You can often break into the industry by offering your proofreading services at no charge to charities and nonprofit groups. Call or email the organization and tell them what you do and ask how you can help. Contact the group's marketing or public relations director, or the CEO if it's a smaller organization without a separate marketing department. Review the organization's website and other marketing materials and search for typos or other errors. Nonprofit groups are often limited in human and financial resources and may welcome an extra (and free of charge) helping hand. Even though you receive no pay, you can refer to this experience when applying for full-time positions.
