How To Use Storytelling to Get Clients
for Your Business
(ranking #1 on Google for the keywords “storytelling to get clients”
& “how to use storytelling to get clients”)
(link to article)
(6 Pinterest shares; 3 Facebook shares)
Storytelling is a powerful means of communication and it’s also a great tool to attract new
customers to your business! You can use stories to gain trust, to persuade and to connect
with prospective customers, making them much more willing to take the leap and hire you. In
this post, I will share some proven ways in which you can use storytelling to get more clients
for your business. Let’s use stories to develop a lead machine!
Storytelling techniques and pitches you can use for your business
#1 – Talking about Previous Projects:
People love stories and case studies are essentially stories. Your potential customers love
them because they give specific examples of how your business works. Case studies when
written in a laid-back and informal way, resemble a conversation we might have with our
friends. Never underestimate the business advantage of making our leads feel like we are
friends!
Telling in-depth stories about your previous successes (and losses, if you share what you’ve
learned with them!) has many advantages. Your potential customers get the answers to
many of their questions; you show them actual proofs that you can help them... and they get
to know you better (reducing any initial resistance they might have to hire you). Because
hiring someone we know and trust is much easier than hiring a complete stranger…
Additionally, you also get some more online traffic, as many of your potential customers go
online to find answers to the problems that you’ve solved previously for other people. If the
price and other factors are similar, they’ll probably choose you over another expert who
doesn’t share his/her business stories. Stories that connect also help consumers choose
your product at a premium with additional branding that you create.
There are many ways in which you can share case studies with your audience, for example:
– write a blog post;
– tell the story on video;
– put together a Slideshare presentation with the project highlights;
– show photos/screenshots of the first sketches you’ve made with your original ideas
regarding the project;
– draw a cartoon or comic strip illustrating how everything happened;
– create a timeline that shows all the stages throughout the project;
– create an infographic;
– etc…
If you’re going to share your client’s name and many details, just make sure you have their
permission. Many won’t mind and might even appreciate the free publicity, but if you’re
finding it hard to get their approval, you can always tell the story without giving names and
too many specific details.
This was exactly what Polly Alexandre, a consultant, did with her client. She explained what
they did on her sessions, and shared some small details about her client’s life, but not so
many that someone could identify her. At the same time, she showed potential customers
what her sessions look like, what they can expect, and how she was able to successfully
help someone with the same problems as theirs.
#2 – Sharing stories about your business daily life
Besides talking about your previous customers, you can also share how you celebrated an
important business milestone, or talk about your business daily life, your workflow, your
methods, your approach, and your favorite tools and equipment. People like to know about
the quirks of other people, the singularities and small details that make each person unique.
You might even hit the lucky strike, and share some detail that resonates with your
prospective customers’ interests/personality … becoming aware that they share something
with you might be the trigger that makes them want to engage with you.
I’ve found a great example of this in this blog, where Lara Hogan, Engineering Manager at
Etsy, talks about how she handles her public speaking gigs. In a very detailed and honest
blog post, she writes about how she prepares her presentations, how she gathers data, the
things she struggles with and how she celebrates after the events. She tells an engaging
story, sharing her ups-and-downs, showing she’s not perfect… and you know what? Even
after sharing things that she can’t do that well, she still gets invited to do public speaking
events!
This is not an exception to the rule, this is what usually happens. Your clients value your
honesty tremendously. It also makes them relate to you in some ways: they themselves are
not perfect, and they know it… and when you make someone relate and empathize with you
they’ll feel closer to you. And closeness helps in sealing deals.
#3 – Interviewing Previous Customers
This strategy is like testimonials-on-steroids. Having a satisfied customer talk highly of your
services while giving detailed examples of how you’ve helped them will give your business a
great deal of credibility, and that might be enough to make someone buy your services.
