Kruger National Park
ABOUT KRUGER NATIONAL PARK
The largest game reserve in South Africa, the Kruger National Park is larger
than Israel. Nearly 2 million hectares of land that stretch for 352 kilometres
(20 000 square kilometres) from north to south along the Mozambique
border, is given over to an almost indescribable wildlife experience.
Certainly it ranks with the best in Africa and is the flagship of the country’s
national parks - rated as the ultimate safari experience.
WHAT TO DO WHILST IN THE KRUGER NATIONAL PARK
Game drives, bush walks, foot safaris, wilderness trails and even a
self-drive eco trail, are some of the ways in which to enjoy the magnificent
scenery and wildlife of the Kruger National Park.
WHERE TO STAY IN THE KRUGER PARK
In terms of the range of accommodation offered within Kruger, no national
park in the world quite lives up to the same level of service. The Kruger
National Park has a large number of rest camps, bushveld camps and
lodges and even some overnight hides, all run by South African National
Parks Board.
But it is the luxurious privately-run game lodges that steal the show when
staying in the Kruger National Park, as a trip is transformed into something
more like an experience - the pace of life slows to a leisurely tempo, your
every need is catered for, and extravagance is not spared. All this in the
wild heart of Africa - small wonder that the Kruger Park has the reputation
that it does.
THE GARDEN ROUTE
About the Garden Route
The Garden Route begins about four hours outside Cape Town, and
includes one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline, the starting point
of which is constantly contested as towns such as Witsand, Stilbaai and
Albertinia join the route that winds its way for some 200 km via George,
Wilderness, Sedgefield and Knysna on to Plettenberg Bay culminating in
the Tstisikamma Forest - a fairyland of giant trees, ferns and bird life.
Mountains crowd close to a shoreline dotted with beaches and bays, and
vividly coloured wild flowers delight the eye. Between Heidelberg and
Storms River, the Garden Route runs parallel to a coastline featuring lakes,
mountains, tall indigenous forests, amber -coloured rivers and golden
beaches.
Meandering trails are followed by hikers, the forests invite long, leisurely
drives, and the lakes and rivers lend themselves to swimming boating and
fishing. A wide range of leisure options, spectacular scenery and a mild
climate guarantee an unforgettable holiday experience when visiting the
Garden Route in South Africa.
GARDEN ROUTE WEATHER AND CLIMATE
The Garden Route region has a Mediterranean Maritime climate, with
moderately hot summers, and mild to chilly winters. It is one of the richest
rainfall areas in South Africa. Most of the rains occurs in the winter months,
brought on by the humid sea-winds from the Indian ocean.
Pilanesberg National Park
About Pilanesberg National Park
Are you short on time but want to see Africa's Big 5? Pilanesberg
National Park is home to prolific wildlife and a dazzling diversity of birds
about 2.5 hours away from Johannesburg and Pretoria. Easily
accessible from these major cities, it makes a great day trip or multi-day
stay. It's much smaller than massive Kruger National Park but as a
consequence, it has a higher concentration of game.
Pilanesberg lies in a transition zone, between the parched Kalahari
Desert and the rain-soaked lowveld, which means you can see a rich
variety of animals here. Besides most of the Big 5 (elephant, rhino,
leopard, lion, and buffalo), you have the chance to spot African wild dogs,
herds of zebra, the magnificent sable and roan antelope, giraffes, and
more than 350 species of birds.
Accommodation caters to different budgets. Choose from permanent
safari tents, self-catering units, bed and breakfasts, or luxury guest
lodges.
Best of all, this park is malaria free, making it a great choice for family
safaris.
