CHAPTER 1
Introduction
A WOMAN
A woman is someone who is mature enough on her ways, has enough confidence to face everyone everywhere even with her shortcomings . She is there to love and to show affection with the person she loves and does not forget important people in her life . A woman will not throw away even the worst happenings that the two of you go through and cherishes the best moments. She is a person you can talk to all day long without being bored because she is easy to get along with . she may be harsh and hurt you at times but that is to give you a piece of her mind. She may not be there at your side when you wanted to cry , but she is there with you in spirit crying and thinking how to make you smile. A woman is a person who is silent most of the time, but when she speaks up she will say every thing to clear up the clogs in your minds .She is the most wonderful person you can be with and will support you all the way as long she believes in what you can do. A woman is not a perfect creation by God, but has a wide understanding on how to deal with all issues .A woman is blesses with the power to instinctively know what behind someone’s thoughts, she is also blessed to go thought all the trials and temptations with flying colures. She is able to cry and laugh her heart out but still accept what she is.
A woman is not trying hard to be one nor trying to fit in, but always standing out to be a woman. She does not use people to make her way to the top, but always doing her best to exceed what is expected of her.
A woman- in both the Basic Oxford English Dictionary and The Macmillan Dictionary, the word ‘woman’ (plural women) is given as an ‘adult female person’. Also the word ‘woman’ is given in Hebrew as “-Ish – shah” (literally female man), woman wife. The adult woman female one beyond the age of puberty. “According to the Zondervan Publishing materials-Aid to Bible understanding (page 1664). From the beginning, the Bible makes it clear that women was made for man.
“The Lord God said , “ It is not good that the should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him”. (Genesis 2;18) KJV. Apostle Paul underline this when he says, ‘Neither was man created for woman but woman for man’.(1Corithians. 11:9)ESV and he goes on to make it clear that this divine purpose in woman’s creation in no way makes her an inferior being.” A woman is a God latest model from His Devine factory and created from referred material not from dust directly as man was. “And the rib which the Lord God had taken for man made he a woman and brought her into the man. “(Genesis 1:22)AKJV. This was after man had lived alone in the garden of Eden where God Had placed him, surrounded by all type of creatures except one that looks like him .It must have coasted God enough time to do the feasibility study and structural alignment for a creature fit for the man – a woman –“.Then the man said “This at last is bone of my bone flesh of my flesh, she shall be called women because she was taken out of man “, (Genesis 2:22-23)ESV when Adam so her he was flabbergasted. This was also Gods’ free decision on His part based not on anything outside His plan. It was with His full knowledge of the response and which respect the free choice of the person to whom He decided to make-‘A woman indeed’. Beautiful and wonderful made in the face and the image of God, fitted with special features second to none, to fit God’s intended purpose for a ‘womb-man’. A woman is the generation the world was waiting for to fit in a curved space as a complementary for the man. She became the mother (the female ancestor) of all human being. Her name Eve means ‘life’. The whole earth is waiting for the manifestation of the sons of God through a woman. She is power packed and set for dominion. “And God blessed them, and God said unto them be fruitful, and multiply and replenish the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the fowl of the air and over every living thing that moved upon the earth”. (Genesis 1:28)AKJV. They were free of sin and became good friends of God. Just as David O.Oyedopo, in his book Walking in Dominion rightly writes,
“When you become free from sin, you
Become the friend of God and you
Have access to all things the father
Has shown Jesus.”(page 159).
Therefore Adam and Eve lived a sinless life in the garden of Eden and God loved them so much and visited them daily to know their well being. Figuratively in many instances in the Bible, a woman is used is used symbolically to represent congregation of people. They are also employed to symbolize cities. Christ congregation is spoken as his ‘bride’ also called “The Holy City, New Jerusalem.(John 3:29, REV 21:2.)KJV.
However being a woman or wife, should not put one into a position of going against ones own conscience or causing her relationship to suffer. A woman in a righteous seed from a Righteous God, for it is only the maker who knows the use of what they have made,. She can equally be powerful and very useful anywhere. A good example of a woman power especial in leadership in the Bible is Deborah the prophetess, a wife, a mother and a judge in Israel. (Judge 4:4)KJV. The children of Israel came to her judgment under her palm tree between Ramah and Bethel. With passion and patience she succeeded as an all round leader and even helped her people to destroy their enemies. Even Barack then general recognized Deborah’s prowess and confessed to her that “If thou will go with me then I will go; but if though will not go with me, then I will not go” (Judges 4:8)KJV. Deborah rose to the challenge and faced the enemy squarely and defeated them. One more example of woman’s prowess in the Bible is Abigail the wife of Nabal ( 1st Samuel 25:3) NKJV, who stood up to defend her family from the wrath of David the anointed man of God. Nabal her husband was a non caring man, full of pride and greed, because of his riches. He was so much consumed in his self esteem that he cared less about any form of intimidation from any one. Sensing danger the woman, Abigail in her God given face the wisdom made hast and prepared to face the challenge to protect her family. The Bible says that, when Abigail so David she hurried and got down from the donkey and fell before David on her face and bowed to the ground. She fell at his face and said “On me alone my lord, be the guilt. Please let your servant speak in your ears and hear the words of your servants” (1ST Samuel 25:23-24)ESV. Humility is not stupidity says the experts and as Abigail continues with the elaborate plea to David, the matter was put to rest. She managed to avert David bloodshed revenge on her family, and peace prevailed there after.
While commending the efforts of our Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Mathai in 2016, the Norwegian Novel Peace committee in a statement wrote ,
“Wangari stood up courageously unbowed
Against the former oppression regime
In Kenya. Her unique form of action
Have contributed to drawing attention
To political oppression national and internationally.
She had served as an inspirational for many in the fight
For democratic rights and has especially encouraged women to
Better their situations.”
The 2016 Documentary innisaei. The power of intuition is dedicated to her memory. Wangari Maathai is a good example a champion for woman and human right in several. She was beacon of hope to those who understood her causes of reaction towards the oppressive forces anywhere. She spent her life fighting those causes and was recognize all over the world.
This is one of the feasters and strong woman who use their education power to fight for their right courses of life. She not was ambitious for her own life enhancement but for others and especial for the woman and generation to come.
One more example of woman in power here in Kenya is Hon. Martha Karua. A professional lawyer and Political Activist. Along serving member of parliament for her Gichugu constituency in the central province of Kenya. A minister of Justice and Constitution until resigning from that position in April 2009. She has consistently fought for the protection of women right and the improvement of women democratic process in the country. She is the current chairman her political party NARC-Kenya and has also stood out as a beacon of hope for many.
The list of such women honor is too long nationally and internationally and many women stars have shot out to be seen and recognized all over the world.
Example Margret Thatcher-The former Prime Minister of Britain, and Theresa May, the Present Prime Minister of Britain, Ellen Johnson Sir leaf Former President of Liberia, -Noble Peace Laureate and First African elected female President of Liberia, Fatuma Zarika, world boxing council Super bantamweight champion from Kenya.
The angel encourage Mary the mother of our Lord Jesus Christ “For nothing will be impossible with God”( Luke 1: 37) ESV. We can say the same to all women of God that this in world we can all things that we feel are impossible and make them possible with by our side. The keys of power to open all doors of progress, success and prosperity are available and any woman can use them without fear or favor, the choice is theirs.
CHAPTER 2
A woman in the Digo community.