When WikiJob, a well-known graduate job site from the UK, implemented a simple, two-line
testimonial on their sign-up form, they increased the conversion rate by 34%! And that’s for a
simple testimonial, now, imagine if you show your leads a detailed interview with your
previous clients or customers and explain to them what you did, step-by-step! I know I would
be much more interested in buying services if I had all this available.
Check out this great example of a customer interview, which tells the story of how Design
Contest helped a customer reach her goals. She talks a bit about her own business niche,
and explains in detail how the company’s platform helped her. This helps potential
customers truly understand the product and builds trust.
Don’t be afraid to ask your happy customers to do an interview! Many will be happy to do it,
and you’ll both get something out of it. You get an insightful testimonial that will bring you
new clients and your interviewee gets organic publicity!
#4 – Creating interesting ads
Nowadays the online competition is fierce so you shouldn’t waste any opportunity to reach
new customers. You can easily create interesting ads that tell engaging stories to your
potential customers without spending too much money!
Poo Pourri is one example of how you could make an engaging video ad without going
overboard. This video has no special motion effects and you could easily make something
similar yourself, with a bit of patience, a handful of props and some nice friends to help with
the scenery.
Your challenge is to find a unique and entertaining way of talking about your business and
your products. Think outside the box. Tell a story. Surprise your customers! Make them
laugh, smile, feel understood… and you’ll be on your way to making them much more
interested in buying from you!

Top 5 DIY Content Marketing Tools
& Resources that You Need NOW
(link to article)
(7 Pinterest shares; 2 Facebook shares)
As marketers, when we are in a hurry trying to create new, interesting content for our
audience, we can sometimes forget how easy it is to take advantage of some great DIY
content marketing tools. These really can take your content marketing efforts to the next
level!
Today we’ll be talking about some free tools that you may not have heard about or may not
have given the attention they deserve.
#1 Snip.ly
Snip.ly is a piece of software that adds a small Call-to-Action (CTA) pop-up to any web page
that you share. It’s a very useful tool, particularly when you want to share interesting content
that you find online. It’s a win-win situation for everyone: your followers discover great
content from other sources, the original content creator gets more traffic from a different
audience and you get to spread the word out about your own content!
How it works:
– Find a great piece of content that you think your audience will love, then copy the URL;
– Go to Sniply, then paste it on your dashboard (you’ll get a custom, shortened link);
– Share your shortened link. When clicked, it will show your visitors the whole page as it is,
along with a small pop-up on the bottom that they can click to find out more about you.
You can also use Snip.ly as a simple newsletter opt-in form, allowing you to collect email
addresses for your newsletter when you share your own content. You can also set it up so
that every piece of content that you create on your blog will carry your preferred CTA with it.
The tool is free for the first 1000 clicks that you generate. With the free version you can add
a photo and a button to your CTA, change its size and some other features. If you upgrade
to the Pro version you’ll get more customization options, like changing the colors of the
pop-up as well as adding a form and images to your pop-up.
#2 RooJoom
Roojoom is an impressive tool that allows its users to organize previously created content in
an engaging and interactive display, which is in-line with the latest content marketing trends.
With this tool you can create “Tracks”. These are a type of presentation that incorporates
several types of media content in a beautiful and organized layout that subtly asks viewers to
keep going through the content using a step-by-step approach. You can embed your tracks
wherever you want, such as your blog, newsletters, social media pages, landing pages,
etc…
RooJoom claims their tool can decrease bounce duration on landing pages by 72%, and
increase click-through rates in Social campaigns by 734%! The company also shared a case
study on their website where Israel21C, an Israeli magazine, was able to receive more than
13.000 views in just 4 days… and they did this without creating any new content! Check out
their presentation here.
You might also want to read this great article with tips for creating great RooJoom
presentations!
This tool is free up to 1000 visitors/month, but if you want to customize colors or incorporate
a logo you’ll have to upgrade your account.
#3 Twitshot
If you use Twitter and don’t usually share images with your followers, then you’re missing out
a lot! Buffer has done a small study where they analyzed 100 tweets and what they’ve found
was that tweets with images received 18% more clicks, 89% more favorites and 150% more
retweets!
