Kelvin Hayes | Academic Resumé LECTURER IN ENGLISH and INTER-CULTURAL COMMUNICATION FREELANCE WRITER, PHOTOGRAPHER AND DIGITAL PUBLISHER Introduction: I was born in Wales and raised in both New Zealand and the UK. Educated in the visual arts I turned to writing in the nineties, composing books and contributing to print and online media mainly in the field of travel and music. In addition I am a qualified TESOL teacher. I live and work globally. Professional and Personal Goals: I have been teaching English at both junior and tertiary level (bachelor) since 2011. I like teaching but I also like the variety that my creative skills and travel afford. Ideally I’d continue all of these in parallel. My passion in teaching is to imbue my students with knowledge not just in the English language but also in culture and creativity. I would like to focus on this as part of my regular pedagogic duties, aside the aforementioned media work and publishing projects when possible. A particular strength is working abroad both in academia and with other organisations. I would be happy if my work moves forward in this vein, particularly in regards to international collaboration e.g. ERASMUS. On a personal level, I love living in other territories whether it’s Europe, Asia or elsewhere. I am always open to possibilities; it’s part of what makes being a culturally minded creative and educator fascinating. Content Specialisation: Having taught English for five years now, in several countries, I believe I have gained familiarity in the four main areas as well as introduce elements of local and international versions of English, e.g. Regional British dialects, American, Australasian and Singaporean English. Intercultural Communications (covering four principal aspects of culture: THINK, MAKE, DO, SAY. The former outlines course overview, why I am teaching it, an intro as to what culture is and profiles significant cultural theorists, linguists and educators: Kluckhohn, Hofstede, Hall, Eno, Lewis and Robinson. These are supplemented by miniature country guides and aspects of western culture: architecture, books, design, food, movies, music, film/tv and sport. Oral English (particularly through questioning, student debates and by student presentations). Written English (via a series of exercises e.g. note writing, letter writing and informative documents e.g. academic writing, topic sentence, thesis statements, idioms among others). Reading English (guiding students in their pronunciation from books). Listening English (guiding students through tapes, video e.g. TED Talks, film and TV documentary). English for Design (showing how English works within the context of graphic design and branding). Presentation Skills (showing how spacing and punctuation work in English). Teaching Activities: The following are the teaching arrangements I am most familiar with, always as part of a full time academic contract: Classroom and Auditorium lecturer (both one-to-one and in group settings). Pastoral guidance (meeting individual students to discuss individual problems they may have). Educational consultant (assisting or advising students on courses of further study). Academic Skills: Curriculum Delivery: Pre-semester planning or scheduling Preparation of classes with lesson plans inc homework/deadlines Writing course syllabus and exams Communicating effectively with individuals from other cultures Delivering guest lectures for neighbouring disciplines, such as tourism, at request of colleagues Supervision Taking class register Assisting undergraduate students with their work during class Assessment Administration of exam database Marking duties for dissertations Working With Me: This year, I have been working as a foreign studies academic, and have been fortunate to be given a good degree of freedom to design the course I wanted, however I am just as happy working with a mentor. Having worked in both academia and media across continents I believe there is some value in having me on board as I possess a great deal of life experience. Being comfortable is important to me and hence maintaining a good atmosphere in the workplace is pivotal to function and success. I would describe myself as able to work in teams but I am also adept at working alone. The following are roles where I have felt most successful in the past, often held simultaneously: Full time academic staff member teaching hours vary per contract, plus preparation, assessment, research, and pastoral duties. Writing and modifying course semester programme. Author of many books of poetry and travelogue not to mention my blog where I write on anything from travel to synesthesia and occasionally social commentary and education. Freelance Journalist: Writing and Photography for print and online media. Language Ability: Although born in Wales, my mother tongue is English, however as much of my work has been based abroad I have picked up portions of French, Italian, Chinese and to a lesser extent Vietnamese and Polish. I wrote and honed existing course material for both semesters myself. For the culture course I devised nH/W (non-homework) and the nExam (non-exam) as a way to alleviate the stress of formal examinations and to offer my students another way of doing things; not just another load of homework to write or prepare a talk on but to think about. Classes 35-70 students. 08/2016 - 06/2017 Lecturer in English & Western Culture, South China Normal University, Guangzhou, China Teaching undergraduate students oral and written English, comprising lectures on western countries as well as culture (movies, music, food). Also touched on how the rules of English can be blurred when married to design and how this lends itself to letter and cv/resume writing. More traditional elements included modes of English, note writing, composition writing e.g. advantages and disadvantages of the internet, components of grammar, essays (narrative, argumentative), idioms and academic writing. I wrote the course material for both semesters myself with some supervision from my immediate mentor. 09/2015 - 06/2016 Lecturer in English & Western Culture, Xiangnan University, Chenzhou, China Teaching undergraduate students oral and written English, I taught my biggest classes here; up to 130 students! Course content similar to above. 09/2014 - 06/2015 Freelance English tutor, Various Schools, Taiwan Subbing mostly kindergarten and elementary students in some of the biggest English cram schools in Taiwan e.g. American Eagle, Joy and Kid Castle. 07/2013 – 08/2014 One to One English tutor, Linguatutor, Shenzhen, China Tutoring an adult oral English, from text book and on whiteboard in private premises. 12/2012 - 02/2013 English teacher, English Time, Istanbul, Turkey My first English teaching job was to teach teenagers and adults age 16 upwards oral English, from text book and explain things on the white board. 01/2011 - 10/2011 Professional Media Experience: Official Blog – Writer/Photographer My official web presence was initially a travel blog but grew to feature music analysis and reviews, synesthesia via the song lists project and other issues such as education. 2013 – to date GD Today/News GD – Writer/Photographer My blogs about Guangzhou and the surrounding province were syndicated to this local media group. 2017 Design Assembly – Writer Wrote an updated article on New Zealand record cover design for this outfit based in Auckland. 2013 China Daily – Writer/Photographer Wrote an article on Xiamen (which is twinned with cities in Wales and New Zealand). 2013 New Oriental – Designer/Writer/Photographer Wrote and designed the foreign staff guide for this famous language school. 2013 Oryx (Qatar Airways inflight magazine) – Writing Contributor Wrote an article on Bangkok’s Terminal 21 Shopping Mall. 2012 Fly Cardiff – Writer/Designer/Social Media Collaborative set up to save Wales one and only commercial airport, formed Facebook page and in my case wrote B2B and B2C literature as well as design the logo. Gained exposure in the Welsh media and resulted in the Welsh Assembly Government purchasing the airport. 2011 – 2013 Global Blue – Photographer Shot Istanbul Fashion Week for London based publisher. 2011 Time Out (Istanbul) – Writer Wrote a few articles, part of the 200 Things to do in Istanbul and Cool Cafes of Cihanger. 2011 M2 Magazine – Writer Wrote a number of articles for both the standard magazine and Tech edition. 2010 Record Collector – Writer Covered Norwegian band A-ha’s ‘evening with…’ event at Royal Albert Hall, London. 2008 RNIB (Royal National Institute for the Blind) – Editor/Designer My role at RNIB was two-fold; one part was designing a logo and subsequent marketing collateral for the SIDS visually impaired community group. The other was scanning, formatting and editing books for transcription into Braille using word and audio editing suite. 2007 – 2008 METRO – Picture Editor Temp staff cover for the Dublin edition of this free morning newsprint. 2006 RE:COVERED – Writer/Designer The original website for the above Design Assembly piece, wrote and researched it all during my time in Wellington, New Zealand.