The Digo community or tribe is a segment of the larger Mijikenda (9 tribes) found in the coast province of Kenya, East Africa. They are spread south of Mombasa town into the neighboring town of Tanga in Tanzania. The remining eight Mijikenda are the Rabai ,Jibana, Giriama, Duruma, Kambe, Ribe, Kauma and Chonyi. The Digo and Duruma are in Kwale District while the other seven tribe are spread in rest of the other Districts of Kilifi and Malindi. They all live along then Indian Ocean and fishing is one of their major economic activity. They are all Bantu and speak a similar language with a light difference in their dialect. However, they are able to communicate with each other without much struggle. Their life styles are similar except the Digos’ were later influenced by the Arabs who converted them to Islam religion, that helped to reject and eject Christianity out of Kwale District total. The Arab countries and especial Saud Arabia has some of the World’s tightest restriction on woman. It is the only country known to impose a ban on woman driving and its maintenance seem as a symbol of repression. However there is still room to push for law reforms for a change. Digo women do a tremendous amount of labor, but excluded from participating in politics, religion, kinship issues, and major economic transactions. Their culture generally regards women as childlike and irresponsible. Spirit possession sometimes occurs among the women. The Digo refer to the spirits in question as shaitani. The shaitani typically demands luxury items to make the patient well again. Despite the fact that men sometimes accuse women of faking the possessions in order to get luxury items, attention, and sympathy, they do generally regard spirit possession as genuine condition and view victims of it as being ill through no fault of their own. However, sometimes men suspect women of actively colluding with spirits in order to be possessed. The Digos lived in village and build rectangular homes with thatched coconut fronds and mud walls. The husband lived in separate round huts and were attended to by their wives. The Digos love traditional practices such as ‘animism’ ancestral worship and building of shrines called ‘Kayas’. ‘Animism is the belief that non human objects have spirits that are alive and can respond to the living. Blood sacrifices offered to appease the spirits are still very significant to them and witch doctors are regularly consulted even before one attends any hospital. Elders have supreme authority over these traditions and demanded to be given due respect and honor even in their absence. In this book Introduction to Africa Religion, John S.
Mbiti rightly wrote that – and I support him “The
Practice of making sacrifices and offerings is found all over Africa
By this practice of making sacrifices and offerings
Things are given to god and the spiritual being”.(page 63)
This confirm that most Africa Tribes or communities are rooted in cultures and traditions and in fact most of them are practicing them to date. (In praying and offering sacrifices).
In the earlier years of our grandmothers and mothers, a woman in the Digo community was the source of lively hood for the family. Her place was entirely in the kitchen preparing meals and attending to her children and husband. In most cases a woman was to be seen and not to be heard. She was always the first to wake up and the a last to sleep and only had time for herself after serving the others. The kitchen was a small shelter at the back of the house or sometimes one of the rooms in the main house would be set a side as a kitchen. Her fuel was firewood that she fetched from thickets and bushes around the village. She fetched water in pots that she expertly balanced on her head. Living together in villages helped the women because most of the work was done communally. A Digo woman was virtuous in her own way just like a virtuous woman of Proverbs 31, “An excellent wife who can find?, she is far more precious than jewels. The heart of her husband trust in her heart and he will have no lack or gain”. ( Proverbs 31:10-11) RSV .Sometimes babies were left in the care of older women or elder girls and sometimes a mother would carry the baby on her work as she worked. Her much involvement in work made the husband have enough time to join their male fork to while away, drinking the local brew and only waiting to be called when food was ready.
The Digo principal crop is ‘manioc ‘(manga) or ‘cassava’ in English. It is a small shrub with thick roots that look like potatoes sometimes they peeled it, dried it in the sun and pounded it to set flour for different uses.
A woman would go far in search of water because most of their area has no permanent rivers but seasonal streams that became alive during rainy season only. Being near the sea, the wells they sunk provided salt water not fit for drinking. Woman lived in their circles of homecoming, child bearing and child caring. Pregnant mothers were attended to by their local birth-attendants, who cared very well for them.
In comparison with the Kikuyu of central province of Kenya and who are Bantus, the Digo’s also practiced ‘clitorydectomy’ of girls and circumcision for boys. In this book facing Mt. Kenya, the founding father and the first president of Kenya, the late Hon. Mzee Jomo Kenyatta wrote;
“The Kikuyu name for this custom of rite de passage
From childhood to adulthood is ‘irua’ i.e circumcision
Of streaming the genital organs of both sexes”(page 129).
This practice was regarded as the very essence of an institution which has enormous education, social, moral and religion implication. However it was important for every girl or boy of the community to pass through it . This is become the real age group begin from the day of the physical operation or circumcision. The Digo’s call their practice “kudeka-Rika”. As a rite of passage. Although it was such a painful practice but to both the Kikuyu and Digo’s this tribal custom was one of the approved tribal qualification for marriage. It was a deciding factor to lifting a young man to the status of man hood and a young girl to womanhood. The girls were sometimes (after this rite) given in marriage to older men fit to be their grandfathers without complain. Polygamy especially among the Digo’s was prevalent as this would assure a man to acquire a big portion of land. Early and arranged marriages were encouraged and giving birth only stopped at menopause
In Kenya parliament passed and enacted a law on female genital mutilation the (clitorydectomy) Act in 2011, that outlawed the tradition. Women should disagree with the sentiment of Dr. Tatu Kamau, who has gone to High court and wants this practice ligalized –Her article appeared in the standard Newspaper, Friday copy of January 5, 2018 from Nairobi Kenya (page 3). Female genital mutilation is a retrogressive culture that should be outlawed. As a doctor Tatu Kamau should inform women of the positive side of FGM. The only reason give for legalizing it is for cultural aspect, nothing else and this is not convincing enough . In fact she should highlight the challenges that women undergo after the cut. Legalizing the cut in not a priority at all as they are other urgent issues concerning women that need urgent attention .
However, in the Bible God ordained ‘male circumcision only. “This is my covenant, which you shall keep between me and you and your offspring’s after you. Every male among you shall be circumcised is the flesh of your foreskin and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you”. (Genesis 17:10-11)ESV. Apostle Paul also explained the rightful circumcision is the new Testament that
“Circumcision is the keeping of the commandment of God “. (1st Corinthians’ 7:19) KJV. In another context , “But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is matter of the heart by the spirit , not by the later” (Romans 2:29)KJ
CHAPTER 3.
Changing times..
Urbanization and technology create unexpected opportunities for women
Our experts agreed that globalization and technology are helping to close the gender gap in employment and opportunities across the globe, sometimes in surprising ways.
For starters, jobs are moving to cities and in new forms that are more accessible for women. “Urbanization generally offers women the option to pursue a wider range of opportunities than is available in rural areas, “In addition, women can sometimes escape traditions that constrain life choices, such as early marriage, by going to the city for work.”
The IT–enabled services sector in kenya, provides direct employment to three million people and indirect employment to 10 million, many of them young women. It is also concentrated in cities, unlike the male-dominated manufacturing jobs.
“Because of the nature of the job—desk-bound, predictable hours on large well-controlled campuses—even conservative parents are supportive of these jobs for their daughters,
Technology and internet connectivity have opened up other options for women as well. “In a country where far less than 10 percent of the jobs are in the formal sector hence women’s chances of having a ‘regular jobs’ is very poor, so technology that enables them to start and sustain businesses without huge investments .The kenya government has set up an online marketplace , that enables small female entrepreneurs to connect directly with consumers.
Technology also allows for remote working, which expands women’s options eg soft loans.