Twitter doesn’t natively import images from the URLs that we share, which is why the vast
majority of users don’t tweet posts with images. It takes too long to create and upload
custom pictures into tweets, so most people just skip this step. However, you can take
advantage of this, and stand out from your competitors just by using Twitshot!
When you find something online that you’d like to share, just pop on Twitshot’s website (or
use their Chrome app) and paste the URL into the dashboard. The tool will automatically
search for the images associated with the page. You then just need to pick the image that
you prefer and write the content for the tweet. If you use a service like Bit.ly to shorten your
links you can go to Bit.ly first and then paste the shortened link into Twitshot’s interface.
Twitshot is free, it integrates with Buffer and is really easy to use, so be sure to include it in
your content marketing tools arsenal!
#4 StumbleUpon
Stumble Upon is a unique tool (and very underutilized!). It works as a social bookmarking
tool, allowing us to submit our own content and to bookmark external pages that we find
interesting. The platform allows users to upvote or downvote the submitted pages. The
pages that get more upvotes are ranked better and start to appear on other users’ feeds.
After signing up on the platform you can select all the categories that you’re interested in
following, and then Stumble Upon will start showing you content that meets your criteria. You
can upvote or downvote every web page that you come across, share what you’ve found
and bookmark great finds onto a list. Then you can press the “Stumble!” button to keep
browsing your customized feed.
Every user can submit his own web pages but if you want to increase your chances of
getting more eyeballs on your content you can also pay Stumble Upon to promote your posts
to a targeted audience. You can also follow other “Stumblers”, specific Interests and
Channels (brands, companies and celebrities).
This platform has the reputation of bringing big spikes of traffic to websites and you’ll find
that the most popular pages in every category have been seen more than a hundred
thousand of times! On the other hand, traffic from Stumble Upon tends to convert less than
other social media networks, and people usually don’t stick around the pages for long. You
can compensate for these tendencies by making sure the “above-the-fold” section of your
website is very enticing and that your content is skimmable and of the highest quality.
For great tips on how to use this great tool to spread the word about your content check out
this blog post.
#5 Medium
Medium is technically a blogging platform, but since its launch, it has transformed itself into
something much bigger.
The platform allows users to write blog posts in a beautiful and clean interface, while also
giving them access to a community that actively engages with the content, commenting on
the blog posts and giving recommendations. When people read your post and “recommend
it” (Medium’s own way of “liking” a post) the platform pushes it to the top of the stories feed,
making it more likely that it gets seen. You can search for specific publications (collections of
curated posts) to submit your stories and essays. This can help you take advantage of the
big following that some of them receive (many have thousands of followers!).
Medium also has unique features that make it stand out from other publishing platforms,
such as the ability to highlight specific sentences within blog posts and adding comments. Its
users also have the ability to invite and collaborate with other writers to work on the same
blog post.
If you’re curious about this tool, here’s a great article with tips on how to get found on
Medium and an analysis of the platform by Lauren Modery, a writer who increased her social
media following and got several job opportunities since she started writing on Medium.
So there you have it, a handful of tools that will surely take your content marketing to the
next level. Have you tried any other DIY Content marketing tools that you love? What were
your results? Share them with us!

10 Storytelling Festivals You Must Attend in 2016
(ranking #1 on Google for the keyword “best storytelling festivals”)
(link to article)
(100 Pinterest shares; 31 Facebook shares)
We are storytelling animals. And so, before you ask yourself what can storytelling offer to
your business, think back on what you engage with as a person. Looking at the hundreds of
thousands of years of storytelling history, we can see how storytelling has evolved. And
there have been changes in businesses storytelling as well. What began with small
brochures, television ads to very sophisticated content marketing strategies, we’ve come a
long way. And while storytelling for fun and business is likely to be different, the storytelling
techniques and elements remain the same. Our digital marketing trends for 2016 show us
that this field is going to rise, and consumers want businesses to tell them engaging stories.
