the class.
The metacognitive experiences in this course have created an immense desire in me to have a better understanding of the learning process. The desire includes helping me to understand how I learn and what kind of learning theories effectively works for me. It would also help me to identify the best way through which I would efficiently share information with another person and ensure the information is retained for long.
I agree that the application of the elements of metacognition in my studies will help improve my capability to learn effectively. The principle will help a learner to concentrate on how they study, which is different from what they learn and then consider their education method (Velzen, 2015). These principles will help me to direct my learning by reflecting on my education in advance and settling on a program that will help me to learn effectively.
