How to Add a Mechanism and Cap to your Clock
Installing a new clock mechanism can be a daunting process, but it is actually very easy if
you follow a few step-by-step instructions.
•
Firstly, you will have in your kit, the movement, a rubber washer, a brass washer, a
brass open nut, a brass smaller closed nut, your hands and a plastic cap cover for the
middle of the spool.
1. Place the rubber washer over the mechanisms threaded hand shaft and push the shaft
through the hole in the plastic cap (1). This washer ensures that your movement will not
slip and grips it to the back of the cap.
2. Put the brass washer (2) on the hand shaft and then the brass open nut (3); screw this on
until firm (you may want to use pliers to ensure a firm grip but do not over tighten). The
washer will cover the area around the hole in the cap., it will also add to the finished look of
the clock.
3. Screw the plastic cap (1) with the mechanism installed into the centre hole of the spool,
ensuring the cap is straight and the mechanisms battery compartment is at the bottom of
the hole.
4. Time for the hands. Firmly but gently push the hour hand (4) on first at 12.00. You may
need to slightly wiggle this down onto the hand shaft. Next do the same with the minute
hand (5) lining up the shape of the hole with the shape on the mechanism shaft.
5. Holding both hands in place screw on the brass smaller closed nut (6), ensuring it is not
cross threaded. Use pliers to tighten a quarter turn; do not over tighten! It may be an idea
at this stage to test the hands by gently moving them clockwise until they pass each other
to ensure that they are not conflicting with each other. If they are, gently bend the hands
away from each other.
6. Install your battery and your clock is ready to go!