Today, I’ll share a list of storytelling festivals you must attend in 2016. Storytelling is a skill,
and I do believe attending workshops and events will help you hone them!

What started in the 70s as a humble gathering of 60 people around a hay wagon to listen to
Appalachian stories has turned into the “leading event of its kind in America” and is now in
its 44th edition. Touted as being one of the Top 100 Events in North America, The National
Storytelling festival brings dozens of local and international speakers and performers to
historic Jonesborough, Tennessee. In previous years the festival has enchanted participants
with a plethora of classic storytelling techniques and sessions, as well as story slams, ghost
stories, “midnight cabarets” and music shows. The event is scheduled for the first full
weekend of October 2016, between the 7th and the 9th.
#2 – Scottish International Storytelling Festival
This 10-day prestigious Festival will take place in Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital. After
delighting thousands of fans in the storytelling festival in 2015, with more than 70 events in
the capital and 20 spread around the country, they are back. In 2016, this iconic festival’s
theme will be The Right to Dream and it will focus on stories from the Hispanic world. There

exhibitions, workshops, lectures, and several professional development events. The festival
will take place between the 21st and the 30th of October 2016.
#3 – Timpanogos Storytelling Festival
It is only a 3-day Festival but that doesn’t stop the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival from
being the largest event of its kind throughout the west coast. This festival started in the
founder’s backyard, but has seen tremendous growth and is considered by many story
lovers as “the finest of its kind”. Apart from classic storytelling techniques and sessions, the
public will also be able to participate in pottery workshops, listen to live music events and
watch puppet shows that will surely entertain all family members. The festivities take place in
Timpanogos, Orem (Utah), from August 31 to September 3.
#4 – Cape Clear International Storytelling Festival
This unique festival takes place in one of Ireland’s islands, Cape Clear. It spreads across six
different venues throughout the island, giving participants a wonderful excuse to hit the road
and enjoy the natural scenery while switching between performances. Apart from storytelling
shows, this festival, now in its 21st edition, has a tradition of presenting its visitors with
concerts, workshops for adults and children, story swaps, historical walks, Irish dancing
shows and even a storytelling boat trip. The event will be held between September 2 and 4.
#5 – Alden Biesen International Storytelling Festival
Considered the largest storytelling festival in Europe, the Alden Biesen Festival is a
multilingual storytelling gathering that takes place in Belgium and is very targeted to young
and adult students. Every year visitors from around the world gather to participate in several
multilingual storytelling sessions in 8 different languages, but also in language classes, story
walks, street theatre and musical performances. From April 18 to 26.
#6 – Three Rivers Storytelling Festival
This particular festival happens in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and compensates its small size
with the broad activities that it offers: besides storytelling sessions, this year’s edition
featured a liar’s contest, storytelling workshops, masterclasses, ghost stories, story swaps,
book signing sessions, musical performances and activities for children. Next year’s edition
will take place on August 5th and 6th.
#7 – Festival at the Edge (F.A.T.E.)
F.A.T.E. is a family-friendly festival that will be held from July 15 to 17 next year, surrounded
by England’s beautiful countryside, right outside of the historic town of Much Wenlock. Apart
from hearing stories from performers from around the world, gathering around browsing
through bonfires and craft fairs, visitors will be allowed to take part in several free workshops
throughout the weekend. On-site camping will also be made available to the public.
#8 – Beyond the Border
Wales International Festival is one of the most well-known in the international storytelling
scene and will be taking place between July 1st and 3rd next year in St. Donats medieval
castle. The Times magazine has said this was “A Festival like no other” and we can easily
understand why: apart from classic storytelling sessions, there will also be music, poetry,
theatre and circus performances, as well as workshops, movie screenings and puppet
shows.
#9 – Pike Piddlers Storytelling Festival
This small festival takes place in Brundidge, Alabama, from January 29 to 30. It takes off
with a supper for all participants, and then the stories begin, with three storytelling concerts
that will surely entertain the crowds. The festival usually brings the top storytellers of the
country and before each storytelling session participants are greeted with musical
performances that range from country music, to bluegrass and southern gospel.
