EBUKA ONUNAIWU Profile Thinker Ebuka is an environmental, social and governance (ESG) thinker with an in-depth understanding of business, social and environmental sustainability. Development Advocate Ebuka is the Advocacy Lead of CSR-in-Action Advocacy, he has deep interest in national development and has spent the last 5 years working for organisations in the development sector. Ebuka’s working experience in the development sector ranges from community development to teaching, program coordination, event reporting, impact assessment and reporting. He is also keen in the political development of Nigeria and Africa. Ebuka’s overarching goal is to bring large scale development to Africa and to affect as many lives as he can through economic, social and environmental programs in the nearest future. Consultant Ebuka also works as a sustainability consultant for CSR-in-Action Consulting and has consulted with many clients particularly from the oil and gas, and mining sectors. Daily, Ebuka applies his sustainability knowledge in analysing events and advising entities on the economic, environmental, social and governance dimensions of their operations. Ebuka is driven by the end goal of his work, which is the solutions he provides to organisations, which contribute to development in several local communities, and ultimately to national and global sustainable development. Ebuka’s interest sectors include oil and gas, mining, manufacturing and consumer goods, telecommunications, financial services and education. His core interest areas include, community development, stakeholder engagement, social responsibility, carbon management, ESG risk mitigation, resource efficiency, product responsibility, responsible investing, sustainable business models and value chain. Youth Mentor Ebuka contributes his own quota to the development of Nigeria’s future generation by mentoring several undergraduates of Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, Nigeria through the Nigerian Bottling Company sponsored “YouthEmpowered” program. Ebuka was selected to join this program in 2017. Ebuka is a value coach who believes that the right values should be passed on to Nigeria’s younger generation in other for them to develop the right mindset for hard work, visioning, self-development and citizenship. Professional Experience Sustainability Management, Reporting and Auditing As a sustainability consultant, Ebuka has worked with other sustainability professionals to develop organisation-wide sustainability strategies and policies for managing the sustainability activities of businesses. With broad knowledge in the various aspects of sustainability, Ebuka is able to proffer sustainable solutions to material business issues. Ebuka is an expert in writing sustainability reports and conducting sustainability audits. He has been engaged in writing several sustainability reports for businesses from various sectors using the GRI Framework. Ebuka has also audited of several organisations’ sustainability activities using the AccountAbility AA1000AS framework. Project Management Ebuka is the project manager of the foremost Sustainability in the Extractive Industries (SITEI) Conference, the leading sustainability workshop for oil and gas and mining stakeholders in Nigeria. The Conference is organised in partnership with the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources (FMPR), the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development (FMMSD), Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria (PETAN), Miners Association of Nigeria (MAN), and the Nigeria Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS). The Conference which is now in its 7th year, annually hosts the minister of mines and steel development, the minister of state for petroleum resources and other key dignitaries from the local and international extractive sector. It also brings together over 700 professionals from oil and gas, mining, government, academia, community, civil society organisations and the media. Community/Stakeholder Engagement and Needs Assessment Ebuka has conducted several community engagements and needs assessment projects for oil and gas, and mining companies in with host communities in Ondo and Ogun states, Nigeria. Community engagement is one of Ebuka’s core interest areas because it helps in curbing communal violence and ensures peaceful cohabitation between businesses and communities. He has also successfully engaged communities in Abia and Kano states, Nigeria. Social and Environmental Impact Assessment (SEIA) Ebuka has led a number of social and environmental impact assessment projects in various cities across Nigeria. With an academic background in Geography and with experience in social and environmental risks, Ebuka has been able to conduct SEIAs for businesses in the cement and manufacturing sectors, produce findings and make recommendations for improvement on the processes in the project reports. Strategy Development Having worked on many projects from diverse fields and sectors, Ebuka has developed many strategy documents for implementing projects. He has developed several strategies for sustainability, communications, education, grant assessment, youth empowerment and skill acquisitions, monitoring and evaluation. Researching and Writing Ebuka frequently conducts research and writes on topical sustainability issues happening locally and globally. Ebuka is part of the team that annually publishes the “Collective Social Investment Report”, recently renamed to the “Corporate Sustainable Investor Report”.
