With over a decade writing across all platforms, including newspaper, TV and agency, I produce copy that entices, informs and inspires for my satisfied clients. I started out and grew-up on both sides of the media equation—editorial and production—so I know a lot about how to integrate writing and design. Working on web development teams, I have developed a knack for SEO.
I learned the art of writing succinctly from my mentor Jim Sutherland, formerly of Vancouver magazine, Western Living and the Vancouver Sun. Jim handed me my first column—the Curve, a ‘charticle’ that graphed the ups and downs of cultural trends over 25 years—an assignment that honed razor-sharp researcher skills, a tendency to keep my ear to the ground and the ability to deliver under non-negotiable deadlines. Jim taught me a lot about how to write in a way that connects emotionally with audiences, to “show” as opposed to “tell” and keep things conversational—to write like I’m speaking to a friend.
Other things I bring to the table:
• The proverbial 10,000 hours writing, proofing and editing
• Supernatural ability to take complex ideas and transform them into digestible prose
• Creating content that’s Google friendly, SEO optimized with an eye to long-tail keywords, attention-getting headlines, meta descriptions, reputable links and image alt text
• A big-picture “ideas” person who nonetheless spots a typo from a mile away
• An uncanny ability to adapt to voice and also write across many different asset channels, including web, print media, video scripts, point of sale and proposals.
