Different types of dental braces
Hi-
I checked the different types of dental braces for teenagers.
Types of Dental Braces
Metal/Traditional Braces
Ceramic Braces
Lingual Braces
Invisalign
Damon/Self-Ligating Braces
Description
Metal braces hold teeth together using metal brackets and wires. Modern brackets are smaller and less noticeable than the notorious "metal-mouth" braces that many adults remember. Plus, new heat-activated archwires use your body heat to help teeth move more quickly and less painful than in the past. This is the type of braces that most teenagers get, because they are the least expensive version and are often the fastest way of moving teeth into their ideal locations.
Ceramic braces are the same size and shape as metal braces, except that they have tooth-colored or clear brackets that blend in to teeth. Some even use tooth-colored wires to be even less noticeable.
Lingual braces are the same as traditional metal braces, except that the brackets and wires are placed on the inside of teeth.
Invisalign consists of a series of 18 to 30 custom-made, mouth guard-like clear plastic aligners. The aligners are removable and are replaced every 2 weeks.
Similar to traditional metal and ceramic braces, self-ligating braces make use of the bracket and wire system. This type of braces uses brackets with clips or doors that hold on to the wire, instead of the rubber band tie system.
Pros
Least expensive type; colored bands give kids a chance to express themselves
Less noticeable than metal braces; move teeth much faster than clear plastic aligners (Invisalign)
Invisible from outside
Almost invisible; Patients can eat and drink whatever they want
Supposed to hold on to less food and produce faster results because the teeth can move on their own without needing to be adjusted. This causes less friction and pressure on the teeth, so movement is less painful. Easier to keep clean. Having to make fewer trips to your dental professional means that the process costs less time and money, too.
Cons
Most noticeable type of braces
More expensive than metal braces; Brackets can stain easily if patients don’t care for them well
Difficult to clean; more expensive; not appropriate for severe cases; can be more uncomfortable at first; regular adjustments take longer and are more difficult than with traditional braces
Will not work for serious dental problems; only available for adults and teens, not children; more expensive option; can be easily lost and costly to replace; treatment may potentially take longer.
This type of braces can be found in both metal and ceramic versions, but they are not the right choice for every patient. While they do shorten treatment periods, they might not provide all of the features that a patient needs in order to have a successful orthodontic treatment.
