CHANGEMAKERS RESETTLEMENT FORUM | VOLUNTEER DRIVER MENTOR
MAR 2020 – MAR 2021
The Open Road programme matches former refugees with volunteers who teach them how to
drive and help them work toward passing their Restricted Licence test. This aids their access to
securing employment, and their ability to live independently.
As a mentor I have a high level of responsibility and duty of care to my student.
While we are driving I am constantly assessing the situation to provide clear instructions, advice and
feedback, and intervene if required.
After our lessons I reflect both alone, and with my student, to adapt my approach – thus ensuring
they are getting the best out of their time with me.
