Within the framework of the Built Environment
Collective's work on urban upgrade and
conservation in Historic Cairo in collaboration with
Cairo Governorate and the Ministry of Antiquities, a
public garden was established in the
neighbourhood of al-Hattaba at the foot of the
Citadel near Dar al-MahfuzaT
The garden extends on both sides of the main steps
leading from Bab al-Wazir to al-Hattaba in a location
that used to be a garbage dump that residents
suffered from and complained about for YEARS.

UNDER THE MENTORSHIP OF:

Under the umbrella of the RealCityLab (RCL), the
collaboration project between the Habitat Unit TU
Berlin: Technische Universität Berlin, and the
Architecture Department, Faculty of Fine Arts,
Helwan University, and as part of 2019 activities, a
workshop was delivered and completed in Berlin
with the students from the Architecture
department, Faculty of Fine Arts.The workshop
titled: (Social infrastructures and the role of
architecture – Prinzessinnengarten Berlin
reinvented) took place in Berlin, 24th-28th of June
2019, it was led and delivered by Florian Koehl,
Fatkoehl architects and Omar Nagati, CLUSTER, the
project business partners. The workshop linked the
city and urban level with the architecture,
community and building experience. Furthermore,
the students were introduced to the concepts of
urban intervention and community garden.During
the workshop the students gained a great
experiences, and conducted an intensive designbuild exercise, and got exposed to real-site
construction issues and practical challenges such as
access, permits, safety and materials.The workshop
included many site visits as well.
