Interview and Assessment
Client: Dante
13 year old boy, history of living in group homes, and currently resides with Mr.
Bradford in a foster home. He has weekly visits with biological mother and sister.
Is considered “emotionally disturbed” and special needs. Emotionally disturbed
is defined as having a disability with learning not categorized by general
disabilities; explosive anger; inability to create or maintain relationships, and
occasionally other mental health issues such as anxiety or depression.
Dante has been given some creative license in his bedroom to make his own
space
Mr. Bradford follows strict rules with positive and negative consequences for
Dante’s actions along with a strict schedule.
I would like his school records to see where he is at with his education and
grades and a mental health assessment to see if he has any issues there.
Cultural Considerations
The biggest consideration for Dante
is that he is considered a special
needs child.
Dante needs someone who will be
patient with him, adhere to a strict
schedule and continue his foster
father’s rules for consequences for
both good and bad behavior.
Dante’s race will need to be
considered as well when speaking
with him, as well as his background
of living in group homes and now in
a foster home.
Referral of Services
Art Therapy
Art therapy has been held as a great form of therapy for
emotionally disturbed children. This can help Dante
express himself when he doesn’t have the words, and he
can learn how to control his anger through expressing
himself with art.
From the book, Using Art Therapy with Diverse Populations:
Crossing Cultures and Abilities, “The arts can transform our
lives: they can tell challenging and dark truths, resolve
conflict, bring communities together, and express what is
often inexpressible in words. We also know that art
therapy can be used to promote positive social change
and social justice. Art therapy aims to heal individuals and
groups and promote positive social change. For many, it
is in fact a form of coping with their world, a way to
understand the chaos of their minds and of the world
around them.”
Referral of Services
Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Columbus
Dante would get a big brother as a mentor, who would
spend just a few hours a month with him having lunch or
other activities. This would allow Dante to work on his
social skills and having a mentor to look up to.
Capital Kids Program
This is an after school program that combines after school
tutoring that will help Dante with any learning difficulties,
a nutritional snack, and other fun activities for both Dante
and his family to do together. This will aid him with his
studies and social skills.
Continuation of Case Management
Future case management
sessions:
Assign small homework assignments to Dante like writing in a journal or making a
vlog of his thoughts and feelings. Or using his creativity to make a card for his
foster father or biological family. We could also work on a plan for an activity he
can do with everyone he considers his family like a picnic. I want him to continue
to feel he is in control of his life and his success and that I am there to advocate
for him.
Continue to discuss his services to assess how much they are helping him with his
goals. If I find they are not successful, or he really does not like one of them, I’ll
look for an alternative, even if it’s just a different art therapist.
Discuss with Dante how he is feeling, if he thinks he’s making any improvements
and meeting his goals.
Continue with reinforcing positive behaviors and consequences for negative
actions so he has consistency.
