April 23, 2019 TO THE EDITOR: In the upcoming special election, the people have heard ad nauseam from all the candidates, myself included, of our support for a border wall, our pro-life stance, our support for our veterans and all the other standard talking points. What they haven’t heard much about is what we will actually do for eastern North Carolina and what issues we will fight for. On can not underestimate the importance of Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point to the economic well being of the Third Congressional District. From the men and women in both military and civilian roles that rely on Cherry Point for a livelihood to the numerous small businesses, restaurants, hospitals, etc., that rely on Cherry Point for their existence, the base is crucial to economic stability in the region. https://www.carolinacoastonline.com/news_times/opinions/letters_to_editor/article_3f-e9-a393-e725345bd806.html 1/2 12/5/22, 9:49 PM I know Cherry Point’s importance | Letters To Editor | carolinacoastonline.com We recently lost one fighter squadron to another base and the remaining fighter squadrons at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point test fly low level bombing runs over the ocean. The wind turbine industry is lobbying to build these turbines in their flight path. If they do that there is a huge possibility that Cherry Point would have to close pretty much devastating the entire area since Cherry Point employs 15,000 people and generates $2.5 billion. A bill before the North Carolina Senate is likely to fail because of the strength of the wind turbine lobby in its efforts to influence politicians in Raleigh. We need federal action to protect Cherry Point before it’s too late. If elected I will fight to ban wind turbine construction that is in the way of navigational paths at Cherry Point, New River and Camp Lejeune. If any of these bases were to close or be severely cut back the impact on the Third District’s economy would be catastrophic. There would be a cascading effect from Havelock to Jacksonville, up to New Bern and Greenville that would eventually cause economic destruction to much of eastern Carolina. I understand this and will fight tooth and nail to protect our interests in Eastern Carolina by Protecting Cherry Point.
