THE TOURISM TRIPOD
Which amongst the three is the most important in the tourism industry:
Economy, Environment, or Community?
I believe that when the healthcare system of a country is damaged or was put in a
critical level, and so the tourism tripods are, which consists of the Economy,
Environment, and Community. It does not matter which side of the pod among the
three collapses, without a doubt, it will strike the tourism industry.
A tripod is a portable three-legged frame or stand, used as a platform for supporting the weight
and maintaining the stability of some other object. A tripod provides stability against downward forces
and horizontal forces and movements about horizontal axes. Putting it in the same ideology, these
three aspects of the country (economy, environment and community) can serve just like the legs of a
tripod. The three can be a platform for supporting the weight and maintaining the stability of Tourism
industry against forces and movements which may affect it. The combination of all three makes a
perfect balance in the tourism industry. Losing one leg could means having difficulties and or
Imbalance to which it holds. There is no greater leg among the three, the three holds the same
importance as it basically shares the same job, and overall goal –which is to ensure and support the
industry particularly the tourism industry.
Tourism industry plays a great role in the development of the world. This industry keeps a tight
correlation with the economic growth of the global economy while there are so many factors which
affect the tourism industry positively and negatively, which in the long run or short run affect the
global economy of the world negatively and p0ositively. Among these factors culture, peace, security,
developed infrastructure of the world, visa facilities, natural beautification, attitude of the people,
tourist number, Quarantine, World population, Education, Income level, Price level of different
commodities in the world, different languages and fare of hotel etc. are the well-known factors which
affect the tourism industry. This is where the three aspects will be seen.
Tourism industry is a volatile industry. It cannot stand alone without the help and support of other
industries. Having a good economy is significant for it is the economy that ensures the wellness and
state of its country and people. A good economy can be viewed as a nurturing mother to both
environment and communities. When the economy is in its state of abundance, developments from
different aspects of a country arises starting from emergence of different programs regarding
beautification of different areas, enhancements of different landmarks and even an increase in tourism
advertisements. Also, having a great economy produces good locales by means of supporting and
building projects and programs of which can transform the people into their more knowledgeable and
skilled selves. It is the economy that puts the communities into greater opportunities. That is why
economic growth is important. When there is an increased in national output it means households can
enjoy more goods and services. And for countries with significant levels of poverty, economic growth
can enable vastly improved living standards. When living standards improves, the country and
government officials can focus on the activities and programs that focuses on the development of
tourism.
The relationship between tourism and environment is of interdependence. The environment, by its
natural, cultural-historical, social climate potential, represents the motivation of tourists’ travels, while
a clean and unaltered environment cannot exist without practicing quality tourism. The more varied
and complex the natural resources, the more interesting they are for tourism, and the activities
generated by them are more valuable and more attractive.
The nature of interaction between local communities and tourism development is one of the core
elements for developing a tourism industry in a destination. Their active involvement is a big part in
the industry. Community participation is an important part of tourism development because it enables
multiple stakeholders to build strong political leadership and common consensus efforts to build
community participation which is beneficial to the industry. Their participation ranges from
involvement in the decision-making processes at the highest level down to economic involvement and
the promotion of the destination at the lowest level. They constitutes a relationship, established by the
members of the community, through their collaboration in achieving common goals and making the
community a better place in which to live. Community participation in conservation and tourism
development is essential for reviving destinations and for sustaining their development into the future.
In addition, the participation of local residents improves their sense of belonging, develops social
networks, and inculcates a greater appreciation and understanding for the value of the local area. Their
participation in heritage management can settle conflicts between the needs and interests of residents
between the pursuit of a better quality of life and economic development and conservation which will
also benefit not only the people and economy but also the environment.
Each one has its own significance on the tourism industry, thus these significance plays an important
role with each other. The presence of the three makes a country more beautiful and sustained than
ever. There is no point of comparing and choosing among the three because in regards of their
importance, they are all equal.
Explained above the importance and relation of the Economy, Environment, and Community to the
tourism industry. For the healthcare system, Good health is an important enabler of positive family
and community life. It enables people to participate in, and contribute to, society in different ways.
When a country has a poor healthcare system, its people become more fragile, more likely to become
non-effective for the workforce and resulting in more dependents. It not only slows progress in the
development of the industries and economy, but also blocks the environment within a country from
having the opportunities of being exposed and explored by people around the world. Poor and bad
healthcare systems remove attractiveness and beautification, as well as security to places of destination.
It stains the goodness and outweighs the benefits it offers to a country and tourism and hospitality.
