Keep Your Blood Pressure In
Check With Beets
Did you know that hair dye used by Victorians in the 16th century helps you
maintain your blood pressure in check?
It is also a kind of juice drink by an athlete so that they can work out longer.
So what is this juice used as a dye that keeps your blood pressure in the normal
range?
It’s none other than Beets.
Beets are also known as beetroot, table beet, red bit, sugar beet, dinner beet or
golden beet. It is healthy and tasty root vegetables rich in vitamins and
minerals. It is also loaded with antioxidants and phytochemicals.
In a study from Kansas State University published in the Journal of Nitric Oxide,
Biology and Chemistry it was found that aside from improving athletic
performance, beetroot may help maintain healthy and oxygen flow in your body
so that you can keep your lungs, muscles and heart to function efficiently and
properly.
How Does It Work?
Eating fruits and vegetables rich in inorganic nitrate helps relaxes blood vessels
and improves blood flow.
Beetroot contains high levels of dietary nitrate which your body converts into
active nitrite and nitric oxide.
When we eat beets, the intestine digests the nitrate from beets and then
secreted into saliva where various mouth bacteria convert nitrate to nitrite.
Nitrite is then converted into nitric oxide throughout the body’s tissues by a wide
variety of compounds.
Nitric oxide is a molecule that is naturally produced by our bodies. It relaxes the
inner muscles of the blood vessels. Thus, causing them to widen and increase
circulation.
Nitric Oxide production is important for overall health because it helps cells
communicate with each other by transmitting signals throughout the body. It
allows blood, oxygen, and nutrients to travel to every part of your body
efficiently and effectively.
In a meta-analysis of 16 trials published in the Journal of Nutrition, researchers
found that "inorganic nitrate and beetroot juice supplementation was associated
with a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure.
They found that having a daily glass of beetroot juice is sufficient to keep your
blood pressure at a normal range.
Prof Amrita Ahluwalia of the Queen Mary University of London and her colleagues
gathered a group of 64 people between 18 and 85 years.
Participants are divided into two groups. They are randomly assigned to one of
two groups. One group consumed a 250 ml glass of beetroot juice. The other
group consumed 250 ml glass of nitrate-free beetroot juice or the placebo
group.
As a result, participants in the active supplement keep the blood pressure of
many participants into a normal range. Also, participants in this group
experienced a whopping 20 percent improvement in blood vessel dilation
capacity. And their artery stiffness reduced by around ten percent.
So What Does This Mean To You?
It only means that drinking beet juice can help you maintain a healthy heart and
cardiovascular system. It also helps to keep your blood pressure in the healthy
range so you can...

Can Beet Really Improve Your
Athletic Performance
When it comes to making better athletic performance, eating the right food full
of nutrients is the key. But, did you know that there is a superfood used as part
of a beauty regimen that can help you improve your athletic performance?
We are talking about none other than beets.
Beet is a taproot vegetable that belongs to Beta vulgaris species. Vegetables on
this species are grown mostly as edible root veggies high in nutrition and
carbohydrates.
Romans are the first ones who cultivate beetroots. In the 19th century, beetroot
was used to give maroonish hue in red wine. It was then used for various
cooking purposes and is used as a food source. Beets popularity continues to
grow and beetroot juice becomes one of the most popular ergogenic
supplements for athletes.
What Makes Beet An Athletic Nutritional
Powerhouse?
Beets contain amazing nutrients. It was a rich source of potent antioxidants and
high in nitrate levels. Nitrate from foods is converted into nitric oxide when
consumed.
Nitric oxide helps in the widening of blood vessels. Having wider blood vessels
help increase the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to working muscles. Hence, it
enhances your exercise performance.
In a study conducted by Andrew Jones of the University of Exeter in England,
eight men in recreational sports were given an equivalent amount of nitrate in
natural food source in the form of beet juice and the other group with
blackcurrant drink that has a negligible amount of nitrate.