In a country like Kenya with no organized day care and with increasing nuclear families, this enables a lot more educated white-collar women to participate in the workplace and not be forced to drop out on account of child-rearing.”For low-income women who work far from home, the declining cost of mobile phones means a cheaper lifeline to their children at home. Their use of the phone as a method of emotionally bonding with and monitoring the safety of their children is huge hence the use of m-pesa services
It is true to note that the women lived in a different era and their environment, food, practice and styles are not similar to today’s women. In most cases women were seen and not hard and lived a rotational life of home caring childbearing and childcare. Not anymore, because nowadays ICTs have revolutionized the provision of services by enabling women to access these services irrespective of where they live. This sector alone has made tremendous strides in the economy, because it creates formal and uniformly jobs. It is also a key driver of other sectors including banking, agriculture, education, health, security and communication. This sector remains a key source of women in innovation and especially in the areas of mobile money. They should be encouraged to take advantage of the choices of services available in the vibrant ICT market without undue pressure from any quarter. In some countries women are not highly regarded when joining heavy Transport and construction Industry. Coming up with a positive solution to shoddy service that have for a long time been norms is not easily accepted. In most cases it is difficult to change people’s perception especial where woman are concerned. But the Bible says that “So God created man in His own image in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them.( Genesis 1:27)AKJV. This is a mysterious chemistry which is in kindness provides more than deeds and although physical differently created the mental capabilities are the same we believe. It is an attitude, an expression, a look, a touch and anything that lifts the other. Women therefore have equal chances to change the standards even in industry. They can equally give quality products and deliver to the society. They can negotiate contracts and access them in the same level as men. Women entrepreneurs are now hawk eyed, alert and looking for same opportunities that were a challenge to them. They can now dream big and offer first class services and products and even treat their clients very well. In support of John Eureckson Tada with Steve Estles, A step further who wrote that,
“We were a kind of live a blackboard which
God draws lessons about Himself”(pg 64)
Women have a role to portray what God had already deposited in them. Chances are very open for them nowadays to choose good career guidelines for them to excel and enter into markets around them and even globally. They can now strive to take full charge of their lives and be put in the rightful places of authority without doubt. Again the Bible says that
“And they that be wise shall shine as the
brightness of the firmament as the stars
for ever”.(Daniel 12:3)KJV.
It is possible for women to shine because they bare educated, wise and strong enough to carry on their vision to higher and greater heights. They should refuse to allow their standards to be adjusted to the world’s norm because they ran a risk of being just like the world. They should be able to continuously believe that what they are able to do is honest and reliable, have set goals and visions for their careers and working towards affective business plans: for short terms long terms. In of support Larry Bucket in his book, Business by the book who wrote that
“A clearly defined vision or vision statement can
help you on course and serve as a benchmark
to help you evaluate all the opportunities that
pop up” (page 109).
It is quite significant that with a clear vision and mission, one is able to have a time table of events that follow in a sequence to help one achieve set goals in good timelines. One cannot achieve their goals all at once sometimes they need the ability to wait which is a test of maturity. In Christianity waiting requires patience and trust in the Lord, as it clearly say, “Trust in the Lord with all thin heart; and learn not unto thin own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He will direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6 ) KJV. In other words, if one trust in God then their plans, vision and mission will succeed. Achievements in matters of ,
innovations can be possible especially in the business hub and in the advancement of ICT use in various sectors, internally and internationally. This will help women propagate success and hit their set targets. They should avoid the wait and see attitude that might ember us them and deprive them of good business expansions. It is crystal clear that resilience has not matched the anticipated levels needed to have business stability and direct effect on the economy for woman. Sometimes they have to suffer and pass through a process to strengthen them. “More than that we rejoice in our sufferings knowing that suffering produces endurances and endurance produces character and character produces hope and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy spirit who has been given to us.”(Roman 5:3-5) ESV. This in line with what God wants His creation to be though people want Gods recourses mostly but not His time. The economic pillar has target that can sustain its growth and women should seek to create a cohesive and just success to enjoy equitable social development plans. They should seek to recognize their needs before rushing to venture into any meaningful process. I concur with Mary Millard, Tracing the Golden Thread who said that,
“Once we recognizing the need,
It is easier to adress…..it”(Page 130)
Sometimes women have so may aspiration but lack the ability to put them in order., They need to priories’ their needs and targets to sustain growth; and be able to succeed. For them to gain expertise and good career skills they need coaches and role models who have already succeed in those areas. They must be habitual adventures who believe that the future must be better today, by awakening there resolve to find ways of tackling any obstacle ahead of them. They must realize better performances through gender equality and empowerment in education by enhancing their enrolment of more girls schools. They should be ready to support any imitation to bring their resolve on board. If you are the reason for the joy of someone else you will never become a victim of sorrow, goes the saying. Social Media is one of the greatest invention of all time, and is a network of platform that connects people globally . It has such a great impact on development and women can use it to gain fame and popularity. Honestly hard work, good vision and the desire to drive change can remain resolute for the quest to succeed.
CHAPTER 4.
A woman is not a sex object.
In the Webster Dictionary the word ‘sex’ is given as;
1. Either of the division of organism distinguished as male or female (especially men or women) collectively.
2. The character of leaving male or female; all of the things which distinguish a male or female .
3. Anything connected with sexual gratification or reproduction or the urge for these especially the attraction of individuals of one sex those of the other
The fact that a woman was created as ‘womb-man’ or ‘helpmate’ (Genesis 2:18) NkJV, does not make her an object of any form of sex abuse. The explanation given above make it clear that it is the attraction from the urge of sex of individuals of one sex for those of the other, male and female. This means that there must be a mutual agreement for the two (grown up male and female) to come together and satisfy each other urge for sex. It does not put one above the other. I sincerely agree with what Donald Coggan wrote in is book Sure foundation that,
“when I use the phrase’ the trivialization of the sexually’
i do so out of caution that sex is to be regarded as gift
of immense value and joy, to be treated with responsibility
And reverence”. (page 85)
Sex driven and perhaps the most difficult things to understand is that God is in sovereign control of everything we choose to do, even our sexually lives. If we live in the will of God, then sex will not be misused for other ulterior motives other than that of our maker. God ordained sex in the Bible after He had made the woman. “And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed’.(Genesis 2:25)ESV. Let it be noted hear that they were only two of that type and even today in this world they remain two. The union remain a mutual understanding and an agreement between them. They can let their own ruler on how to conduct sex without the interference of other people, set their timeline and dates if they so wish. This mutual agreement should not be abused to favor one over the other. One good thing that God gave His good creature is ‘free will’. This is a power that every individual are to make choices as they remember the core purpose and to be cautiously aware of any repucation. They should emotionally try to respond to the good experiences instead of disrupting them. Sex was meant for enjoyment and satisfaction and the results are fruits of the womb. Free choice is an undesirable good, and those who mess up and above power deny its’ existence. If God made free creatures, and if it is good to be free then the origin of evil and miss-use of sex is the misuse of freedom. I support what Dr. Norman Geisler in his book Chosen but free, who wrote that,
“Morally speaking, irresistible urges are
urges that have not been resisted. People
have died for lack of water and food but
no one has ever been known to die for
lack of sex, alcohol or other drugs to
fulfill his cravings!”.(Page 27).
One wonders why women should use their sexual values to fulfill other peoples urges for sex and even use it as a business career to sustain lively hood. Being termed as ‘weaker sex’ does not qualify women to be used as sex objects. This has made them loose value as they have been seen as mare ‘sex objects’ and have lost many opportunities in life. Sexual favours have made women panic in some cases especially where there are job opportunities and have misused sex for wrong motives. This should be discouraged by all and sundry, so that they can gain back their respect and honor. It is usually in offices where sex abuse is more prevalent than anywhere else. Great fully, women are now able to use Social Media i.e Twitter, What’s up, Instagram, Facebook, Imo, etc, which is a great privilege to them to be able to fight for their causes.
