I got my start in production in general with my church’s yearly Easter production. I would have initially been only a few years old and was merely part of the chorus in scenes that required large crowds. As I grew older I quickly realized that being on the stage was not for me. So I transitioned to helping out as a stagehand, only dawning a costume for the scene that involved live animals because someone needed to clean up their excrements. Going into high school I initially had a similar position of being a stagehand helping out wherever help was needed backstage. I was then given the opportunity to operate a spotlight since I had shown interest in the more technical side of theatre, and it wasn’t long before I was ‘promoted’ in a sense to operating the lights and/or sound. I served as the lighting operator and programmer throughout most of my high school career and the school even hired me to run AV for other events that took place on campus. One year I was even awarded the “Drama Student of the Year” award because I rebuilt our lighting show files from the ground up after they had been lost in an accident during rehearsal. Also in high school I took some filmmaking classes and was noted by the teacher to have a natural ability to conceptualize and deliver quality content, at which point I was hired to edit the footage of our drama productions so it could be sold as a DVD. During high school I also volunteered at my church as a handheld camera operator and was noted by the technical directors I worked under as being good at finding dynamic shots. Upon graduating I went to college at the University of Minnesota Duluth to study Theatre Arts with a minor in Film Studies. This gave me the opportunity to learn about and gain experience in a variety of production elements from lighting and sound setup and operation, to scenic design, and even costume construction; much of which was work done for actual shows we put on. Additionally, I was given the chance to make a number of short films in which I was solely responsible for the concept and execution, and my final short film won the popular vote for being the class's favourite. I have just recently graduated, and I am looking to make a successful career with my skills.
