We Never Learn
Last week, news of another victim of alleged fraternity hazing hogged the
headlines of most newspapers. Chris Anthony Mendez, a 20-year old Bachelor of
Science major in Public Administration graduating student of the University of the
Philippines, was declared dead on arrival after being rushed to the Veteran’s Memorial
Medical Center. Chris bore bruises all over his body, particularly on the back of the
arms and thighs, injuries sustained apparently from repeated paddling. As expected,
this latest occurrence of a barbaric and outlawed practice has drawn the indignation and
condemnation of people from different sectors of society.
Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago for one, pushed for the abolition of all
fraternities and sororities nationwide, saying these organizations are nothing but elitist
enclaves. Santiago filed Senate Resolution No. 112, calling for a legislative
investigation on Mendez’s death and also proposed for a comprehensive review on the
Anti-Hazing Law (Republic Act 8049) because it failed to protect a student from violent
fraternity initiations. Senate Majority Floor Leader Francis Pangilinan, a member of
Upsilon fraternity said he would absolutely support the call to investigate the hazing
deaths while Senator Juan Ponce Enrile, for his part, called on all fraternity alumni to
initiate moves that would put a stop to the hazing incidents that practically harm the
neophyte recruits.
What would lead these young, promising students to risk their future just to have
that opportunity to gain acceptance to these fraternities and sororities? Surely, they’ve
heard of similar incidents before. The names of Lenny Villa and Alex Ycasiano have
certainly not been forgotten. These students know the risks involved, the possibility of
losing life and limb in senseless initiation rites, yet they continue to persist in joining
these organizations. We do realize that by joining fraternities and sororities, one
immediately gains access to a wide social network, which can prove useful especially
when it comes to matters concerning business and finance. The lure of gaining social
stature and the opportunity and prestige of enjoying certain “privileges” when one
becomes a member further add to the attraction.
However, these organizations do not have to subject aspiring members to such
senseless, barbaric and degrading rites of passage. These brutal acts do not
accomplish anything but promote a culture of violence. There are other less harmful but
equally effective ways to assess the loyalty, discipline and the mental and physical
capacities of aspirants. There are many teambuilding activities and workshops that can
be facilitated by these organizations’ “elders” to test the capabilities of these youngsters.
How many more bright, promising students like Chris Anthony Mendez need to
die before we learn our lesson? The lessons of the past are there precisely for us to
learn from. Yet, sadly, we never seem to take heed. Those responsible for the death of
Chris Anthony Mendez must be caught and punished, otherwise, we are bound to
commit the same mistake over and over again.