Here in Kenya, growing up in the Era of former President Daniel Arap Moi, meeting him for the closest was by the roadside waving the Kenya flag and dancing in the scorching sun, as he took a brief stop in his entourage to say ‘helo’ to the people. Not any more because nowadays one can tweet or send a test message (sms) to His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta, the President of the Republic of Kenya and be able to communicate with him. Direct access to the president in the epitome!
Fortunately so , women can now also use the Social Media pages to raise objective politic concern over issues like health care, security, economic or sports matters and take meaningful action by aggravating their concern to the people who can do something about it. They can also make social Media enjoyable and use a good laugh albeit not to the expense of others. They can be the most effective national teachers who can teach and preach peace to the people. They have room to work out system to make them behave in a manner representing the real objective needs of their fork.
It is normally difficult to change peoples perception especially where women are concerned. However the storm has passed away and women have a chance to change the standard industry for better achievements. They can also give quality products and deliver to the society, negotiate contracts and access them in the same level as men instead of being used to advertise products for others. Alf LOHNE in his book Tomorrow begins today wrote that,
“A quick look at theatre advertisements and the covers
of popular magazines paper bags tittles and illustrations and bill
boards is more than sufficient to underscore this fact.
The more or less unclothed female advertise bikini,
swim suits and ladies underwear’s. The experts
seem to agree that this is the best way to promote
the sales of cars, holidays, bathroom furniture’s,
lawn mowers, boats and thousands of others things!”(page 89).
Women were not created to be puppets, but were given dignity to choose to respond of their own will. The experts are wrong in their assertion that by using nude women only in advertisement their sales get attraction. There are so many other honorable ways of advertising commodities in favor of woman’s respect and honor. The Biblically derived view is that men and women complement each other and posses equal dignity and Gods worth as the image of God. They are called to different rules in life that glorify their maker.
CHAPTER 5.
Women empowerment,
Innovation the best way to go.
Women need to embrace Innovation and Technology in order for them to be competitive and strong in society. The world we are living in today is on the verge of the fourth Industrial revolution, because all the earlier revolutions from the beginning, were based on commodities, be it water, steam or electricity(electronics) it is now a different ball game and the goal posts are changed. It is a digital Revolution enclosed and set on Decommodisation of economies. Due to its disruptive nature, it is not the extension of the information Technology revolution. This digital revolution is an ecosystem where the worlds largest Tax company does not own a single car, but by just using an app and drones guided by artificial intelligence, are used for parcel and human deliveries and transport. It is a knowledge based economy which puts a premium on the skills of the innovators and the owners of Capital. For woman to reap maximum benefits, innovation should be used as a ladder for them to grow. It is estimated that 35 percent of the current professionals will be gone by 2035, either because humans will be replaced by machines, algorithms and robots or their skills will no longer be required. This will exacerbate class inequalities as the economic gap between the digitally skilled and the unskilled windows will widen and this is bad for prosperity. Women must strive to fill the gap by embracing education and technology fully. They should just put more emphasis on the male dominated areas on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education. Although this will be horny bulwark against digital disruption as it will bridge the skills demand and supply gap in the labor market. Noticeably, there is now an emerging field such as big data analytics, robots, artificial intelligent and internet of things, virtual-mixed reality and genome editing, which are all STEM based.
Things have moved forward while in the past 20th century was solely a commodity century, particularly oil, in the 21st century ‘Data’ is the new oil. It is clearly coincidental that the worlds five most valuable companies – Alphabet (Google parent company) Amazon, Apple, Faecbook and Microsoft- all have embraced Data as one of their core-business.
Therefore, quality STEM education will not only make women ready for changing work environment caused by instrumental issues of poverty, climate change mitigation and resilient communities of women. As the global business trends move away from brick and mortar stores through poverty reduction and woman empowerment, milestone can be achieved by harnessing e-commerce platform for them.(The Bible is clear as written “ I know how to be brought low and know how to abound. In any and every circumstance...” (Philippians 4:12-13)
Stigma.
For quite a period of time now, women innovators and Entrepreneurs have faced physical infrastructure as high barriers to market entry blocks them. Thaks to innovation, these barriers can be brought down if women are ready to stand up and face these challenges without fear. Through clean energy which is affordable and available, women can be effective all areas of society. Technologies such as Smart grid, solar and thermal energy, conversion and battery technologies are an opportunity to improve energy securities for women to move forward.
A country like Kenya, agriculture is the primary economy especially for the woman. Infact women are the majority small scale formers but producing just enough for their daily consumption. If they can be supported they can realize food security by enhancing their productivity. Reliance on rain fed agriculture has led to unprecedented food insecurity making the government to send Relief Food to parts of the country dented by poor weather conditions. Forward thinking through irrigation, drought resistant strains and breeding Technology they can realize food sufficiency and feed even their Nations. A young vibrant and innovative women population is an asset for prosperity and Kenya is lucky to have them. In fact it is imperative for the country to realize Vision 2030, only and when women are provided with the right Science, technology and innovative policies. Another stigma is by women themselves, because they are enemies of themselves. The question is why do women regularly throw untruths and other hind of stinking cow dung at each other? The most problem answer is that they never gave it too much thought. It is especially those women in high places that know the lower women educationally are e
qually deficient of the official language.
This is due to their low education standards that makes them not able to defend their courses- once beaten twice shy goes the saying- They cannot feel compelled to utter aloud any complaint about the so called “Educated women”.
However women have room to work out systems to make them become more effective in society and get out of stigma. The benefits of product innovation and personalization are extensive and allow women to be more flexible and be able to respond to changing lives.
Women's empowerment
Women's empowerment has become a significant topic of discussion in development and economics. It can also point to the approaches regarding other trivialized genders in a particular political or social context here in kenya and in the world at large.
Women's economic empowerment refers to the ability for women to enjoy their right to control and benefit from resources, assets, income and their own time, as well as the ability to manage risk and improve their economic status and well being.
While often interchangeably used, the more comprehensive concept of gender empowerment refers to people of any gender, stressing the distinction between biological and gender as a role. It thereby also refers to other marginalized genders in a particular political or social context.
Ways in which help to empower women
Land rights offer a key way to economically empower women, giving them the confidence they need to tackle gender inequalities. Often, women in africa especially in keny and underdeveloped nations are legally restricted from their land own the sole basis of gender. Having a right to their land gives women a sort of bargaining power that they wouldn't normally have; in turn, they gain the ability to assert themselves in various aspects of their life, both in and outside of the home. In rural areas, women are not at all supported for education by their parents.

[v] . Margaret Kamar
Professor Margaret Kamar is a well-known household name in Kenya, mainly because of her political career. She was married to Nicholas Biwott., another wealthy Kenyan politician
it is a way for others to see them as equal members of society. Through this, they achieve more self-respect and confidence by their contributions to their communities. Simply including women as a part of a community can have sweeping positive effects. In our luhya women were given a place in a forest conservation group. This drove up the efficiency of the group, and the women gained self-esteem while others, including men, viewed them with more respect.
Women participation, can be seen and gained in a variety of ways, has been argued to be the most beneficial form of gender empowerment. Political participation, be it the ability to vote and voice opinions, or the ability to run for office with a fair chance of being elected, plays a huge role in the empowerment of women here in kenya, However, participation is not limited to the realm of politics. It can include participation in the household, in schools, and the ability to make choices for oneself. It can be said that this latter participation need to be achieved before one can move onto broader political participation.[ When women have the agency to do what they want, a higher equality between men and women is established.
It is argued that microcredit also offers a way to provide empowerment for women. There are many Governments, organizations, and individuals which support women financially. They hope that lending money and credit allows women to function in business and society, which in turn empowers them to do more in their communities. One of the primary goals in the foundation of microfinance was women empowerment. Loans with low interest rates are given to women in developing communities in hopes that they can start a small business and provide for their families. It should be said, however, that the success and efficiency of microcredit and microloans is controversial and constantly debated.
