Tips to Keep Skin Healthy During Rainy Days
The rains bring forth a plethora of problems that can wreak havoc on our skin. Higher levels of humidity can cause us to sweat. When our skin is damp, it becomes a veritable playground for fungi and microbes that can in turn give rise to skin irritation, rashes, and a variety of more serious skin diseases.
Certainly, no one wants their skin to be plagued by issues – not even seasonally. But what should you do to maintain good skin? Here are eight to-do tips to keep your skin at its best, even when the weather's wet and gloomy:
1. Stay well hydrated. Humidity causes us to release the moisture in our bodies, which can lead to pale and dull skin. Drinking plenty of water is an excellent way to flush out toxins. Well-hydrated bodies are healthier; water ensures that the skin remains glowing and supple, the way it should.
2. Eat Healthy. “You are what you eat.” Nourish your skin from the inside by choosing healthy and wholesome meals – fruit, vegetables, high-fiber grains and, yes, even good fats – which are pivotal to retaining moisture and repairing damaged skin.
3. Keep your skin clean. Cleanse, tone, and moisturize your skin 2-3 times a day. Wash to remove dirt and grime and any oils that can clog your pores; tone (preferably with a non-alcoholic toner) to maintain your skin's pH balance and bring a glow to the skin; use a water-based moisturizer both to keep your skin from drying out and to control oil secretion.
4. Use a reliable sunscreen with a good SPF. We often think that sunscreens are necessary only when it's bright and sunny out. Not so. Even on cloudy days, UV rays can do irreperable damage to unprotected skin.
5. Exfoliate regularly. Gently slough off your dead skin cells daily. Cleanse adequately to prevent bacterial invasion that can trigger breakouts, and avoid showering with hot water that can cause skin capilliaries to weaken, and can damage skin. Use soap-free cleansers or natural scrubs to help you better maintain skin moisture.
6. Let your feet breathe. Avoid closed footwear that can make your feet sweat, and thereby make them more prone to fungal and bacterial infections. Never walk in wet footwear or – especially if you're diabetic – go barefoot.
7. Special facial care. Avoid or limit your facials and do away with bleaching, as these can roughen skin during rains. Choose light waterproof makeup over heavier cream-based foundations. Avoid dark lipsticks and instead use milk cream to prevent lips from cracking.
8. Wear light, loose clothing. When it's humid, wear light and comfortable loose-fitting clothes. Always carry a spare set of dry clothes, and don't let moisture accumulate, especially in the joints of your body.
Your skin needs extra care during the rainy season because it is shedding, and therefore is much more sensitive. If you have itches or rashes, even if they seem mild to you, your best option is to consult a qualified professional immediately.
