What’s the Story of Angus and Julia Stone?
I am enjoying the music from Angus and Julia Stone as I write this article. I hope you too will find a new interest in Angus and Julia after reading this article.
Some Background on Angus and Julia
Angus Stone was born on April 27, 1986, and Julia Stone was born on April 13, 1984. Both siblings were born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia along with their older sister, Catherine, to parents Kim and John. Both of their parents influenced the Angus and Julia in music. They all grew up on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Angus and Julia both attended Newport Primary School and Barrenjoey High School. For you horoscope fans, out there, Angus’ Sun Sign is Sagittarius, and Julia’s is Aries. Just as many siblings, they have had a turbulent relationship.
After school, Angus became a labourer and learned to play guitar, while he recuperated from a snowboard accident. Julia taught the trumpet during this time.
The Personal and Musical Style
The duo have a personal style that is completely relaxed. He has a bushranger beard and hair to his shoulders, dresses in dirt bike t-shirts and baggie jeans. Julia wears her hair long and loose and enjoys her heart adorned dresses and sparkling gold shoes with bejeweled fingers.
At 19, Julia first learned to play the guitar while the Stone family was on holiday deep in the Amazon Forrest, when Angus gave her some lessons. The two still joke about it.
Angus and Julia’s musical style is their own combination Folk Rock and Indie Rock. Julia writes romantic confessional relationship songs, while Angus is a more guarded lyrically and more pop oriented song-writer.
Julia’s voice has a quiver to it that almost sounds like twill of a songbird, while Angus sings with a warm mellowness to it.
More About Their Music
Julia encouraged her brother to perform his music around 2005 at open mike gigs, and she sang backup vocals with him.
Angus’ first official gig was at the Coogee Bay Hotel on Sydney’s Coogee Beach, where he sang his first song called Tears. By that time, Julia was writing her own material, and they played split sets, each one singing backup for each other.
In 2006, Angus and Julia started collaborating as a duo. They wrote their own songs and worked together on structure and harmonies.
