CHARITY:WATER
NON-PROFIT
BY MILLICENT TANDOH
Overview
Mission
Charity: water nonprofit organization bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in
developing nations.
History
During Scott Harrison’s two-year volunteer service in Liberia from 2005, he followed the root cause
of problems surrounding education, safety, and health to a lack of clean water and basic sanitation
systems. Therefore, he later established Charity: Water in 2006 to provide clean water to
developing countries. Harrison began to tap his network in an attempt to garner as much support
as possible for his cause. In 2015, Charity: Water partnered with Lokai, a silicone bracelet
company, to further support their organization.
Social Issue
▶There are 663 million people in
the developing world with little
access to poor drinking water,
and the dirty, polluted water also
makes them sick. Moreover, 1 in
10 people in our world doesn’t
have access to the most basic of
human needs.
▶ ▶ To be able to restore dignity and
health in women and children in
women and children.
▶ ▶To be able to cut off powers out
of women and children’s days as
their infection through water.
▶
WHY WATER?
In developing countries, access to clean
water can change everything.
The majority live in isolated rural areas and
spend hours every day walking to collect
water for their family. Not only does
walking for water keep children out of
school or take up time that parents could
be using to earn money, but the water
often carries diseases that can make
everyone sick. However, access to clean
water means education, income, and
health, especially for women and children.
Social Impact
▶
▶Has raised more than $74,000 for water
projects in more than 66,00 communities that
serve almost three hundred people across
the world.
▶
▶Clean water helps keep kids in school,
especially girls.
▶
▶Access to clean water and basic sanitation
can save around 16,000 lives every week.
▶
▶Access to clean water gives communities
more time to grow food, earn an income,
and go to school, all of which fight poverty.
▶
▶When a community gains access to water,
women and girls regain control over their
lives. They start businesses, improve their
homes, and take charge of their futures.
STORY TIME
▶
▶Hadjara learned about the
importance of handwashing
when the school first received
clean water. Then she went
home and taught her family
about it. Now, her family is
healthier than ever.
Social Innovation
Even though there are challenges of war
in some areas, Charity Water has been
able to supply water in refugee camps
and war-affected communities, for
instance, in Ethiopia, Rwanda, and
Malawi, among others, in
correspondence with water scarcity,
poverty, political stability, and strong
organizational partnerships.
Partners link sanitation and hygiene
training to the local Water Committee to
help ensure the continuous flow of water
in terms of care and maintenance.
Charity: Water has funded 24,537 water
projects, benefiting 7 million people
worldwide. They also worked with local
experts and community members to
identify the most sustainable solution in
each location, whether it was a well, a
piped system, a biosand filter, or a
rainwater harvesting system.
Recommendation For Improving
More education should be
done in communities on how
to keep the water pure and
maintain proper hygiene.
More sanitation projects
should be constructed such
as toilet facilities and
drainage facilities to
enhance good hygiene.
Can give funds to women to
start or expand their
businesses in order to stop
poverty
Water projects should be
safe and accessible to
children and adults.
Should established
agriculture projects in those
communities to improve their
health and opportunity for
others to develop their
potentials.
Improving health, education
and opportunity will make
women and children find
their dignity and freedom in
the society which begins with
access to clean water.
Recommendation For Scaling
More funds needed to
put in place to provide
water to remaining
communities with poor
access to clean water
and sanitation.
Donation of equipment,
and tools will be needed
to speed up the projects.
Cultural bridging is
required to make more
lands available for clean
water projects.
More volunteers are
required
More local leaders
should be engage in the
project to ensure
sustainable and
long-term projects.