The role of education
Improving education for women helps raise their levels of health and nutrition and reduces fertility rates Education increases "people's self- confidence and enables them to find better jobs, engage in public debate and make demands on government for health care, social security and other entitlements In particular, education empowers women to make choices that improve their own and their children's health and chances of survival. Education helps to prevent and contain disease, and is an essential element of efforts to reduce malnutrition. Further, education empowers women to make choices that improve their welfare, including marrying later and having fewer children. Crucially, education also increases women's awareness of their human rights their confidence and their actual ability to assert those rights.
Despite significant improvements in recent decades, education is not universally available and gender inequalities persist. A major concern in many countries is not only limited numbers of girls going to school, but also limited educational pathways for those that step into the classroom. This includes, more specifically, how to address the lower participation and learning achievement of girl child.
The Internet as a tool of empowerment
The growing access of the web in the late 20th century has allowed women to empower themselves by using various tools on the Internet. With the introduction of the World Wide Web, women have begun to use social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter for online activism.Through online activism, women are able to empower themselves by organizing campaigns and voicing their opinions for equality rights without feeling oppressed by members of society. For example, on May 29, 2013, an online campaign started by 100 female advocates forced the leading social networking website, Facebook, to take down various pages that spread hatred about women.
In recent years, blogging has also become a powerful tool for the educational empowerment of women. According to a study done by the University of California, Los Angeles, medical patients who read and write about their disease are often in a much happier mood and more knowledgeable than those who do not.] By reading others' experiences, patients can better educate themselves and apply strategies that their fellow bloggers suggest.
With the easy accessibility and affordability of e-learning (electronic learning), women can now study from the comfort of their homes. By empowering themselves educationally through new technologies like e-learning, women are also learning new skills that will come in handy in today's advancing globalized world.
Barriers
Many of the barriers to women's empowerment and equity lie ingrained in cultural norms. Many women feel these pressures, while others have become accustomed to being treated inferior to men. Even if men, legislators, NGOs, etc. are aware of the benefits women's empowerment and participation can have, many are scared of disrupting the status quo and continue to let societal norms get in the way of development
Research shows that the increasing access to the internet can also result in an increased exploitation of women. Releasing personal information on websites has put some women's personal safety at risk. In 2010, Working to Halt Online Abuse stated that 73% of women were victimized through such sites. Types of victimization include cyber stalking, harassment, online pornography, and flaming. Sexual harassment in particular is a large barrier for women in the workplace. It appears in almost all industries, but is most notable in the following: business, trade, banking and finance, sales and marketing, hospitality, civil service, and education, lecturing and teaching. According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), sexual harassment is a clear form of gender discrimination based on sex, a manifestation of unequal power relations between men and women. Furthermore, the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) is urging for increased measures of protection for women against sexual harassment and violence in the workplace. 54% (272) had experienced some form of workplace sexual harassment. 79% of the victims are women; 21% were men.
Recent studies also show that women face more barriers in the workplace than do men. Gender-related barriers involve sexual harassment, unfair hiring practices, career progression, and unequal pay where women are paid less than men are for performing the same job. When taking the median earnings of men and women who worked full-time, year-round, government data from 2014 showed that women made $0.79 for every dollar a man earned. The average earnings for working mothers came out to even less—$0.71 for every dollar a father made, according to a 2014 study conducted by the National Partnership for Women and Children. While much of the public discussion of the "wage gap" has focused around women getting equal pay for the same work as their male peers, many women struggle with what is called the "pregnancy penalty". The main problem is that it is difficult to measure, but some experts say that the possibility of having a baby can be enough for employers to push women back from their line. Therefore, women are put in a position where they need to make the decision of whether to maintain in the workforce or have children. This problem has sparked the debate over maternity leave in the United States.
However, despite the struggle for equal pay in the United States, the tech industry has made progress in helping to encourage equal pay across gender. In March 2016, tech career website Dice released a study of more than 16,000 tech professionals that found that when you compare equivalent education, experience and position, there is no pay gap—and hasn't been for the last six years This new industry is paving a way for other companies to do the same. However, this industry also struggles to employ women in executive positions. This is partially due to the barrier of sexual harassment and pregnancy that was aforementioned.
Such barriers make it difficult for women to advance in their workplace or receive fair compensation for the work they provide.
Measurement
Women empowerment can be measured through the Gender Empowerment Measure (GEM), which shows women's participation in a given nation, both politically and economically. GEM is calculated by tracking "the share of seats in parliament held by women; of female legislators, senior officials and managers; and of female profession and technical workers; and the gender disparity in earned income, reflecting economic independence". It then ranks countries given this information. Other measures that take into account the importance of female participation and equality include: the Gender Parity Index and the Gender-related Development Index (GDI).
Importance of women in societies
Entire nations, businesses, communities and groups can benefit from the implementation of programs and policies that adopt the notion of women empowerment. Empowerment is one of the main procedural concerns when addressing human rights and development. The Human Development and Capabilities Approach, the Millennium Development Goals, and other credible approaches/goals point to empowerment and participation as a necessary step if a country is to overcome the obstacles associated with poverty. women require principally social support to fight their sense of inadequacy and fears to enhance their self-respect and dignity. Empowering women means control over their bodies and becoming economically independent, controlling resources like land and property and reduction of burden of work. programmes here in Kenya aims at women's empowerment needs to create and strengthen sisterhood and to promote overall nurturing, caring and gentleness. Woman rights organizations emphasis on women developments efforts. Being conference 1995 had identified certain quantitative and qualitative indicators of women empowerment. CHAPTER 6
Women in positions of power
Women in positions of power are women who hold an occupation that gives them great, influence and/ responsibility . Historically. Power and positions has been distributed among the sexes disparately. Power and powerful positions have most often been associated with men as opposed to women, gender equality increases, women hold more and more powerful positions, due to policy and social reforms
Accurate and proportional representation of women in social systems has been shown to be important to long-lasting success of the system. Additionally, a study shows that “absence is not merely a sign of disadvantage and disenfranchisement, but the exclusion of women from positions of power also compounds gender stereotypes and retards the pace of equalization".
Position of power Occupational power refers to power over coworkers in the field. Positions of power can exist in almost any setting, from small scale, unofficial groups or clubs, all the way to the obvious leaders of nations or CEOs of companies. These more official situations are found in many areas, such as government, industry and business, science and academia, the media, and many other sectors.
Positions of power and gender are very intertwined. As one study pointed out, “Power differences frequently underlie what appear to
[I] Gender as a factor
be gender differences in behavior; as society is currently configured, power and gender are never independent". As such, gender relates to power in the different ways power is acquired, used, and manifested. A 1988 journal article summarizes this relation between gender and power: "the idea that women and men differ in power motivation is reinforced by history and culture. In the history of the west, certainly, women have had less access to most forms of power than have men. Many people believe that men are interested in power and getting power while women are not. Others hold that men and women differ in the ways that they establish, maintain and express power".Additionally, studies have shown that increasing women’s participation in leadership positions decreases corruption, as “women are less involved in bribery, and are less likely to condone bribe taking”.] A study on gender and corruption from 2000 also found that “cross-country data show that corruption is less severe where women hold a larger share of parliamentary seats and senior positions in the government bureaucracy, and comprise a larger share of the labor force”.