#10 – Bay Area Storytelling Festival
Beginning on April 29 and ending on the 1st of May, San Francisco’s festival will offer plenty
of opportunities for visitors to indulge in various storytelling sessions, delivered by
outstanding performers from the US and around the world, as well as numerous workshops,
story swaps and concerts. Participants can also update their storytelling collections by
browsing through books, audio recordings and several storytelling-related items within the
festival’s store.
So, which storytelling events are you attending in 2016? I’m excited and finding it really hard
to choose!

How to Take Care of Your Ukulele
(ranking #10 on Google for the keyword “How to take care of your ukulele”)
(link to article)
The Ukulele sure is a beginner-friendly musical instrument, but you better make sure that
you keep your Uke clean and in good condition, otherwise its sound quality might decline
(not to mention its appearance). Here are a few pointers:
– Solid wood ukuleles are more sensitive than the laminated ones, so bear that in mind
when thinking about how to implement a cleaning routine for your Uke.
– Check humidity levels in your home: too much humidity will cause the wood to swell and
the neck to bend; too little can make your Uke crack… either way, you’d be left with a bad
sounding Uke! Use dehumidifiers and humidifiers if necessary.
– Be careful with hot temperatures! Never leave your Uke inside your car, or near heaters.
– If you usually leave your Uke hanging on the wall, make sure you clean the dust every now
and then, otherwise, it will set in your Uke’s body and it will hurt the sound.
– The general rule is to keep it simple and avoid using synthetic products (such as polishers)
that contain chemicals, as these can damage your uke in the long-term; if you’re doing a
good job cleaning your instrument as part of a regular maintenance routine, you won’t really
see the need to use any special products.
– Use a damp, lint-free cloth to clean the body of your uke, and then remove any left-over
water residue with a dry cloth.
– The fretboard is a very sensitive part of your Uke so try to avoid doing any serious cleaning
on there; you can use cotton swabs to clean around the frets if you see any grime build up
on there.
– It’s also a good idea to wipe your strings gently with a cloth, ideally after each playing
session.
– When you put your Ukulele inside a case, make sure it is well closed, otherwise, it may
accidentally drop to the floor when you pick it up.
– Try to always clean your hands before playing it, as the oils and grease from your fingers
will stick to the instrument and hurt your intonation as well.
Remember to give your Uke some love and it will last a long time!

Three Fun and Useful Running Apps
(ranking #6 on Google for the keyword “Useful running apps”)
(link to article)
(5 Facebook shares)
Nowadays there's a whole World of technology inside our phones that can motivate us to get
through a tough race and help us reach our running goals. Here are 3 fun and useful iPhone
running apps:
Zombies Run is a fun app that offers an immersive running experience to those runners that
could use a little push to finish their races! You'll be taken through a Zombie attack survival
mission, in which you'll need to gather supplies and save people, while running for your life!
Realistic sound effects and voice actors turn this app into a very credible fantasy, and you'll
have the fun of your life running away from a bunch of zombies!
Runkeeper is THE app that many professional runners use for tracking their pacing, steps
and distance. It's a fully-packed app - among many other features, it helps you find new
running buddies and share your progress with them, it connects with other popular apps (like
Fitbit, Pebble and Apple Watch), you can play your favourite iTunes or Spotify tracks with it
(the app even matches the rhythm of the songs with your runs, so no need to skip between
tracks!), it creates custom training plans and you can even set it to remind you to buy a new
pair of running shoes when you reach your desired mileage!
Charity Miles is a great app for the runners that want to make a difference! It uses your
phone’s GPS and motion sensors to detect your movements and measure the distances you
reach, either by running, walking or cycling. It then gives you money as a reward for working
out, and you can offer it to any of the 37 charity organizations that are associated with the
app. You can also join or create Teams, which helps you build a community to help you earn
even more money for the charities that you care about. What a fantastic motivation to get off
the couch, isn't it?
