Game Developer consultant for the Girl Move Foundation on the Mwarusi Project,
Beira, Mozambique
Given my hobbyist background in analog game design, I was hired by an educational
thin-thank - Veronica Torres Consulting - to join an international team in Mozambique
to develop an educational program aimed at vulnerable teenage girls. The Girl Move
NGO was awarded with the PEPFAR Dreams Innovation Challenge for its efforts in
supporting young girls to complete their formal education as the means to effectively
fight poverty and the AIDS epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa. This innovative approach
asked for an engaging method that enabled the girls to develop certain empowering
skills. We worked on site to develop smart games for the girls, incorporating the
established personal development methodology and the local realities and demands.
The games were coded into a structured method for a six-month extra-curricular
program. It was implemented in rural mozambican communities and is currently being
attended by hundreds of teenage girls.