In addition to the male-female split in the distribution of positions of power, many other factors play a role in who has power. Race, class, sexuality, age, and other factors all play a significant part in who is in control. These factors play in especially when coupled with the gender difference: research from the Journal of the National Association of Social Workers has found that the “double burden of racism and sexism exacts a toll on their mental health and restricts their opportunities”.]Additionally, according to another study, "the degree to which a system successfully includes women can indicate a propensity for the system to include other disenfranchised minorities
[II] Traditional roles and stereotypes
Traditional roles for men and women in most cultures have relegated women to working in the home primarily. This traditional role of fostering and nurturing others ensued from various sources, but the results are a decrease in the value of work done by women and a decreased ability to work outside the home This is paired with the societal expectation of the woman to take care of the home and family, and with that the lack of male support in the caretaking of the home. This all leads to the expectation that women have responsibilities in the home and often plays a part in occupational sexism.
Other traditional views of women relegate them to certain occupations. The view of women as caretakers of the family extends beyond the familial unit to others. Women have traditionally been seen as caretakers, of both people and other beings and things However, this caretaker occupation has most often been a subordinate one, under the direction of a superior, usually a man. The example of the vastly female-dominated nurse occupation, 95% women as of the 2000sreflects this, as it is the doctors that ultimately are in charge and have the power in the nurse-doctor relationship.
Traditional stereotypes of women make them out to be much more emotional and irrational than men, and thus less suited for many important jobs However, it has been found that while there is some basis to the stereotype, it does not hold true universally under statistical scrutiny. One survey based in South Africa found that "over 30 per cent ... are of the opinion that women are too emotional to be able to handle high level leadership positions" ]evidently, stereotypes persist and still take effect.
Studies show that "it is common for stereotypical ideas about women's abilities to perform well in leadership positions to inform people's perceptions about women leaders".
[III] Women in Government systems
For many years and in most regions of the globe, politics had not allowed women to play a significant role in government. Even in the early 1900s, politics were viewed almost exclusively as the domain of men. However, women’s movements and culture-changing events such as World War II gradually increased women’s rights and roles in politics.] Many factors go into the degree of female participation in governments across the world. One 1999 study found: "[the] electoral system structure, left party government, the timing of women's suffrage, the share of women in professional occupations, and cultural attitudes toward the role of women in politics each play a role in accounting for variation in the degree of gender inequality in political representation around the world” Even still, there are many other factors that play a serious role in female participation in government. There is a significant “perceived liability” to a party of having a female candidate for office, according to a 2005 study. Even today, no country in the world has 50% or higher female participation in a national legislature, and 73% of countries have less than 20% female participation.
There are multiple levels of power positions in the government from the local level to the national level. Accordingly, there are different degrees to which women partake in these different levels. For example, studies have found in India that "large scale membership of women in local councils" can be more effective in exerting influence, such as over crime rates, than "their presence in higher level leadership positions" ] However, it is important to have women at all levels of government to ensure the representation as well as enacting of women's interests Voting
Women were deprived of exercising political power in every country until granted the right to vote. After earning the right to vote, it often took decades for women to turn out to the polls in numbers proportional to their male counterparts In the U.S. today, women are statistically more likely to vote than men a pattern that occurs in certain countries, such as Scandinavian countries, while the opposite occurs in others, such as India Scandinavian countries are also some of the countries with greatest female representation in government positions Exercising the right to vote is a reflection of the power women feel they have in their political systems.
Today, women are enfranchised in all countries with a legislature other than Saudi Arabia. A 2006 study demonstrated that “although women have the legal right to vote and stand for elections in almost every country of the world, cultural barriers to women’s use of their political rights, including family resistance and illiteracy, remain”.
[IV] Quotas
Many countries have instituted quotas dictating a minimum number of women to be given elected positions in governments. In general, the quota system has acted as a fast-track to incorporating greater female representation into the governing systemsSeveral countries, such as Rwanda, which have established quota systems successfully have even recently surpassed traditionally highly gender representative countries based on the quota requirements. However, there are still flaws to quota systems and there is some controversy over the effectiveness of representation]as some studies have found actual policy change to be limited.
[V] International organizations
International bodies such as the UN have established goals for female representation in governing bodies. Thirty percent of elected position seats was recommended as the critical mass necessary to gain effective policy from female representation]However, even these international bodies that promote female empowerment on many scales themselves lack proportional gender representation. On Wikipedia’s List of current .Permanent Representatives to the United Nations, of the 192 representatives, only 32 are women, which is only 16.67% female, barely over half of what they recommend for governing bodies. Additionally, of these 32 countries represented by women, only three, the united state Singapore, and Luxembourg, are considered core countries, making women-represented core countries only an even smaller percentage.
[VI] Business and industry
Most top and high-power positions in businesses and companies are held by me Women currently hold 4.4 percent of Fortune 500 CEO roles and 4.4 percent of Fortune 1000 CEO role Research has shown “a consistent difference favoring men in accessibility to, and utility of, resources for power”. Thus, business and industry worldwide still sees a harsh split between the genders in terms of who has control.
However, having women in leadership positions can be in the company’s best interests. Studies have found that gender diversity in top-level boards means broader perspectives and opinions, which result in more comprehensive outcomes. A study on firms in Denmark found that “the proportion of women in top management jobs tends to have positive effects on firm performance, even after controlling for numerous characteristics of the firm and direction of causality”.Additionally, a 2004 study from Bottom Line found that: “Companies with the highest representation of women on their top management teams experienced better financial performance than companies with the lowest women’s representation”.
In order to try to achieve greater gender equality in workplace leadership positions, the European Union established a goal to have 40% women in non-executive board-member positions in publicly listed companies by 2020
During the 1980s, many pushed for pay equality for women. Unfortunately, this did not lead to greater employment of women in higher roles. New tactics need to be enacted in order to give employers incentives to hire more women, specifically for management and executive roles. “Women make up less than 5% of CEOs at Fortune 500 companies, hold less than 25% of management roles, and just less than 19% of board roles globally. While CEOs of companies are working toward creating more female employees as leaders, the root of the problem is often not addressed. Discrepancies often occur between qualities of leaders and qualities of women as leaders. Once women are respected and given credibility in the workplace, they will have the ability to occupy higher positions. “A significant body of research shows that for women, the subtle gender bias that persists in organizations and in society disrupts the learning cycle at the heart of becoming a leader.”Once this bias is rectified, women will be able to gain leadership positions in their companies and/or organizations.
[VII] The glass ceiling
In the workplace, both in the public and private sector, the opportunities available to women are trumped by a glass ceiling. The glass ceiling is a phenomenon in which women in the workplace, climb the corporate ladder through with qualifications equal to those of their male counterparts only to find that they cannot proceed past a certain point due to gender stereotypes and their implications. These gender stereotypes create barriers for women trying to reach positions of power which is responsible for creating and influencing the glass ceiling effect. The glass ceiling most directly affects those women who spend many years working in an industry to build up achievements and a status of credibility in order to be considered for positions of power within the company or industry.Yet despite their competence, women are not offered top CEO positions because of their sex and existing stereotypes that say that women are not cut out to head such big responsibilities. However, when these women's achievements are ignored and their success halted because of ignorant stereotypes, they are not the only ones affected. Many young women entering the workforce often look up to these driven women and aspire to achieve many of the same dreams. Yet when these young women witness their mentors and idols failing to achieve their dreams because of gender inequality, a culture begins to develop amongst women where they do not feel worthy of power and struggle with self empowerment. This is an immense reason why a lot of women do not chase after positions of power because of a lack of self-worth brought on by gender stereotypes and inequalitiesThe glass ceiling is continuing to effect women today, but with forced attention on gender equality, women will be able to break though this invisible ceiling and effect change in the corporate world. While companies are shifting toward greater gender diversity in the workplace, it is still necessary to identify and rectify why women are not gaining leadership positions, even though equal pay for equal work exists. Evidence shows that organizations who play an active management role in diversity in the workplace have positive results. Active management in diversity has led to pay equity, more flexible schedules, and equal
[VIII] Academia and education
In academia as well, much remains to be accomplished in terms of gender equality. Many departments, especially those in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields, are heavily male-dominated.
