gave the establishment a huge boost in business, as well as other businesses, as proven by the
rise in occupancy since.
Given her reputation for networking, she was also contacted by other production companies to
assist with content suggestions for their productions in the Midlands, which she did in an
unpaid, advisory capacity due to her commitment to see business development in the region.

The Royal Tembe Development Foundation (NGO)
Space for Elephants (NGO)
2007 – 2010:
Marketing & PR Manager
Midlands Meander Association (MMA)
During her time as PR & Marketing Manager at the Midlands Meander Association (MMA), she
achieved over R11m worth of media and exposure value for the organisation in less than 18
months (stats received from Newsclip). This was due to her creating networks with media
houses and journalists, in addition to out the box campaigns. Nikki also raised R3m for the
MMA, given that her annual marketing budget at the time was so limited.
Nikki’s mandate was to `revive’ the dying Midlands Meander route. This was no easy task as
industry contacts had to be revived, stakeholders had to be convinced that the Meander was
not just a `white enclave’ and that it had immense value to add to the economy. With only
R60 000 per annum at her disposal to market the organisation, a lot of multi-tasking and
progressive thinking was required. Nikki’s task was also to increase the income streams and
build both the brand and increase its membership, which in less than 18 months she raised it
from 168 members to 220 members.
Her inventiveness given the restricted budgets, led her to come up with unusual campaigns and
events and pursued areas others thought impossible.
For example, through collaboration with South African Tourism, she employed a dance group
from the local township and branded them to do the 2010 DISKI dance all over KZN. The results
were phenomenal – the MMA Diski team danced to a total audience of over 44 000 in less than
9 months and were filmed & interviewed by various international television crews.
Nikki also managed to secure Google’s Street view and ensured that the Midlands Meander
Association was to be one of the first tourism routes to be covered in South Africa. She
personally mapped over 167 properties in 3 days with the Google Team, ensuring attention to
detail.
Recognizing too, that in order to boost tourism and attract increased spend into the area that
unless training interventions were put into place, the Meander would never be able to take
market share away from the `established’ icons of South Africa, such as the wine routes.
6
Nikki Tilley-Bower
To this end she engaged with Tourism Enterprise Partners (TEP) and managed to offer members
free service excellence and business management training, in addition to introducing them to
the available marketing rebates.
Another creative way of gaining attention for the Midlands Meander Association was to enter a
competition with Damon Beard to co-host his show for a week on East Coast Radio. This
culminated in Nikki winning the competition (through the audience voting on SMS) and giving
the Midlands Meander daily exposure for a week on ECR. This also included a mention about her
work when she was interviewed by Virgin Radio in Dubai.
Furthermore through her negotiating with South African Tourism (SAT), she secured over 20
key travel agents and tour operators into the Midlands for a fully sponsored Speed marketing
workshop, to give members the opportunity to showcase their unique selling points. This was
the last of their roadshows and at an increased cost to SAT.
Nikki raised funds from the National Lotteries Board (R3m) to assist the Midlands Meander
Association in marketing the region, celebrating its 25th year and also facilitated the filming 5 x 5
minute video clips showcasing the area’s diverse offerings, for broadcast on television, ships
and airplanes, as well as on YouTube. With the 25th birthday, a 3 day celebration event was put
together which included the first ever Literary Festival in the Midlands, art exhibitions and
having IDOLS winner Jason Hartman sing alongside the Philharmonic Orchestra.
Nikki worked with a very tight-knit team and reported to the Board monthly. She set up a
communications platform for the members and ran market-your-neighbour trips. Nikki wrote
extensive articles for the media and developed a media database.
Reason for leaving: Wanted to go on her own as a consultant and diversify client base.
2003 – 2007:
Head of Operations, Film & TV Unit, Monash SA, followed by
Directorship of Big Fish Digital School of Filmmaking and Little Pond
Productions
Nikki was headhunted to implement a vision of a new Film & TV Unit at Monash University as
Project Manager, which due to its growth in the first 3 years, and need to become an
independent S21, broke away to become the Big Fish School of Digital Filmmaking.
In less than 4 years, Nikki successfully grew the unit from inception (one desk and a chair) to a
highly acclaimed business unit, employing 17 full time staff and over 32 freelancers, and during
her time, trained over 1000 people from marginalized backgrounds.
Nikki was promoted to Head of Operations and became a Director of the breakaway companies
(Big Fish and Little Pond). Her responsibilities included business development, operations,
lobbying, networking, marketing, strategy, communications, publicity, project and logistics
management in order to ensure its sustainability and success.
7
Nikki Tilley-Bower
Working with various government funding bodies including Create SA, City of Jo’burg, Media,
Advertising, Printing, Packaging and Publishing Sector Educational Training Authority (MAPPP
Seta), Department of Arts and Culture (DAC), the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF)
and the National Lotteries Board (NLB), path breaking programmes were designed and
implemented with outstanding results – the participants experiencing up to 80% employment
rate. Nikki raised over R11m during this time.
Nikki was invited to advise the SGB – standards generating body for the Audio Visual Production
(AVP) sector, assisting with curricula design of learnerships and unit standards as no training of
this kind had been done in South Africa before. The ever growing need for audio visual content
as a way to create employment and market organisations has been her driving force.
The Film & TV Unit was recognized by the Department of Trade and Industry for its pioneering
work and as such, Nikki consulted to the dti on training incentives and rebates. The Big Fish
School of Digital Filmmaking is the only one of its kind in South Africa and has received countless
awards for its work, two of which include the prestigious Stevie Awards for Best CSI Project in
Africa and the Middle East and winner and for the best International Business Award, for Media
Affecting Change – Transformation and Democracy.
During this time, Nikki chaired and co-chaired several industry body organisations including the
Moving Pictures Training Association (MPTA) and the Training and Transformation Committee
for the South African Screen Federation (SASFED) and worked closely together with the National
Film and Video Foundation.
Reason for leaving: Relocated to KZN to look after terminally ill mom.
2002 – 2003:
Executive Director: Independent Producers Organisation (IPO)
IPO was a floundering organisation when Nikki was employed to increase the database of
membership and the organisation’s income. This she managed to do six fold within the first 6
months. Her role was also to position the IPO as a voice to be reckoned with when dealing with
broadcasters and ICASA.
Nikki attended Film Markets and Festivals as part of the critical networking and public relations
that needed to take place, and improved relations with M-Net, the NFVF (National Film and
Video Foundation) and the SABC where producers now had a cohesive industry body to work
with. Nikki worked closely with the National Executive Committee with Moeletsi Mbeki as Chair.
Reason for leaving: Headhunted by Dr Melanie Chait to start the film school, a much bigger
challenge.
1996 – 2002:
Tour & Event Manager: M-Net
Annual M-Net Summer Festivals. National tours – averaging 5 x beach venues per tour. Beach
events and profile filming of contestants. Live eventing and simultaneous broadcast.