So, tell us, have you tried any of these? What are the running apps that you're currently
using and why?

How Can a Blog Make Money and
How Much Can I Earn?
(link to article)
(1 Pinterest share; 1 Facebook share)
It’s 2016. All your friends are either sharing professional looking images or deciding to be
professional bloggers. Ever wondered- can a blog make money? Read on, we have the
answers!
If you’ve read our first post in our Blogging series about what is a blog and why you need
one, you’re aware of how important blogs are for increasing traffic to your website and for
gaining your potential customers’ trust. Today we’ll be talking about the different ways in
which a blog can make money and how much can you potentially earn. Similarly to the
previous post, I’ve found interesting insights from other bloggers on Quora, which I’ll share
with you now.
So… what can you do to make money from your blog?
Here’s John Ramey’s answer:
“It depends (on) how much work you want to put in, how/what niche your website is, and
what your traffic is like.”
Which are your options, then? Well, you can use your blog to sell:
– Courses, Tutorials, Workshops and Mentoring Programs;
– Services;
– Tickets to Online and Offline Events, such as Conferences and Concerts;
– Your Own Products (such as books, ebooks, t-shirts and other merchandising, Powerpoint
templates, WordPress themes, resources for graphic designers, background music, Quote
posters, Handmade products, Software, etc.);
– Other People’s Products (you become an affiliate for a company and this way you earn a
commission each time someone buys something from them that you mentioned on your
blog);
– Advertising space (you can allow companies to place a banner ad or link on your blog);
– Memberships to an online club or forum that you create and in which you periodically
share valuable content and resources to your members, and where they can interact with
other members of the community.
You can also earn money from your blogging efforts indirectly, as when people land on your
blog they can see your skills and may decide to ask you to do freelance work for them, offer
you speaking gigs, strategic partnerships, sponsorship and book deals, and even a job!
Now, you might be wondering… how much can you actually earn with your shiny new blog?
Well, quoting John Fawkes’ answer on Quora, you can make:
“Anywhere from nothing to millions (…) it depends on the size and quality of the (blog’s)
audience, and how the blog is monetized.”
I wanted to show you something that could inspire you, so I thought you might want to know
that some the top blogs in the digital marketing blogosphere have made more than a
hundred thousand of dollars per month. Blogs such as Entrepreneur On Fire, Smart Passive
Income and Boost Blog Traffic. Let’s repeat that – $100.000 per month. Sure, the chances of
you making this kind of money are slim, but, hey, who knows? Sure, it ain’t going to be easy,
but nothing in life that is worth having is easy, either.
For a different view of the blogging scene, check this 2015 Blogging report from iBlog
magazine; they surveyed thousands of female bloggers and concluded that, as a result of
their blogging efforts:
– 68% of those bloggers earned less than $5,000 annually, or $417/month;
– 57% of them earned less than $2,500;
– 7% of bloggers earned between $5000 and 10,000 annually;
– 6% earned more than 60,000 annually.
So, the sad truth is that the majority of female bloggers that were featured in this study
doesn’t make a decent income out of blogging. But here’s an interesting finding from the
survey:
“The overwhelming majority of bloggers surveyed spend zero to a maximum of 3 hours per
month learning how to use the tools available to grow their businesses.”
This impressive stat can’t be underestimated. These bloggers aren’t investing enough time
in learning how to use social media tools, social media advertising, video, email marketing,
affiliate marketing, and podcasts to take their blogs to the next level. The good news about
this data? Well, you aren’t part of the majority :). You are now reading this blog post, and so
you are one of the few that have the better chances of making blogging work for you!
I hope that by now you’re more aware of the methods available for you to earn money from
your blog and how much you can expect to earn. Don’t forget, though, that how far your blog
will come will depend on how much work you’re willing to put on to make it a success!
The next post in this blogging series will focus on the types of platforms that you can use to
create your blog and what your first steps should be.