At the end of the test, nitrate concentration in the group who drank natural
source beet juice almost doubled. The amount of oxygen consumes when they
exercise in a stationary bicycle was reduced by 19%. And when they asked to
exercise in exhaustion, they were able to go longer.
In a 2011 study, researchers found that men who drank beet juice improve their
performance by 2.8 percent in both the 2.5 miles and 10 miles cycling
endurance test compared to those who drink nitrate-depleted beet juice.
In another study from 2015 for kayakers, researchers found that compared with
the placebo group, those rowers who drank beet juice improved their
performance by 1.7 percent.
After such experiments, it was concluded the nitrate supplementation stimulates
body function affecting oxygen utilization. It improves lung function and
strengthens muscle contraction and improves performance in endurance.
They find it effective when taken two to three hours before exercise. In general,
having 300-500 mg of inorganic nitrate is enough to provide you with a 1-3%
improvement in performance. Enough percentage to give you a competitive
edge.
Not Just For Athletes
From the research and studies with athletes, scientists now are looking at its
effect on other populations, too.
In a 2015 study, they found that giving beet juice to non-athletes inactive
people increases the nitric oxide levels in their breath as much as 50 percent and
up their knee power by 11 percent.
This, potentially help those people improve their quality of life by enabling them
to perform their day to day activities easily.
So what does this mean to you?
Regardless if you are an athlete or not, taking beet concentrate can help boost
your nitric levels making you feel stronger and more energized.
Therefore, adding this to your diet can help you achieve a competitive edge in
your performance.
How To Keep Your Kidneys
Healthy And Functioning Normally
Have you heard of this superfood vegetable that can help you recover from
exhaustion and toxins after a night of partying and hangover?
This superfood is commonly used to boost athletic performance but recent
studies show it can also help keep your kidneys healthy.
It’s probably in your kitchen right now. I’m referring to beets.
Beets are full of nutritional benefits. It helps the body in a lot of so many healthy
ways including keeping your body safe from toxicity caused by alcohol
consumption.
Moreover, beets also help to keep your kidneys healthy and function normally.
Beets Take Care Of Your Kidneys
As we all know, kidneys are two important organs that help remove waste from
our bodies. It regulates the body fluid and helps cleanse the blood before
sending it back to the heart.
Due to vital functions, your kidneys perform, and the toxins and waste they
encounter, your kidney is prone to various problems. This is why you should not
overlook your kidneys and protect yourself from devastating effects on your
health should your kidney did not perform properly.
You can do it by eating a healthy diet filled with fruits, vegetables, and healthy
protein like beets.
Why Beets Are Good For Your Kidney?
Beets are one of the best vegetables that support your body’s natural detox
mechanism. Betalain, the pigment that gives beets its unique color, works with
your body’s natural defense mechanism to help expel toxins from the body.
By consuming beet juice regularly, you can increase the enzymes in your liver
that are responsible for detoxification. And being a potassium-rich drink, it’s
good for ensuring your blood pressure in check for kidney health.
Beet juice is also rich in potassium, vitamin C, and antioxidants.
The
antioxidants aid protection against harmful radicals and inflammation for the
liver. That’s why beet juice is a good choice for kidney health.
In a study from the Heart Research in the UK, beetroot was shown to protect the
kidney from the effect of dyes used for coronary angiography. The dye reduces
nitric oxide levels and harms the kidney. Dietary nitrate found in abundance in
beets can increase nitrate oxide levels in the body.
Professor Amrita Ahluwalia, Co-Director and Professor of Vascular Pharmacology
at Queen Mary’s William Harvey Research Institute, also agree that taking beets
can boost your lost nitric oxide in the kidneys. And this means shorter hospital
stays and lesser healthcare costs.
This study has the potential to help kidney to function normally and healthy for a
longer period.
Your kidneys are important to your overall health. By keeping your kidneys
healthy, your body functions properly. Taking care of your kidneys should be
your top health priority.
