From August 2008 to June 2009, I lived and studied in Fukuoka, Japan. After returning to San Diego State University, I took additional classes related to ESL instruction and I served as a lesson Facilitator at the American Language Institute where I learned new skills, most importantly, the value of communication and respect between peoples of different backgrounds.
Upon my graduation from SDSU in Fall 2011, I moved to Izunokuni-shi, Shizuoka-ken, Japan work as an elementary school ALT for Interac. After living in Shizuoka for a year, I returned to Fukuoka City to be a junior high ALT for the next two years. Following this, I worked at an Eikaiwa called Myer Japan where, in addition to Eikaiwa, taught prep for several exams such as TOEFL, IELTS, TEAP, and SAT. After my time at Myer Japan, I began working for Little America English School in Fukuoka, where I learned the value of incorporating experiential learning in language education. In the short-term I hope to work for a company that will allow me to work in an international environment here in Japan.
As a native speaker of English with a growing command of the Japanese language, and experience teaching and working with people of many different countries, I understand the importance communication holds in forging strong relationships among people of different backgrounds. I know that these skills make me a valuable commodity in an increasingly integrated world, especially post-COVID where remote work makes distance increasingly irrelevant.
