SOUL MACHINES
Startup specialising in artificial intelligence combined with facial CGI. My role
NOV 2016 > AUG 2018
was a Technical Artist Lead. I was there as the company was beginning and
had a good overview of the whole process of creating a digital human. It was
a varied role working within the art production team and occasionally helping
out with marketing.
A valuable skill I learned here is that repetitive digital tasks can be automated or
reduced in time. I was taught how to think different in my approach to completing
mammoth tasks in a fraction of the time. A 1-month task would be cut down to a few
days.
• Lightstage / scanner operation - directing and scanning of models and
actors to be used as reference to create 3D models.
• Photo processing - organising thousands of photos and video content
• Agisoft construction - reconstructing 3D scans of people built from photos
during the scanning session
• Caging - process involving mesh creation of hundreds of scans to be
converted into blend shapes for the final model
• Videography - performance capture of actors emotions
• Filming - Occasionally I'd help out the marketing team on video shoots
creating demo videos of our product
• Tracking / Solving - Performance capture of actors facial expressions
• Design - creating conceptual art for use case scenarios of our digital humans
• UI/UX design & implementation. My designs would eventually need to be
created for use in demos. This would involve a cross pollination of
photoshop, maya, after effects and working with the runtime data
• Concepting / Look development - designing new projects in photoshop or
after effects that would serve as a blueprint to follow for the final demo.
• Motion graphic demonstrations involving actors composited from green
screen footage interacting with how our tech might be in the future
• Training - my role involved training a number of junior members on our in
house software
• Setup / Packaging runtime data for client and demo deployment.

SOFTWARE
Over the years I’ve had to learn new software and skills depending on the
practises of the agency I worked with. This has been useful in that it’s taught
me a lot and it has given me the confidence that I can learn new tools fast. It’s
the thinking that counts and knowing the underlying principles that a lot of
tools have in common. Packages I generally use are:
• Photoshop (Retouching / Design)
• Illustrator (Design)
• After Effects (Motion Graphics)
• Cinema 4D & Maya (3D Modelling & Animation)
• Davinci Resolve, Premiere Pro (Video Editing)
• Nuke (Compositing)
• Wordpress (Web Development)