Women achieve disproportionately less prestige and success in academia than their male counterparts. They are less likely to be tenured and to receive promotions to more influential or powerful positions. Women in academia also earn a lower income, on average, than their male counterparts, even when adjusted. While hiring of women in academic fields has been on a slight rise, it is mainly in entry-level occupations and not for high-level positions where women are most lacking.Integrating women more thoroughly into academia is important to developing future gender equality as well as greater research outcomes. These high disproportions in fields that are seen as being male fields are the consequences of gender socialization that funnel women into specific fields, otherwise known as "care" fields, such as teaching.access to advancement opportunity. Using innovation in the workplace and installing unconventional programs has landed success in employing more Academia

[VIIII] Example of success
According to the Pew Research Center, after extensive research,
the key barrier for why women either are not advancing in their careers or are not being viewed as competitors for top positions in companies is because there are “many interruptions related to motherhood that may make it harder for wome ]Forbes provides scenarios that even if women have full-time jobs, they are still the one responsible for any family dilemmas rather than men David White argues that men during the 1960s, as implemented in his study, “being the sole provider for the family gave men a significant amount of power in their homes and contributed to feelings of male superiority” Economics research states that culture can “transmit values and norms that last for centuries and even millennia” and they have “nothing to substantiate them except handed-down beliefs”. This research indicates that one reason women are not advancing in top positions in businesses is because of gender norms that have perpetuated into the 20th century.
[X] women contemporary examples
Africa
Most countries in Africa leave women without easy avenues to powerful positions in any area. However, there are some exceptions, such as Rwanda. Rwanda, with their new constitution after the conclusion of the Rwandan Civil War, it was written in that 30% of policy-making positions must be allocated to women.]In 2003 with the first election of the new constitution, Rwanda surpassed Sweden to be the country with the highest percentage of women in its parliament with 48.8%.
Nordic countries
Norway, Sweden, Finland, and other countries in Scandinavia have had long-established parliaments and have gone through a long, slow process of integrating women into power positions. As a result, Sweden is the country with the second highest rate of female participation in government, behind Rwanda.
Middle East
The Middle East is home to some of the most female-oppressive countries, such as Saudi Arabia where women are not allowed to vote However, some countries, especially more liberal ones such as the United Arab Emirates, many women are making progress toward greater power
Latin America
The prime example of integration of women into powerful positions in Latin America is Argentina, the first country in the world to adopt a quota system, requiring 15% female participation in the electoral system in 1990. Additionally, Chile’s current president is a woman, Michelle Bachelet.
India
One of the highly significant things and provisions introduced by the new Companies Act of India, is the mandatory inclusion of at least one woman director to the Board of every prescribed class of companies in India. This provision can be considered as revolutionary initiation by the Government of India, for the purposes of empowerment of the women in the Indian Corporate world thereby strengthening and promoting contributions of women to the economic progress of the country.
CHAPTER 7
Women’s rights global goals, and gender violence.
Bottom of Form
Women’s rights are the fundamental human rights that were enshrined by the United Nations,. These rights include the right to live free from violence, slavery, and discrimination; to be educated; to own property; to vote; and to earn a fair and equal wage.
As the now-famous saying goes, “women’s rights are human rights.” That is to say, women are entitled to all of these rights. Yet almost everywhere around the world, women and girls are still denied them, often simply because of their gender.Winning rights for women is about more than giving opportunities to any individual woman or girl; it is also about changing how countries and communities work. It involves changing laws and policies, winning hearts and minds, and investing in strong women’s organizations and movements.
Global Fund for Women exists to support the tireless and courageous efforts of women’s groups who work every day to win rights for women and girls. These groups are working to ensure women can own property, vote, run for office, get paid fair wages, and live free from violence – including domestic violence, sexual assault, and harmful practices such as female genital mutilation. We want every woman and girl to realize the rights that are enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We also stand for other rights that are vital for women’s equality. We stand for a woman’s right to decide if and when she has children, and to have high-quality health care that means she won’t die in pregnancy or during childbirth. We know female genital mutilation is a violation of girls’ rights, and must be eliminated. And we stand for the right of every woman to live equally and free from discrimination, no matter her sexuality or identity.
We support two critical documents for women’s rights that have followed the UN declaration. The Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), an international bill of rights for women, requires governments to end gender discrimination and affirms women’s rights to health services, including family planning. The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, adopted in 1995 at the UN’s Fourth World Conference in Beijing, was a rallying cry to embed gender equality and women’s rights in every facet of life. The UN Millennium Development Goals set specific targets to reduce poverty, including targets for increased gender equality in education, work, and representation. UN Women found that progress was uneven. Globally, more women are now in school and work. Yet girls are still more likely than boys to be out of school (particularly at the secondary level). And although the number of women in elected office has risen, they are still only 21.8 percent of parliamentarians. What’s more, women’s rights remain at risk in many areas not addressed in the millennium goals – from violence against women to sexual and reproductive rights. And women who are already marginalized because of their race, caste, sexuality, income, or location see the fewest gains of all.
The new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) hold real promise to embed advances in women’s rights, and include a specific goal (Goal 5) for gender equality. Goal 5 is more broad-based than the last gender goal and includes targets on ending gender-based violence, eliminating child marriage and female genital mutilation, and ensuring access to sexual and reproductive health. It also includes equal access to education, expanding women’s economic opportunities, and reducing the burdens of unpaid care work on women and girls. Now it is up to all of us to hold governments accountable for their commitments and make sure the goals are met. Involving
Gender-based violence involves men and women, in which the female is usually the target, and is derived from unequal power relationships between men and women. Violence is directed specifically against a woman because she is a woman or affects women disproportionately. It includes, but is not limited to, physical, sexual, and psychological harm The most pervasive form of gender-based violence is abuse of a woman by intimate male partners.
Gender-based violence includes: battering, intimate partner violence (including marital rape, sexual violence, and dowry/bride price-related violence ), feticide, sexual abuse of female children in the household, honour crimes, early marriage, forced marriage, female genital mutilation (FBM)/cutting and other traditional practices harmful to women, sexual harassment and intimidation at work, in school and elsewhere, commercial sexual exploitation, and trafficking of girls and women.
In 1995, the U.N. expanded the definition to include: violations of the rights of women in situations of armed conflict, including systematic rape, sexual slavery, and forced pregnancy; forced sterilization, forced abortion, and coerced or forced use of contraceptives; and prenatal sex selection and female infanticide. It further recognised the particular vulnerabilities of women belonging to minorities: the elderly and the displaced; indigenous, refugee, and migrant communities; women living in impoverished rural or remote areas, or in detention.
The global community typically groups these abuses into three categories:
Family Violence: The most widespread type of violence against women. This includes any abuse that occurs within the family context where the perpetrator is known to the girl or woman. Common examples are spousal beatings; marital rape; forced marriage; sexual abuse of a girl by a father, uncle, or stepfather; and verbal abuse and trauma related to “dowry” and “not giving birth to a son”.
Community Violence: This includes violence at the hands of a perpetrator unknown or unrelated to the woman and often comes in the form of rape, sexual harassment, forced prostitution or trafficking, and public humiliation.
State Violence: This includes violations that are condoned and committed by individuals associated with the government. This is often seen in the form of violence at the hands of police, prison guards, refugee camp guards, border officials, and even peacekeeping troops. In conflict regions of the world, systematic rape and sexual violence is often used as a tool of war.