I had the pleasure of working with Nikki during my time at Big Fish School of Digital Filmmaking,
where we outsourced her skills and talents to source new funding for the company, provide
creative idea generation for strategic procedures, think strategically about increasing our online
presence and contribute to our creative thinking processes. Nikki's key strength is her energy for
whatever project she is working on. She brings a fresh approach and a slightly different
perspective to the creative thinking process and once she has the bit between her teeth on
something that she is passionate about, her drive is unrivalled. Which brings me to her next
strength - her passion. Getting Nikki passionate about anything is really not difficult - she sees
the exciting in things that most of us dismiss as banal.
Nikki has a broad and varied skill-set that encompasses multi-media, film production, event
management, press engagement and writing of releases. I would be more than happy to work
with Nikki any time!

Not being marketing minded in any way whatsoever, set me on a path to find someone who
would assist me in marketing our business in exactly the right way. By this I mean, marketing it
so that it portrays exactly what we do, who we are, what our values are and with a high level of

integrity and professionalism, as well as achieving the results we are looking for.
Nikki Tilley came across our path and started working with us in 2009 and we have not had any
regrets.
The challenge thrown her way in marketing not only the Shan Cade - training / consulting side of
the business, but also the Brian Harmer - artist side of the business, was met with enthusiasm
and a great deal of unique and positive ideas, which has helped us become who we are today in
both sectors of the business.
Nikki's ability to continually come up with something new, her ability to tweak anything that we
put together "thoughts wise" and make it something to really take note of, leaves us constantly
amazed.
Not only is Nikki converse with the "old fashioned marketing ways" (which we have always
embraced), but she is modern, in touch and in tune with every form of marketing tool in this
modern day and age (which we have started to embrace) - no longer is modern technology and
modern ways of marketing a fearful things for us, but it has rather become an exciting journey
of "what and how" can we market better and better and better.
Recommending Nikki Tilley for handling ANY marketing challenge is a big privilege for us. All we
can say, in earnest is swop to Nikki today if you want professionalism, integrity, unique ideas,
consistency, dedication and results.

difference to the exposure of the Midlands Meander. Not an easy task because of limited
budget and because of the constraints of the management structure. I believe that Nikki worked
extremely well with the members.

Nikki is an energetic, result driven people person who is great at making connections, she is
genuinely warm and caring and she derives great pleasure from improving your company's
marketing exposure. I enjoyed working with Nikki and would not hesitate to use her services

Nikki Tilley-Bower
In less than two years, Nikki Tilly turned the Midlands Meander from a laid-back sleepy hollow
into a vibrant Association, promoting the Meander's arts and crafts and as a scenic tourist
destination. As well as admiring her marketing and organisational skills, most Meander
members loved her. We all voicefully groaned when she left us and we later saw our area slip
back to its previous overlooked state.

Nikki is the most excited and exciting person to work with, full of energy, commitment and
enthusiasm. The time I had the privilege to work with her, was filled with fun, laughter and lots
of exhausting hours submitting proposals, meeting with ngo's, government departments and
other tourist organisations. All our efforts bore fruit in one way or another. It felt like every
meeting spurned a new idea or angle which just had to be tackled. Nikki is a creative team
player who does not see obstacles, only challenges. With her background, knowledge and sheer
energy she is an asset to any organisation.
