The right words can make the difference between a reader turning the page to the next article and a reader that can’t take their eyes of the page. Every parts of a text, from the word choice to the structure of a sentence, are crucial to the success of a written text, no matter what type of text it is.
Through my years of studies and the last few years working as a proofreader and editor of legal documents, I developed a profound respect for the nuances of writing. The grammatical structure of a sentence or the specific words chosen directly affect the way a reader understands and feels a text. I learned to play with those nuances and how to work closely with the text and writer to find the best approached for their subject.
I have a very detail-oriented way of working. I read every text with a critical eye, focusing not only on grammatical or spelling errors, but also on the comprehension. A text with no spelling error is not always a good one. The style and flow used are as important, if not more important, and these aspects are specific to a text. A style that worked for a text will not necessary work for the next one.
When it comes to writing, I believe everything starts with a good research. Knowing who the readers are, and what is the type of platform for which the text is for, are a good place to start. Furthermore, I believe that even when you have a good knowledge of the subject, it is always important to take the time to research the subject prior to writing as well as throughout the process. A writer needs to have a critical eye towards its writing and be able to understand that no one is all knowing.
The importance of having a personal approach and a unique voice is important, but writing is a humbling activity. No one is above rewriting and editing.
I am a very focus and driven person, and I believe that this translate in my writing. I give my all to what I do, and I am not afraid of being vulnerable. I do not believe perfection is possible and, more importantly, I believe that an honest and human voice provides a better chance of reaching a reader. Being an avid reader myself, I approach writing and editing as a way to touch someone else’s life and make a connection.