Conclusion..
Although women have made many social-economic strides in many instances, they are still struggling with getting equal opportunities and rewards as men. The exciting things is that there are now many equal opportunities open for them, by embracing new Technology targets which are fast growing in today’s media world. This will greatly help women to swim upstream against the tides of fear and stigma is service delivery and change management. Women are now pro-active and are able to develop differentiated customized experiences globally. Today God is creating wave after wave of women receptive of the changing trends. They are growing wiser as what the Bible say’s “wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom and with all they getting, get understanding” (pro 4:7)NKJV. Wisdom has opened their eyes to embrace innovation and technology, by studying hard to beat set goals. They are becoming the most change management agents even to deal with problems in the family and society.
While dealing with raising her teenage children and struggling with the challenges in her book Ann Townsend, Time for change, wrote that
“The interesting thing was that once
i had admitted that I had a problem with myself, I was able to tackle
it and work at boosting my sagging
self-esteem “(Page 15).
She was struggling with competition between her and her daughter, whom she was forcing to be like her, which can never be.
Everyone needs to discover themselves through their own God’s given wisdom and plan to create enough space and time to do what they can do.
Discovering one-self means coming out of what you know and accepting to accommodate what you don’t know positively. It means accepting change for the better and to be ready to accept transformation and not seeing yourself better than others. In support of what Jim Addison said in his book Discover your Divine Destiny that,
“Here we see clearly that inward and
outward change taken place primarily
though a change of mind-set. The
word “transformed” in Greek is “Metamorphoo”
which of cause is the world from which ”
we get English word “metamorphosis”
Metamorphosis is a change of form or character by natural or supernatural development “(pg 15).Metamorphosis or change is inevitable and is word urge which complement the outward display of a person that people sometimes ignore, because of fear and stigma. New Technologies that are available are offering opportunity for real break through in productivity. The use of computerized information system has significantly improved communication everywhere. Women no longer need to be led by holding their hands, because there are now free choices for one to be “Metamorphosised”. Women are a seed of this generation and are a part of the cultural vocabulary, so through their sacrifice they can become heroes of today. They need to discover their divine destiny and be able to position themselves squally as the fitting blocks on the wall of prosperity. Nowadays life is not a conflict of guns and swords but of ideas. It is a clash of paradigms , values system and good visions for the future. The Bible correctly says that,
“My people are destroyed because of lack of knowledge;
I will also reject thee, that thou shall not be priest to me..’
(Hebrews 4:6) KJV.
It is therefore without doubt that without knowledge people can be doomed, wasted and become stagnant. Knowledge is power, it is a rotating wheel ever moving forward to the right direction. Women can get professional and religious guidance from people of God, managers, coaches and career councilors to excel. They should read stories of other successful women around them and in the world at large, who have made success stories that have hit headline as rising stars. A good example of role models and success women stories are President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia, a Nobel Peace laureate and Africa first elected female president, Fatuma Zarika World Boxing council Super bantamweight champion from Kenya, Maria Shaparova, the 21st seed Tennis champion from Russia, Theresa May, British Prime Minister Angela Markels the German chancellor ,but to name a few, the list is growing and there is now no stopping of women going forward. I concur with Shirley Lees in her book, The role of women where she says,
“In this century women have been moving back into
Society, functioning alongside men and very
often doing the same work as fellow human beings”
And goes on to say that ,
“The most significant difference between men
and women lie in their physiological structure
and social behavior rather than in intelligence
Skill and behavior”. (page 78-79)pp
With all these in the reserve, we can conclude that women are equal intelligent and are strong enough to perform any skils provided. They can build awesome careers by acknowledging that their efforts can yield good outcomes beyond success. By making self positive declaration and statements and reading them aloud in front of their mirrors to improve self-images and self-resolve.
I vehemently support what Miss Lupita Nyong’o a Kenyan Luo girl from Kisumu County in Nyanza province, who has made it in life as a successful Film Actress in the USA. Her caption appeared in the Newspaper of the Sunday Nation, Sunday view, ‘What they say column’, opinion page. She was commenting to defuse fear, stigma and sex abuse. She wrote
“I hope we are in a pivotal role and can form a
Community where a woman can speak up about
Abuse and not suffer another abuse by not being
Believed. That’s why we don’t speak up for fear
Of suffering twice and for fear of being labeled and characterized
by our moment of powerlessness. Though we may have endured
Powerlessness at the hands of Harvey Weinstein, by
Speaking together, we can regain that power”.
(page 15 ).
Fear, stigma and sex abuse are some of the dragons that threaten the success of mostly women in society today and it is through the same women folk that they can slay these dragons. Through innovation and Technology women can tame the raising challenges like HIV/AIDS, early marriages, Female genital manipulation (FGM), hunger, insecurity, politics, sex abuse and any other hitting challenges facing them.
Women are good detonators of failure and success through their own life experiences and have the opportunities to make good life choices to succeed; and a chance to try again in case they fail. They should not allow mediocricy to find abode in their minds. Women are now redeemed, no longer confined and have become valued members of organizations and prudent people able to make good decisions. I concur with David A. Oyedepo in his book Walking in Dominion where he wrote that,
“Until you begin to reign the area where God has
placed you, you are not fulfilling your calling.
the world should be looking at us to learn how
to live! Oh yes, they should be asking “which
way?” (page 7)
This statement should announce the definite emergence of exalted women who must rule and have dominion displaying dividends in productivity. They can do this by using the right Technology in computerizing information in their chosen career. The world is firt becoming a competitive arena and the speed of Research and Technology has doubled and is changing every day. I support what Rod Parsley wrote in his book –Culturally Incorrect that,
“We must face the disturbing fact that Technology
is racing forward so quickly, policy makers and
so-called bioethicists can’t possibly keep up.
and even when a highly questionable line of
research is banned in the United State, it
usually continues unregulated in places like
China and south Korea.”( page 101).
This is a very good observation and it is true that even in many areas of innovation, changes are seen everyday. A produnt person is one who exercise good judgment and there is no law that prohibits women from being good decision makers. They can start businesses that they are passionate about and become equal successful. The good thing about business is that it teaches one important lesson that success cannot. Good business is about creating unique products and offering unique services that people need and love. I agree with Dr. Larry Burkett, Business by the book who says that,
“It doesn’t take all that much talent to make money
today. It’s usually a matter of being in the right
place at the right time with the right product”.(page 45)
What women need are good management skills, good business ideas and resources, and should know that business is always about risk taking. They should avoid copy-pasted ideas that might coast them if they venture into fields that they are passionate about. They can also utilise the power of the internet to create an online presence.
It is a welcome fact for women in Kenya because now there is a provision for them in the Kenyan constitution for equal rights. Article 27, sub article 3, which says that,
“Women and men have the right to equal opportunities
In politics, economic, culture and social spheres”.
Women should now seize these opportunities and growth experiences to remain strong and able to synergise.
Women are not a ‘weaker sex’ and headship does not sanctify masculine desires to dominate as though it is the male prerogative to exercise power over others as though the male is to sub- due and the female is to be subdued. Let women fight for their rightful place in society by working hard and being adventurous. A very encouraging captions appeared in the Sunday standard Newspaper from Nairobi, Kenya which said,
“Saud Arabia has for the first time allowed women to
spectate at a football match, part of easing of strict
rules on gender separation by the ultra-conservative
Muslim country”
At last women in that country are finding relief from the right laws that have for a long time denied them freedom even of expression .May women not loose courage because God is making all things beautiful for them in God’s own time. They also need more interventions, conferences, meetings to discuss how to achieve gender balance and woman inclusion. They should stop clinging to old time worn mentality that does not recognize or appreciate their leadership.
