“Deus Ex Machina: The Hallowed Horror in Alien.” This paper investigates the
intersection of religion and horror films, particularly as seen in the Alien franchise,
and examines the resulting religious consequences of AI. This paper explores how
the Christian notion of creation, salvation, and personhood must be revised or at
least reconsidered due to recent biotechnological inventions.

Manuscripts in Preparation
1. Call, J.N., “Secularizing the Sacred, Reconciling Paradoxes: Intertextuality,
Translation, and Literary Theory of Rabbinic Commentary and Postmodern
Criticism” (In preparation, December 2018). This essay explores three things:
intertextuality, translation, and the literary theory of Midrash assumed in
postmodernity. I examine briefly the Midrash and its importance, as well as strands
of postmodernism found therein and its influence on literary criticism. This
discovery has, as of late, lead to questions of meaning. Ultimately, I argue that
though there exists a faint echo of postmodern exegesis.
2. Call, J.N., “Religious Rebirth: A Response to Postmodernism’s Evolutionary
Devaluations and the Survival of God.” (In preparation, December 2018). This essay
investigates how the evolution of postmodernism’s devaluation from traditional
religious morals have created a resurgence of religiosity found in fundamentalism. I
argue that only through adopting and adapting a more progressive orthodoxy: one
that pushes to expand traditional faith claims and narratives to accommodate
shifting societal valuations and new scientific discoveries, can religion survive
postmodernity.
