Business Card Size & Dimension Guide
The Standard Business Card Size
Business cards typically fit into the average wallet. That’s because they are designed with this
convenience in mind. This nimbleness allows for easy and convenient carriage. The exact size
of a standard business card in the US is 3.5 x 2.0 inches or 85 x 55 millimeters. But in the UK
and most European countries, business cards measure 3.3 x 2.1 inches, or 85 x 55 millimeters.
Business Card Shapes
Business cards are more commonly rectangular. But ingenious business owners sometimes
print on square business cards. While these square-shaped cards hold less content, they help
you get noticed and stand out from the competition. Rectangular business cards can measure 2
x 2 inches or 2.5 x 2.5 inches if you need to fit in more content.
Furthermore, rounding the edges of your business card can get your business needed attention.
Business owners who want to get noticed less intrusively prefer this more subtle design.
Business card printers can round the square and rectangular-shaped business cards alike.
You may also decide to create your bueinsss card in any shape and any size of your liking. This
gives you the opportunity to showcase your creativity and your business values in your bueisns
card.
Portrait or landscape?
Should your business cards be portrait or landscape? This decision is up to you and usually
depends on your personal preferences. But since landscape cards are more traditional, portrait
business cards tend to look modern and are associated with dynamic and creative industries
such as startups and design firms. The choice between a portrait and a landscape business
card may not look like much, but each option portrays a slightly different message.
Design Guidelines
Our online template library gives you business card templates you can work with to make your
designs. You don’t want any part of your card chopped off, so these templates have marked
bleed lines to ensure your content isn’t too close to the edges. Additionally, you can use these
free templates alongside our online design tool to create a truly unique business card.
Alternatively, you can use our blank template option as a size guide.
For effective card design, you want to note these printing terms and their meaning:
Bleed Area: .125 inches on all 4 sides
The bleed area refers to the edges of your card design. We trim off the bleed area, but they’re
essential. If your business card has a background color or design pattern, it should extend to the
bleed area. That way, you won't end up with colored business cards with annoying white
borders around them.
The Actual Size or Trim Area: 2 x 3.5 inches
As the name implies, this refers to the artwork cut line. The chopped-off part is the bleed area.
What is left over from the cut is the actual size of the card. While it's safe to print on this area,
ensure your content isn't too close to the edges, so your information doesn't look unattractive or
difficult to read. If you have essential information that can’t be left out, put it in the safety area.
The Safety Area: 1.75 x 3.25 inches
Important text or design element goes in here. This area is much smaller than the actual size.
Everything information in this area is kept sufficiently away from edges to ensure it is readable
and not trimmed.
Business Card Size in Pixels: 1050 x 600 pixels
If you use a design program to create your business card, the actual size of the card in pixels
will be 1050 x 600. But full bleed size is 1083 x 633 pixels, and the safety area is 975 x 525
pixels.
