Company:South African Revenue Services (SARS), Pretoria.
Period:December 2003 – May 2005
Position:Business Intelligence Analyst
Summary:
Worked on OPSBI project – Development of a DataWarehouse and DataMart for SARS Business Intelligence Activities:
Total Project Cost: R10million
This project was approved by SARS EXCO Committee in October 2003. The project aimed at developing a DataMart for SARS Operational activities, hence the name of the project was Operational Business Intelligence (OPSBI). It is envisaged that the DataMart developed would be used for Data Mining purpose
The project team members included SARS employees and outside consultants. A Project Manager from SARS Community was appointed to manage the project. Acted mostly as the assistant to the Project Manager during the duration of the project
The project team members came from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds and sometimes conflicts did occur among team members and l participated in ensuring that whenever conflicts occurred, they were immediately resolved by reconciliation and mediation to avoid disasters and project failure
The project used the Ralph Kimball Approach to implement the DataMart and it started with the Metadata Design to be used to populate the DataMart. Dimension and Fact Tables were identified to be populated from the Metadata. participated fully in the Metadata Design
The Dimension and Fact Tables were then populated by the team members that were assigned to do these tasks. populated one Dimension Table and ten Fact tables that were linked to this Dimension Table using ETL technologies available for the project. The resulting DataMart was fine-tuned and optimized by the Project DBA Consultant
Two Applications (SARAS & TBBAS) were written by the project Application Developers in C# to utilize the DataMart as an interface to provide easy access to the DataMart by the end users
Technologies:
The DataMart was stored in a Microsoft SQL Server with Windows 2003 Operating System. The Metadata was stored in a Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet. The ETL tools used to migrate data were Microsoft DTS and DataStage. The Applications on top of the DataMart were written in C# Programming Language. The Applications were Web-Based to provide access to many end users concurrently
Achievements:
Resolved conflicts among team members, Organizing project meetings when project manager was not available, Motivating Team members to complete tasks allocated to them in time and with high quality. Helping other team members to populate Dimension and Fact Tables
Worked on the Data Quality Project:
Total Project Cost: R55million
The Project was aimed to make available clean, uncorrupted data for Data analysis, Data Mining and Business Intelligence
This project was staffed by SARS employees as well as outside consultants.
Worked as a Data Quality Architect in this project
Involved in the migration of data as well data analysis before and after data cleansing
Technologies:
The Data Quality Server where clean data were stored was a Microsoft SQL Server and thereafter clean data were migrated to SARS Mainframe Storage. The ETL tool used was SAS ETL Studio, while DataFlux and BASE SAS were used to clean the data
Microsoft Excel was used to analyze the results obtained during the cleaning process, i.e. an analysis of un-cleaned (corrupted) data compared to clean (uncorrupted) data was undertaken
