Abstract
This project explores the critical role of eigenvalues and eigenvectors in the fields of linear algebra and ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The study delves into the theoretical foundations of these concepts, elucidating their mathematical properties and significance. By examining their applications, the project highlights how eigenvalues and eigenvectors facilitate the solutions of linear systems, transformations, and stability analysis in ODEs.
The investigation begins with a comprehensive review of the mathematical definitions and properties of eigenvalues and eigenvectors, followed by illustrative examples demonstrating their practical applications. In the realm of linear algebra, the project explores their utility in simplifying matrix operations, diagonalization, and in various transformations. In the context of ordinary differential equations, the focus shifts to their use in solving homogeneous systems, characterizing system behavior, and analyzing stability of equilibrium points.

Chapter 1: Preliminaries
Introduction:
Welcome to the gateway of mathematical discovery, where eigenvalues and eigenvectors serve as guiding stars in the vast expanse of linear algebra and differential equations, illuminating paths to understanding complex phenomena and unraveling hidden patterns.
Eigenvalues and eigenvectors, often regarded as the cornerstone of linear algebra and differential equations, unlock a world of profound insights into the behavior of complex systems and transformations.
The term “eigen” is the German word means “own”. So every matrix has its own value. The value it has is what we called the eigenvalue of the matrix. And every matrix has its own unique vector. That unique vector is that what we called eigenvector. For a given matrix A, there exist special vectors which refuses to stray from their paths. These vectors are called eigenvectors. An eigenvector of a linear transformation is a nonzero vector that changes by a scalar component. When that linear transformation is applied to it in linear algebra.
Linear Algebra:
One of the most important problems in mathematics is that of solving systems of linear equations. It turns out that such problems arise frequently in applications of mathematics in the physical sciences, social sciences, and engineering. Stated in its simplest terms, the world is not linear, but the only problems that we know how to solve are the linear ones. What this often means is that only recasting them as linear systems can solve non-linear problems. A comprehensive study of linear systems leads to a rich, formal structure to analytic geometry and solutions to 2x2 and 3x3 systems of linear equations learned in previous classes. It is exactly what the name suggests. Simply put, it is the algebra of systems of linear equations. While you could solve a system of, say, five linear equations involving five unknowns, it might not take a finite amount of time. With linear algebra we develop techniques to solve m linear equations and n unknowns, or show when no solution exists. We can even describe situations where an infinite number of solutions exist, and describe them geometrically. Linear algebra is the study of linear sets of equations and their transformation properties. Linear algebra, sometimes disguised as matrix theory, considers sets and functions, which preserve linear structure. In practice this includes a very wide portion of mathematics.
Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors in Linear Algebra:
Eigenvalues are special numbers associated with square matrices. When a matrix is multiplied by its corresponding eigenvector, the resulting vector is simply a scaled version of the original eigenvector. The scaling factor is the eigenvalue. Mathematically, if A is a square matrix and v is an eigenvector of A, then λ is an eigenvalue corresponding to v if: Av=λv Here, Av represents the action of the matrix A on the vector v.
Eigenvectors are non-zero vectors that remain in the same direction after being transformed by a matrix, only scaling in magnitude. Each eigenvalue of a matrix has a corresponding eigenvector.
Eigenvalues are associated with eigenvectors in Linear algebra. Both terms are used in the analysis of linear transformations. Eigenvalues are the special set of scalar values that is associated with the set of linear equations most probably in the matrix equations. The eigenvectors are also termed as characteristic roots. It is a non-zero vector that can be changed at most by its scalar factor after the application of linear transformations. And the corresponding factor which scales the eigenvectors is called an eigenvalue.
Eigenvalue Definition:
Eigenvalues are the special set of scalars associated with the system of linear equations. It is mostly used in matrix equations. ‘Eigen’ is a German word that means ‘proper’ or ‘characteristic’. Therefore, the term eigenvalue can be termed as characteristic value, characteristic root, proper values or latent roots as well. In simple words, the eigenvalue is a scalar that is used to transform the eigenvector. The basic equation is

The number or scalar value “λ” is an eigenvalue of A.
In Mathematics, an eigenvector corresponds to the real non-zero eigenvalues which point in the direction stretched by the transformation whereas eigenvalue is considered as a factor by which it is stretched. In case, if the eigenvalue is negative, the direction of the transformation is negative.
For every real matrix, there is an eigenvalue. Sometimes it might be complex. The existence of the eigenvalue for the complex matrices is equal to the fundamental theorem of algebra.
Eigenvectors:
Eigenvectors are the vectors (non-zero) that do not change the direction when any linear transformation is applied. It changes by only a scalar factor. In a brief, we can say, if A is a linear transformation from a vector space V and x is a vector in V, which is not a zero vector, then v is an eigenvector of A if A(X) is a scalar multiple of x.

Remember, not all the matrices have eigenvalues or eigenvector Matrices with complex eigenvalues or repeated eigenvalues may require special handling.

Eigenvalues of a Square Matrix
Suppose, An × n is a square matrix, then [A- λ I] is called an Eigen or characteristic matrix, which is an indefinite or undefined scalar. Where determinant of Eigen matrix can be written as, |A- λ I| and |A- λ I| = 0 is the Eigen equation or characteristics equation, where “I” is the identity matrix. The roots of an Eigen matrix are called Eigen roots.
Eigenvalues of a triangular matrix and diagonal matrix are equivalent to the elements on the principal diagonals. But eigenvalues of the scalar matrix are the scalar only.

Eigenvalues and eigenvectors, which are concepts from linear algebra, are applied in transportation engineering to analyze the behavior of transportation networks and develop optimization strategies. By representing transportation networks as graphs or matrices, engineers can use eigenvalue decomposition to understand the underlying patterns of traffic flow and identify opportunities for improvement.
