James Ussery Lake Oswego, OR-- Experienced IT Professional | Entrepreneur | Resource Manager Relocating from Dallas to Portland March 1, 2024. Bachelor's degree in computer science earned in 2001. Family Commitment: Spent the last 15 years running a business out of the country. My return to the United States is driven by family commitments, ensuring my son's successful completion of his last two years of high school and his preparation for college. Server Administration and Monitoring: My first experience with Windows was v3.1. My experience in server administration dates back to Windows NT and Windows 2000 Server. Nearly all the work experience I've had for the last 25 years have had some kind of Windows administration. Today I host clients privately using Windows 2016 and 2022 and various Ubuntu and Red Hat distros. My key roles were configuring and managing cloud backups, disaster recovery, hosting, database server management, user management, security, updates, and troubleshooting. My proficiency in network management, though primarily self-taught while running my business, includes configuring Cisco routers and firewalls as needed. Additionally, I've worked with clients to manage multiple domains for Google Workspace as well as Microsoft Exchange Online and Office 365 setting up and managing email users as well as migrating boxes. I currently use Microsoft Azure to host a few clients and so I'm close to it regularly enough and have prioritized regular study sessions. Linux and Script Writing: I've also delved into Linux and script writing over the last 5+ years. I taught myself Bash scripting for server operations and shell tasks. My self-taught PHP knowledge, initially for web development, has proven valuable in various scripting tasks. I've played with python a couple of times but have yet to take a class on it. Web Server Management: I've handled both Windows IIS (PHP and .NET) as well as Apache and Nginx in Linux. Over the last few years I've migrated from Apache to mostly Nginx, optimizing performance and security for primarily PHP. It's important to note that my tasks have, over the years, involved change management practices to ensure that modifications and updates are executed smoothly and with minimal impact on services and users. Web Development and Application Development: My wife and I started a business focused on remote web and application development. We built .NET applications for the medical industry, a custom social networking platform, and possibly over 1000 websites for small businesses between DotNetNuke, WordPress, Drupal and Joomla with a few sites from Wix and Squarespace. We've only recently started cutting our teeth on Laravel. We gathered requirements, created documentation, prioritized estimates first, and remained strict with SDLC. I've been a part of the analysis, design and architecture phases, even on the technical level. I've personally designed databases and ERDs for several applications and played the role of lead developer on multiple occasions, mandating strict Development, Staging, and Production environments where deployment was monitored and access controlled. We took several clients beyond development into hosting where I setup and managed sites and applications on dedicated VMs where we created hosting and maintenance plans for them. I have history with helpdesks so setting up ticketing systems and documenting and training on procedures was just part of the job. We grew our remote network to assist clients with SEO, PPC, Email and even Social Media marketing. So we've had experiences across the board. It's been a ride.
